  • This research investigates the potential for raising awareness of cinematographic and pedagogical strategies present in two audiovisual works that address illegal mining in the Amazon: the animated short film Amazônia sem garimpo and the series Aruanas (season 1). The research aims to understand how aesthetic, narrative and communicational resources contribute to the sensory, cognitive and emotional mobilization of the public, favoring processes of Critical Environmental Education. The analysis considers aspects of the cinematographic language used in the works, in addition to pedagogical aspects based on the content presented, seeking to identify the intended effects of such choices and their potential for transmitting socio-environmental messages. In a first analysis, the works fulfill the role of communicating and democratizing information about the complexity of the illegal gold chain in the Amazon and its socio-environmental impacts, and favor raising public awareness of this issue. Both works work on interdisciplinarity, dialoguing with both the natural and health sciences, as well as the social sciences, bringing to light reflections of a sociological, anthropological, philosophical and spiritual nature. The critical perspective was considered in the conception of both works, each with its own depth, and allows the contents to be capable of generating reflections of an ethical and political nature.

  • This dissertation analyzes, through a qualitative approach and Mayring’s Structural Qualitative Content Analysis, how social participation is recognized, disputed, or denied in territorial, environmental, and tourism management processes affecting the Remaining Community of the Quilombo of Ilha da Marambaia (RJ). Located in a territory marked by overlapping power structures—militarization, centralized environmental policies, expansion of tourism, and industrial pressures in Sepetiba Bay—the community experiences institutionally produced vulnerabilities that limit its territorial rights, political autonomy, and the continuity of its traditional ways of life. The documentary corpus, composed of Navy regulations, environmental reports, tourism materials, Federal Prosecutor’s Office documents, community records, and publications from civil society organizations, enabled the identification of four central dimensions: vulnerability, territoriality, (re)existence, and social participation. The results show that military and environmental norms restrict circulation, fishing, and community use of the territory, reinforcing power asymmetries and constituting cases of environmental racism. Territoriality emerges as a field of dispute among exogenous projects—national security, conservation, and tourism—and the quilombola project of permanence, memory, and ancestry. In contrast, practices of (re)existence arise through rituals, political networks, community-based knowledge production, and proposals for Community-Based Tourism, which reaffirm quilombola protagonism and the community’s historical relationship with the island. Social participation, although formally provided for in institutional instruments, predominantly manifests as consultative or tutelary participation, insufficient to ensure socio-environmental justice. The dissertation concludes that strengthening deliberative participation, recognizing traditional knowledge, and establishing mechanisms for territorial co-management are essential conditions for promoting socio-environmental justice, quilombola autonomy, and democratic sustainability on Ilha da Marambaia.

  • The growing demand for sustainable and inclusive food systems has placed agroecology at the core of debates on territorial development and food security in Brazil. In this scenario, municipalities play a strategic role in designing public policies that promote food sovereignty and strengthen short supply chains. This study examined the integration of agroecology into local food and nutrition security (FNS) policies in Maricá, Brazil, aiming to propose guidelines for establishing an agroecology-based food bank. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining a structured questionnaire, a semi-structured interview with a public management representative, and a technical visit to a nationally recognized food bank, ensuring methodological triangulation.

  • The sustainability agenda has driven corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices, often guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study analyzes how these practices can contribute to sustainable development in beneficiary communities, based on the case study of the project Quipá: Jovens Cultivando Saberes, implemented in quilombola territories in the municipality of São João do Piauí, in Brazil’s semi-arid Northeast region. The research adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, using a case study strategy supported by document analysis and participant obsesrvation. For contextualization, an assessment of private social investment (PSI) in Brazil was conducted, based on data from BISC (Corporate Social Investment Benchmarking) and the GIFE Census. The results indicate that PSI is concentrated among a relatively small number of large companies, with a significant share of resources originating from tax incentive mechanisms, and with education receiving the largest portion of investments. An analysis of social projects promoted by companies in the renewable energy sector in the state of Piauí shows that the expansion of this sector has been accompanied by PSI initiatives, mainly focused on education and income generation, although there is no clear evidence that these investments are directed toward communities located in the vicinity of the projects. Regarding the case study, the findings suggest that the Quipá project contributed to advances across social, economic, cultural, and environmental dimensions. From a socio-ecological systems perspective the project strengthened attributes associated with socio-ecological resilience, such as productive diversity, cooperation networks, traditional knowledge, innovation, social capital, and participatory governance. However, the long term sustainability of these results remains uncertain. It is concluded that CSR practices, even when implemented through isolated and punctual initiatives, can contribute to promoting sustainable development in local territories.

  • The linear paradigm of development based on extraction, transformation and disposal, focused solely on economic value, has brought us to the environment we have today: disorderly consumption, degraded or polluted natural environments by waste, social inequality, climate events intensified by the acceleration of global warming, in short, a series of occurrences that affect the quality of life of today's society and put at risk the supply of the needs of future populations, highlighting the emergence of a paradigm shift towards ecological ethics. In this context, this qualitative research work addresses the insertion of the circular economy in Public Administration, in response to socio-environmental pressure and regulatory instruments on this topic, highlighting its potential to influence private sector organizations, since public institutions are also consumers in this sector. It will explore the interaction between the circular economy and the area of knowledge of architecture and urban planning regarding the design of the forma arquitetônica, materiais e tecnologias digitais da fase de projeto, de forma a identificar

  • The purpose of this work is to understand how the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices of companies to obtain and maintain the Social License to Operate (SLO) are carried out considering the challenges posed by illegal groups, police operations, and the absence of the State in the city of Rio de Janeiro, especially in peripheral areas and communities. To this end, this study proposes the analysis of actions and experiences that occur in this complex social, political, and economic context. The central objective of this study is to answer the fundamental question of how public service concession companies located in the West Zone of the City of Rio de Janeiro manage to obtain and maintain the SLO in communities affected by urban violence. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews and data collection and analysis tools to clearly, objectively, and organizedly show how the companies are obtaining and maintaining the SLO. The relevance of this study lies in the growing importance of LSO (Local Social Responsibility) in corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) agendas, where companies make public commitments to contribute to sustainable development. However, in areas affected by urban violence, the dynamics imposed by illegal groups and the absence of the state introduce unique challenges that this study aims to highlight, as we adopt the hypothesis that violence is a restrictive factor to the development and maintenance of these actions. This is the distinguishing feature of this study. The expected outcomes include the identification and description of companies' actions, focusing on the possible effects caused by the impacts of urban violence on ESG practices and the indication of potential innovative practices, delivering a technical report as the final product.

  • Food insecurity and the fragilities of the food system demand complex solutions, such as the National School Feeding Program, which combines the fight against hunger with local sustainable development. This research analyzes the possibility of contributing to Food Sovereignty, Security and Nutrition with the inclusion of green jackfruit in the school menu of Nova Iguaçu/RJ. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, under opinion number 7.640.384. Data collection took place in September 2025, in a municipal school, through the application of questionnaires to students and their guardians. The instruments aim to outline the socioeconomic profile and eating habits of students in the school and family context. The sample included 53 guardians, mostly women (84.9%), black, and without a stable marital relationship (73.3%). Despite 69.8% having an income below the minimum wage and 77.4% being beneficiaries of social programs, the majority (66%) declared financial security for the purchase of food. Regarding the 49 students, 63.3% consumed school meals, but there is strong resistance to the consumption of vegetables and a preference for traditional stroganoff. The habit of 77.6% of students bringing snacks from home, based on cookies and sugary drinks, highlights the high consumption of ultra-processed foods and the urgency of food and nutrition education interventions. The students participated in an acceptability test of preparations with green jackfruit, using the sensory analysis method (5-point mixed facial hedonic scale) and food waste analysis. The first phase tested green jackfruit stroganoff and obtained 65% acceptance and 69.2% food waste. In November 2025, following the guidelines of the National School Feeding Program, green jackfruit bolognese sauce was tested with 36 students (92.3% participation). The results (66.6% in sensory analysis and 59.6% in food waste) remained below the expected parameters of 85% and 90%, respectively. These figures confirm the resistance to the new taste and reinforce the need for food and nutrition education strategies to make the introduction of the food feasible. Consultations with the Transparency Portals of the National Fund for the Development of Education and the Municipality of Nova Iguaçu confirm the regularity of the transfers (2020 to 2024) and the compliance in purchases from family farming. The Multi-Year Plan (2026 to 2029) allocates a budget for school meals, while field research, conducted in January 2026, with family farmers in the Southeast region indicates that 66.7% are located in the state of Rio de Janeiro and 75% participate in public procurement, with the majority showing interest in selling green jackfruit. It is suggested that green jackfruit be included in the school menu of Nova Iguaçu/RJ through public calls for proposals, combining healthy eating with income generation for local family farming. To make this proposal viable, an informative e-book was developed for Education Secretariats, structured as technical material for the introduction of sustainable foods in the school environment. This measure promotes Food Sovereignty, Security and Nutrition, in addition to strengthening family farming and supporting sustainability and climate mitigation policies.

  • This dissertation project aims to investigate the potential of ecological landscaping as a strategy for applying Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to the urban context of Rio de Janeiro. The research stems from the recognition that contemporary cities face complex challenges related to climate change, environmental degradation, and a scarcity of qualified green areas, requiring interdisciplinary and ecologically integrated approaches in urban planning. In this sense, ecological landscaping presents itself as a mediating instrument between urban infrastructure and natural systems, promoting ecosystem services such as thermal regulation, sustainable drainage, increased biodiversity, and social well-being. The study proposes to analyze the theoretical convergence between ecological landscaping and NBS, explore existing methodologies and projects in Brazil and abroad, and, based on this, contribute directly to SDGs 11, 13, and 15 by proposing design guidelines applicable to the context of Rio de Janeiro and a technical manual of native species for urban ecological landscaping integrated with NBS, strengthening climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and the environmental quality of the city. Finally, this research aims to contribute to the scientific and technical dissemination of sustainable urban design practices, providing support for the development of an environmentally responsible landscape culture.

  • Food systems exert increasing pressure on natural resources, making it necessary to adopt sustainable practices throughout food production, distribution, and consumption. In this context, restaurants play a strategic role in promoting more responsible food systems due to their influence on ingredient procurement, menu planning, waste management, and consumption patterns. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the incorporation of sustainable practices in restaurants affiliated with the Nova Friburgo Gastronomic Hub, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, considering environmental, social, and operational aspects. This applied research adopted a predominantly quantitative and descriptive approach, based on a literature review and the analysis of anonymous, aggregated institutional secondary data, interpreted in light of the scientific literature. The study also resulted in the development of a technical product. The data provided by the Gastronomic Hub were analyzed using sustainability indicators adapted from the Green Restaurants Assessment (GRASS) model. The analysis was structured into three dimensions: water, energy, and gas (Dimension 1); menu planning and food procurement (Dimension 2); and waste, materials, chemical products, employees, and social sustainability (Dimension 3). The results showed that the restaurants demonstrated greater adherence to the practices included in Dimension 2, related to menu planning and food procurement, with an adherence rate of 72.4%. This was followed by Dimension 3, concerning waste management and social responsibility, with 56.5%, and Dimension 1, related to water, energy, and gas, with 55.1%. Furthermore, the analysis of the secondary data and the literature review supported the development of a Sustainable Best Practices Guide for Restaurants. It was concluded that the establishments analyzed adopt relevant sustainable practices, although opportunities remain for improving and expanding these initiatives.

  • The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that comprise the 2030 Agenda were created as an action plan to protect the planet and promote peaceful and inclusive societies. However, knowledge about the SDGs remains limited among a significant portion of the population. Environmental education is one of the means of disseminating and contributing to the achievement of the SDGs; therefore, new teaching and learning methods have been sought to raise awareness among both students and society as a whole. Among these methods, gamification emerges as an approach involving the integration of challenges, competitions, rewards, and immediate feedback. The general objective of this research is to evaluate students’ understanding of SDG-related themes through participation in Ecoeduca, a gamified environmental education project. The specific objectives include analyzing how the proposed gamification contributes to environmental education and practical actions; examining the relationship between the SDGs expected within Ecoeduca project activities and those identified by participants; and analyzing the factors that influence students’ understanding and application of the SDGs. The research adopted a qualitative and descriptive approach through the case study of the Ecoeduca project at UERJ Nova Friburgo. Documentary research using secondary data and Bardin’s content analysis was conducted for data interpretation, with the categorization of justifications (from 0 to 3) based on their level of depth. Ecoeduca participants included students and teachers from lower and upper secondary education in public and private schools in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, organized into nine teams. The results showed that participant groups were able to associate their actions with the SDGs, frequently corresponding to those expected within the proposed activities. The project contributed to enabling students to implement real-world actions and, through them, explore the SDGs in a broader and more practical way. Gamification, through elements such as scoring criteria, feedback, and rankings, promoted progression in most teams regarding their understanding of the listed and justified SDGs, contributing to the advancement of discussions on SDG-related themes among participants. Factors such as the gamified method itself, the selected activities, the complexity of the SDGs, and the scoring criteria proved to be key elements in the process of understanding the Goals. Although some SDGs, such as SDGs 4, 10, and 12, were mentioned more frequently, it was observed that all SDGs were addressed at some level, indicating the potential of the proposed method. The project proved effective as an environmental education strategy, expanding students’ understanding of the SDGs and encouraging them to seek knowledge beyond the classroom, engage with new realities, and contribute to their development as citizens.

  • The manifestations of climate change have become increasingly frequent and severe. Although these events affect society as a whole, the most vulnerable segments of the population remain the most impacted, regardless of the country, particularly traditional peoples and communities, such as Quilombola and Indigenous groups in Brazil. The climate emergency requires the establishment of a new model of environmental governance in which all sectors of society have the opportunity to discuss climate issues and contribute to the development of solutions. In this context, the integration of so-called Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Science is a fundamental tool for addressing historical inequalities and enhancing the effectiveness of climate change mitigation measures, thereby advancing efforts to achieve the goals proposed by the 2030 Agenda. This study proposes the use of a communication guide based on dialogue dynamics to facilitate the integration of different knowledge systems in development projects aimed at implementing integrated agroecological systems. This product is the result of a comprehensive literature review on the relevance of Social Communication, its impact on science communication, and its potential as a tool for knowledge integration and, consequently, for the inclusion of traditional communities in the debate on solutions to the climate crisis, thus increasing the impact of mitigation actions. This proposal was also based on the analysis of the Sustainable Rural Project – Caatinga (PRS Caatinga), an initiative of the British Government in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), which promoted the adoption of Low-Carbon Agricultural Technologies (LCTs) enhanced by Social Technologies for Coexistence with the Semi-Arid Region among smallholder farmers in 31 municipalities across five states in the Brazilian semi-arid region. This integration was made possible through an active social communication strategy involving the 20 beneficiary organizations participating in the project. This experience shaped the structure of the social communication guide, which is divided into two parts: the first presents concepts related to social communication, its development, and its impact on society; the second offers practical exercises to be applied throughout all phases of a project in order to foster a less hierarchical environment and encourage equitable collaboration among all participating groups.

  • Scientific communication in the environmental third sector faces challenges that go beyond
translating scientific knowledge into accessible language, requiring more strategic approaches
to engage the general public, especially on social media. This study analyzed how approaches
and narratives on Instagram influence public engagement and how academics and
environmental professionals perceive the platform’s use for science communication. The results
indicate that dynamic, irreverent, and easily consumable content generates greater interest,
regardless of attributes such as age group and educational level. However, structural and
cultural challenges surrounding science communication in academia and third-sector
institutions—such as the lack of institutional support—hinder its practice by researchers and
environmental professionals. To overcome these barriers, the study proposes the use of the Fogg
Behavior Model as a strategy to foster a culture of science communication within environmental
third-sector institutions. Additionally, the research may support organizations and researchers
in submitting projects for funding calls that require science communication as a counterpart.

  • Environmental forecasts driven by climate change predict a bleak scenario, signaling the failure of traditional urban infrastructures. To achieve a sustainable urban socioecological system, new possibilities for the design and management of urban landscapes have emerged, aiming to mitigate the impacts of climate change. In this context, Ecological Landscaping has become a crucial discipline for sustainability, offering social, economic, and environmental benefits, resilience, and improved quality of life in urban areas. This discipline focuses on restoring the multifunctionality of landscapes across various scales, inspired by nature-based solutions and the implementation of Green Infrastructure, leveraging natural processes and mechanisms as models for environmental technologies.

This study focuses on the development of a landscape design project grounded in the concepts of green infrastructure and ecosystem services, using a favela in Rio de Janeiro as a case study for analysis and investigation. Data collection and diagnosis were conducted through a participatory methodology, involving consultations with 25 urban stakeholders to gather input for proposal development. The goal is to create concrete solutions for public green spaces based on the community’s needs, making these areas safer, more inclusive, sustainable, healthy, and engaging. Additionally, the approach seeks to foster a sense of ownership among direct beneficiaries. The final output of this study will be a landscape strategy proposal rooted in green infrastructure to address the identified needs of the territory.

  • Economic development is the main factor behind the exploitation and degradation of the environment and its resources, resulting in numerous negative impacts on different scales. Copper (Cu) is an element used to fertilize the soil, form metal alloys, produce batteries and transmission lines. However, its incorrect disposal leads to soil and water contamination, impacting human health and the environment. In this sense, it is important to think of alternatives to reduce contamination of soil, subsoil, surface and subsurface water, minimizing the impact on animals and people. The aim of this work was to study solutions for the remediation of soils contaminated by copper (Cu), using the technique of phytoremediation using adapted species. To this end, a bibliographic search was carried out on journal portals and reliable websites, such as institutional and public agency sites, looking for techniques and species used in the phytoremediation of areas contaminated by copper, using the following keywords: copper, phytoremediation; copper phytoremediation; copper phytoremediation and copper contamination. Information was collected on the species used; techniques; procedures; objectives; efficiency data; cost information; response time to procedures; among other parameters that are pertinent to support the conclusions of this research. From the collection and processing of this data, a database was created with relevant information about each species, as well as its potential uses and application methodologies. The research surveyed different species and methods that can be used to recover degraded areas, with great potential in Brazil due to its favorable climatic conditions and great botanical diversity. In this way, the project contributed to meeting the Life Under Water (14) and Life on Land (15) targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, helping to reduce the negative impacts of copper contamination on human health and ecosystems.

  • This dissertation investigates the strategies for integrating the Sustainable Develop- ment Goals (SDGs) into the management and governance policies of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in accordance with the commitments established by the 2030 Agenda. Based on a qualitative approach, the study conducts a thorough documentary analysis of the institution’s normative and strategic instruments, such as the Statute, General Regulations, Institutional Development Plan (PDI), Strategic Institutional Plan (PEI), Sustainable Logistics Plan (PLS), and Annual Management Report, employing the con- tent analysis methodology proposed by Bardin. The objective is to understand how the SDGs have been formally incorporated, which goals and principles are prioritized, and what challenges and advances emerge in the process of institutionalizing sustainability within the university. The findings reveal the presence of guidelines and commitments aligned with the SDGs in various documents, although their integration remains fragmented and with limited practical implementation. The research contributes to the field of sustainable development practices by providing a critical assessment of the alignment between university governance and the 2030 Agenda, while also offering reflections and recommendations that may support public managers and institutional policymakers in consolidating more sustainable, inclusive, and socially engaged universities. The originality of this study lies in its articulation between sustainability and university governance in a Brazilian public institution, a topic still incipient in the national academic literature.

  • The challenges facing ensuring food security are still numerous, which makes it necessary to promote more and more discussions related to the Human Right to Adequate Food (HRAF).In this logic, this research aimed to elucidate the role of a fruit and vegetable processing unit in promoting Food and Nutritional Sovereignty and Security in the municipality of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro. In compliance with the ethical aspects of research, this project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro under opinion No. 6,907,535.The case study was conducted in a quantitative and qualitative manner, thus, in the first stage, a bibliographic research and a survey of statistical data on the products processed by the processing unit from 2022 to 2024 were carried out. The data analysis was carried out using R software to consolidate the results in terms of obtaining frequency distributions to describe the production and distribution profile of the unit under analysis. The first phase of the study showed that the fruit and vegetable processing unit contributes to sovereignty, food and nutritional security through the distribution of dehydrated bananas and minimally processed tubers to children, adolescents, adults and elderly people living in the four districts of the municipality, namely, Sede/Centro, Ponta Negra, Itaipuaçu and Inoã.In this way, 80,053.8 kg of cassava and sweet potatoes were distributed to organizations that offer services and activities for vulnerable people, as well as 6,298 kg of dehydrated bananas for school meals in the municipal education system. This generated an income of R$710,234.6 million distributed among the farmers registered to supply inputs to the processing unit. Therefore, it is expected that actions like this can be replicated in other locations, with a view to reducing fruit and vegetable waste, encouraging agroecology, and promoting food and nutritional security.

  • Environmental education is an increasingly relevant topic in contemporary society, considering the environmental challenges faced globally. The general objective of this work is to create a didactic-pedagogical material, such as an interactive booklet, with games and information, that provides teachers with tools to teach about zoonoses, focusing on the Didactic Transposition (DT) process, according to the theory formulated by Yvis Chevallard (1980). DT emphasizes the transformation of scientific knowledge into knowledge to teach and, subsequently, into knowledge taught, adapting knowledge to the school context through didactic materials and pedagogical practices. In this sense, the project aims to promote knowledge through active educational practices, with the possible effect of preventing zoonoses through the dissemination of information, in addition to fostering sustainable environmental awareness in school communities. In addition to a review of the literature on environmental education, zoonoses and the Didactic Transposition process, the work addresses the main zoonotic diseases, modes of transmission, symptoms and preventive measures. The main methodology includes a bibliographic review, development of educational resources and data collection through research in books, scientific materials, dissertations and theses available in the Scielo database and in some universities. In this way, the expected result is sustainable environmental awareness among students and other stakeholders in the school community, promoting positive impacts on the relationship between the environment, citizenship and society, while highlighting the importance of Didactic Transposition in adapting scientific knowledge to the educational context.

  • Since the mid-20th century, scientists around the world have been warning about the possibility of a viral pandemic that could lead to millions of deaths worldwide and cause economic losses on different scales. Among these viruses were those of the large CoV family, which were first identified in humans in 1937, but were only classified as coronaviruses in 1965, due to their crown-like shape observed under a microscope. In mid-2019, following the contamination of humans with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, possibly due to the consumption of wild animals, the COVID-19 pandemic began, originating in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China. This triggered a health crisis with various consequences, including increased unemployment and the process of "rualização," meaning people living on the streets. Based on the observation of this phenomenon, this study aimed to define the concept of environmental injustice, analyze the impacts of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic on the homeless population in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and characterize the profile of this population. The methodology used was a bibliometric review of the concept of environmental injustice and data collection from the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship to demonstrate that the COVID-19 pandemic increased unemployment and raised the number of homeless people by 38%. This situation is linked to the current economic model in Brazil, which is based on the principles of unequal wealth accumulation and the generation of relative overpopulation. This work seeks to contribute to the development of public policies aimed at minimizing the inequalities imposed by economic conditions, based on an understanding of how the capitalist system favors the emergence of new pandemics and perpetuates social inequalities, even in the face of global crises and extreme adversity.

  • The Atlantic Forest is one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Composed of different types of interconnected forests and natural environments, it is home to an immense variety of fauna and flora species, representing approximately 50% of the species recorded in Brazil. Its biological diversity and the beauty of its landscapes are extremely important for environmental balance and for mitigating climate change. This paper addresses the importance of indigenous peoples in environmental preservation and the challenges faced by these communities in relation to public health, with a focus on Brazilian spotted fever (BSF). Indigenous peoples, recognized as the "Guardians of the Forest", have an ancestral, cultural and vital relationship with forest ecosystems. Their traditional knowledge and sustainable practices are essential for the conservation of biodiversity, ecological balance and coping with climate change. However, these populations often live in vulnerable conditions, with limited access to health services, which aggravates the impact of infectious diseases, such as BSF. Rocky Mountain spotted fever, caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, poses a serious threat to indigenous health and can cause severe complications, especially in more vulnerable individuals. During the study, 50 ticks were collected in six indigenous villages in the municipalities of Paraty and Angra dos Reis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. All specimens were identified as belonging to the species Amblyomma ovale. Molecular analyses revealed amplification of the ITS-2 gene in all specimens, and a 47.46% positivity rate for Rickettsia spp. via the gltA gene. The results demonstrate the significant presence of potentially infected vectors in indigenous areas and highlight the urgency of integrated public health and environmental preservation actions. Thus, protecting indigenous rights and strengthening primary health care in these communities are fundamental measures for both environmental sustainability and the prevention of emerging infectious diseases.

  • The socio-environmental crisis is one of today's biggest challenges. Having an interdisciplinary and collective perspective is essential in the search for changes and solutions to reverse this scenario. From this perspective, we can include Christian faith communities in this context. Since they are institutions that exert a strong influence on our society. In Latin America, Christianity was introduced between the 15th and 16th centuries in a colonial way. However, in the 19th and 20th centuries a crisis in colonization began, giving rise to Christian movements concerned with the poor and oppressed, and Liberation Theology emerging. Ecotheology, which is based on Liberation Theology, is an approach that has strengthened and awakened these communities to the need to get involved in discussions about the socio-environmental crisis. The need to think about a Decolonial Ecotheology is also gaining strength. Environmental Education can be an instrument to assist in the application of Ecotheology and generate a socio-environmental identity in Christian faith communities. Given this, this work will seek to investigate how Christian faith communities relate to socio-environmental issues. To this end, a survey was carried out with religious leaders from Catholic and Baptist faith communities, in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu-RJ. The research was carried out through bibliographical research, questionnaire application and semi-structured interviews. With this, we sought to understand these leaders' understanding of socio-environmental issues and whether churches have actions that contribute to changing the socio-environmental scenario. In this way, we discuss how environmental education can contribute to the construction of a socio-environmental identity in Christian faith communities

  • Global fish consumption per capita reaches around 20.5 kg per year and is likely to increase in the next decade, which is worth highlighting its critical place in global food and nutritional security. Effective fisheries management based on sustainable development was a fundamental contribution to maintaining this trend, according to the new report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The activity of artisanal fishing has a positive impact on the generation of work and income, especially for the low-income population, ensuring food security for these families. The different uses of natural resources lead to an increase in conflicts related to different forms of appropriation. This diversity of uses has directly impacted traditional populations such as caiçaras, fishermen, indigenous people and quilombolas, who have undergone processes of cultural transformation. These transformations are directly related to the coexistence of activities, thus generating conflicts and involving different actors. It is also necessary to emphasize that this scenario that permeates fishing communities and historical-cultural heritage is occurring in disorderly growth, interconnecting and generating new conflicts, in the face of land, tourist, real estate and use interests, thus degrading natural resources. The State of Rio de Janeiro has a Coastal Zone with an approximate maritime extension of 1,160km, covering 33 municipalities and around 40% of the state. The State has favorable natural conditions for the development of marine fishing and has always been at the forefront of this activity. Extractive fishing activity as the main source, fish. This dissertation will cover the territory of the municipality of Itaguaí, located in the Metropolitan Mesorregion of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Despite the municipality having high industrial growth, it still has significant numbers of fishing activity, standing out among the 22 municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro with this activity. Thus, the present study sought to investigate and debate the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 14 “Life in Water” and how its goals relate to fishing activity in the municipality of Itaguaí. Using a qualitative methodology, based on a inductivo method, legislation relevant to fishing activities at the federal, state and municipal levels was identified. This search was carried out with the competent bodies of each sphere, such as environmental bodies, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture – MPA, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Supply – MAPA, among others, searching for publications and articles that address the analyzed topic. The goals of Sustainable Development Goal 14 “Life in Water” and its points correlated with fishing activity and public policies at the municipal level were analyzed.

  • Brazil is known worldwide for its public policy of providing school meals through the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) for guaranteeing the right to food in public schools, contributing to Food and Nutritional Security (FNS) and the Human Right to Adequate Food (HRAF). In order to evaluate the implementation of the PNAE at the Technical College of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (CTUR) and analyze the actions of Food and Nutrition Education (FNE) developed in the subject of Food and Beverages 1 (F&B1), a mixed exploratory and descriptive research was conducted. Data related to the management of PNAE resources were collected from the website of the National Education Development Fund (FNDE). In addition, two self-administered questionnaires were used through Google Forms: one for students and another for guardians to assess the socioeconomic characterization and identify the perceptions of students and their guardians about the lack of School Feeding (SF) at CTUR, as well as the strategies adopted by students to eat at school. The analysis of FNE actions used the technique of participant observation and documentary analysis. Data was collected between July 2022 and June 2023. The research involved the participation of 203 students and 72 guardians. Of the total students, 87% were between 14 and 18 years old. Despite the existence of financial support provided by FNDE to CTUR, the provision of SF is carried out away from the school environment, exacerbating student food and nutritional insecurity. 73% of students stated that receiving free food at school was extremely important, and 70% confirmed that it was difficult to eat at CTUR. As a strategy to eat during the school day, 82.6% brought food from home and 74.9% bought food at the canteen or nearby. Fried snacks and sugary drinks were purchased by 78% and 51% of students, respectively. Although they could eat meals at the University Restaurant of UFFRJ, 51.7% did not choose this option. 93% of guardians considered the lack of SF provision unfair for students, as not all of them could afford to finance meals. The need to subsidize school meals caused financial and emotional burden for families. The subject of F&B1 was part of the 4th module of the Technical Course in Hospitality, and the practical classes and field trips of 4 classes were observed, totaling 60 students. The classes of the subject are used as tools to promote FNE and support FNS for the members of the classes, through actions based on the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population. In 2022 and 2023, a partnership with an International Non-Governmental Organization financed the purchase of diverse foods, strengthening a short circuit and increasing the income of farming families. The results of the study confirm the need to effectively implement the PNAE at CTUR in an equitable manner, considering that the program is an efficient tool for promoting FNS, essential for the school environment and decisive for mitigating social inequalities.

  • Seaweeds have a great ability to produce oxygen, being responsible for
for 54% of world production and the Algal Turf Scrubber (ATS) shows a new
possibility of using them. Studies carried out with the ATS demonstrate its effectiveness and
potential for water purification and the development of many other activities,
including the production of biofuel, fertilizers, among others. The present work
aims to implement a treatment system based on the ATS technique for
nutrient removal, building a system composed of four ramps, adjacent
to Lake Açu, located at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to
to implement the partnership between UFRRJ and the University of Maryland in College Park
(UMD) through scientific and technological exchange through the recovery of bodies
degraded water resources used in UMD research and projects. The ATS consists of
four-way sloped flow (1% slope) with dimensions of 1 m wide per
5m high. A self-priming intake pump of approximately 200-700 watts
that pushes the water from the lake to the beginning of the ramps, where a bucket-type system
dump, accumulates this water and pours it over the ramp creating a water pulse
necessary to stimulate and enhance the growth of annexed algae in the flow path.
Nylon fabric will be placed over the lining of two of the ramps and on the other two
dry fruits of Luffa cylindrica, known as metro bush, were used.
provide a high degree of surface area for filamentous algae to attach to. the part
end of the flow path includes a gutter and PVC pipes that direct water to the lake,
again. The expected result of this project is the successful installation of a
functional ATS model in Lake Açu, for future use in research on removal of
nutrients and other possible investigation modalities in the system.

  • Unleashing various perspectives in different sectors of society, are discussions involving the terms sustainable development, sustainability, and their implications. As rich and complex topics, there is room for debate within and beyond academic circles, seeking applications, implications, and suggestions for solutions to different contemporary issues. In the education field, especially concerning pedagogical practice, there is a clear connection between these themes and environmental education. Furthermore, there is a notable association of these issues with teachers of Science and Biology. In school practice, projects or activities related to environmental education are generally under the guidance of educators in these disciplines. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate, in the work of these educators, the interconnections between Critical Environmental Education and the practices carried out by these professionals. Specifically, Science and Biology teachers in the second segment of elementary school and high school, respectively. Additionally, the project seeks to correlate the formative trajectory of these educators and their pedagogical practice regarding sustainability and Critical Environmental Education. To achieve this objective, the project was carried out in two stages. Firstly, data was collected through an online questionnaire, allowing a broad reach of the target audience and logistical efficiency in obtaining information. Subsequently, through Discursive Textual Analysis, an investigation has been conducted based on the obtained responses. The aim was to obtain a deeper understanding of the motivating questions of this project. From the results of this work, the goal is to contribute to pedagogical practice for Critical Environmental Education through fruitful reflections and appreciation of the construction of this teaching area. The project was carried out by seeking teachers who work in public and private schools located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. However, the contact has been conducted directly with these teachers, without an approach through educational institutions. This strategy aimed to provide more freedom for respondents to answer about the educational institutions where they work without feeling constrained or pressured in any way.

  • Climate change has been one of the main topics in the oil and gas industry in recent years. Exactly for this reason, the industry has been implementing a governance process, with well-defined strategies and guidelines to meet the expectations of its stakeholders. However, the affected communities, a central stakeholder for the industry, are still distant from the discussion processes surrounding the topic.  In Brazil, the Campos Basin has the oldest oil complex and a long process of relationship established with local communities, mediated by the State, through Federal Environmental Licensing. It makes this region a fruitful environment to study the question presented. This research aims to offer subsidies for companies that carry out oil and gas production activities in the Campos Basin, the environmental agency and the affected local communities (artisanal fishing, the main affected public), to include the discussion on climate change (and related themes) in educational actions carried out within the scope of federal environmental licensing or in voluntary actions by companies. In this sense, the research used bibliographical references to contextualize climate change, including its relationship with the oil and gas industry and impacts on artisanal fishing, and the environmental issue and environmental education. As well as, the research sought to understand the view of artisanal fishing participating in the actions of the Campos Basin Environmental Education Program (PEABC) and the environmental analysts from the Brazilian Institute for the Environment of Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), of the Coordination- General Environmental Licensing of Marine and Coastal Enterprises (CGMAC), responsible for coordinating the implementation of environmental education projects from the PEABC, regarding climate change and the correlation with the oil and gas industry in the Campos Basin. To this end, a survey was carried out with these two groups to collect primary data, that enabled to identify the existence of gaps in information from the fishing community regarding the topic, but on the other hand this group is able to identify issues correlated to their daily lives and topics of interest. While IBAMA plans to include the topic in educational activities related to oil royalties. These results supported the construction of a set of recommendations for oil and gas companies, IBAMA and local communities to address the issue.

  • Climate change is an environmental sign of ecosystem imbalances, many of which have their origins in the Green Revolution model of agricultural production. Our situation of planetary emergency invites us to rethink the consequences of human activities, seeking new proposals that respect nature's cycles and its resilience. Agroecology is one of the possible alternatives for achieving sustainability. There are several agroecological models, the most controversial of which is Biodynamic Agriculture, which emerged in 1924 from the ideas of philosopher Rudolf Steiner, based on Anthroposophy or Spiritual Science, about the importance of the relationship between the Cosmos and its effects on plants, animals, soil, diseases and the relationship between farmers and their production units. This dissertation consists of an in-depth study of biodynamic knowledge, considering its origins and main characteristics. In addition to the bibliographical research, and with the hypothesis that Biodynamic Agriculture is a versatile agroecological alternative to be applied in gardening, the general objective of the work is to document the experience of a Biodynamic Agriculture course in the training of young people from the Gardening Training Course with an Emphasis on Agroecology of the Center for Socio-Environmental Responsibility of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, with the aim of promoting the use of these agroecological alternatives to be implemented in their future gardening projects and providing a differentiated professional training. The methodology used will be action research and case studies, sharing the experience of accompanying the participants in the approach to Biodynamic Agriculture techniques and in the search to integrate them into agroecological gardening.

  • Population growth and projections for the future raise questions about how to feed all these people without destroying the planet, minimizing the effects on the environment. The growing demand for animals for food generates degradation of natural resources, destruction of terrestrial ecosystems and contributes to global warming. Due to this new consumption pattern, there is also an increase in diet-related diseases. Due to the importance of this topic, for this dissertation, a bibliographical survey and research using a questionnaire were carried out to analyze the perception and applicability of a plant-based diet, the planetary diet, which, among others, consists of reducing the consumption of foods of animal origin. The research was submitted to the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, protocol 6,527,859. A pre-test was carried out with 63 respondents as a way to improve the research. Data collection for a second questionnaire, revised and updated, was carried out between December 1st and 10th, 2023 using an electronic form, obtaining 413 respondents from all Brazilian regions. Data tabulation was carried out using Google forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and univariate statistics, using the chi-square test when relevant. The significance level adopted was 5% (p≤ 0.05) and the results were processed in the statistical program R, being presented in tables with absolute and relative frequencies, after being treated by descriptive statistics. The main results showed that 36% consumed meat daily in more than one meal but believed that reducing consumption would help preserve forests. Although 35% have never considered reducing meat consumption in their diet, 42% would be willing to do so, however the biggest challenge is finding tasty substitutes. The main reason for reducing meat consumption was related to improving health. The data shows a desire to adopt healthier and more sustainable habits on the part of respondents, but there is a lack of knowledge on how to do this. It is hoped that this dissertation can serve as academic support for future research on the topics studied.

  • Healthy and balanced nutrition is a basic need for human subsistence, as well as a way of
expressing culture and socializing individuals, so full access to it must be guaranteed to all
citizens. In the Brazilian reality, health promotion actions, including those related to nutrition,
are a reflection of efficient public policies. One of these includes assistance to school-age
children through the National School Feeding Program (PNAE). It is a program that mainly
offers school meals and food and nutrition education actions. Although public investments were
negative between 2018 and 2022, according to the National Confederation of Education
Workers, the program continues to be the bridge between family farming and actions aimed at
food security. All food consumed by the rural or urban population was generated by agriculture.
The aim is to encourage the introduction of organic food for school meals in the municipality
of Itaguaí, a healthy and nutritious food to ensure learning on the part of students and to favor
family farming. And also showing how the Municipality works with strategies to encourage the
adhesion of these producers in the municipality to the National School Feeding Program (PNAE).

  • Shared responsibility for the life cycle of products is indispensable for sustainable production
and consumption patterns. Recycling reduces the solid waste crisis but will not eliminate it.
Due to the problems of this issue, this dissertation research aims to characterize the waste
generated in recycling cooperatives in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. To this end, 4
recycling cooperatives that receive waste collected selectively by Comlurb (Companhia
Municipal de Limpeza Urbana), and which receive trucks with routes in all areas of the
municipality, were selected and 2 collections from each of the cooperatives are being carried
out. The analysis for each sample is divided into three phases: general gravimetric
characterization, gravimetric characterization of plastics and business gravimetric
characterization. In this way, the quantitative and qualitative percentage of each component
present in the cooperatives' waste can be assessed, as well as the behavior of the generating
group in response to selective collection services and the National Solid Waste Policy, both
from a population and business point of view. At this point, the evaluation of the first sample,
which totaled 17.05 kg of waste, was completed. Of these, in the general characterization,
40% of the waste is made up of plastics and 28% is considered contaminating material, i.e. it
should not be disposed of in selective collection. The gravimetry of the plastics showed a
predominant percentage of PS resin, a material with low commercial value, as well as
unidentified resins, which lack information on the plastic piece, making it difficult for
cooperatives to correctly identify them and making their classification subject to errors. As for
the gravimetric characterization of companies, 271 companies were identified as contributing
to the generation of waste in the cooperative. Of these, the companies that generated the most
plastics were Colgate Palmolive Industrial LTDA and Café Três Corações S.A., while the
company that generated the most cardboard was Sanremo S.A., Goiasminas Indústria de
Laticinios LTDA generated the most tetrapak and EMS S/A and Eurofarma Laboratórios S.A.
generated the most primary and secondary packaging for medicines, respectively. These
findings highlight the urgent need for more effective waste management strategies and to raise
awareness among the population and large companies in order to promote a more sustainable
and responsible approach to the final disposal of solid urban waste.

  • In the first half of the 20th century, Brazil went through a rapid and profound process of urbanization, leading a significant part of the rural population to migrate to the cities. In the past, it was the majority and responsible for the main economic activity in the country, today the rural population, in addition to being diverse and plural, faces numerous social issues. Poverty in the countryside, in relative terms, affects a greater number of people. Compared to the urbanized poor, the rural poor have fewer opportunities to access rights and public policies capable of being converted into opportunities for income generation, professional training and informal employment, even if precarious. Considering the above, it is possible to question why this poverty is so present in rural territories, since, in theory, access to natural means of subsistence is apparently closer. Therefore, it is necessary to know the reality of the conditions in which families live in rural areas and what are the challenges and obstacles to sustainable development and overcoming the situation of poverty and vulnerability. For the objectives outlined in this project, qualitative field research was carried out with families living in four rural regions of the municipality of Resende-RJ, Capelinha, Bagagem, Terra Livre and Pedra Selada (Vargem Grande).

In this sense, the study aimed to understand the survival strategies of poor families in rural areas so that knowledge of this reality is capable of providing us with elements for the development of community initiatives capable of strengthening the potential for autonomy/sustainability of the communities themselves.

  • We find ourselves in an unprecedented environmental crisis and it is urgent to develop educational actions involving mainly environmental issues, making the population aware of the need to commit to the preservation and defense of the environment.

The evolution of legal requirements in the environmental sector is a reflection of the growing recognition of the importance of sustainability and the need for concrete actions to protect our planet for future generations. This evolution not only sets higher standards for companies and governments, but also drives innovation and the search for more effective and sustainable environmental solutions.

This research project proposes to analyze the evolution of legal requirements in the environmental sector over the last few decades. A transformation that reflects not only growing global awareness of the importance of environmental protection, but also the need for more stringent and transparent policies and regulations to address environmental challenges.

The requirements of the federal environmental agency and its regulations were relatively limited, often focused on generalized aspects, and as the environmental impacts of petroleum activities became more evident and worrying, legal issues were made to expand and deepen. In addition to the aspect of this evolution, another significant point is the growing emphasis on companies' environmental responsibility. Increasingly, companies are required to implement environmental management measures, impact monitoring and transparent reporting on their environmental activities. This not only helps ensure compliance with regulations, but also promotes the adoption of more sustainable practices.

  •  This dissertation arises from the demand of a final subject work, done during the master's course in the area of Sustainability. The author of this work composed a song within the theme of Critical Environmental Education, bringing, in a poetic way, issues related to the defense of the environment and the importance of education for the maintenance of a socially balanced environment. Besides presenting the author's musical work, the dissertation presents the motivation and the stages of its construction, discussing the relevance of music in environmental education projects and activities. From the discussion about this theme, one can highlight the great potential of artistic works, such as songs, poems and other expressions, to be used as communication works in academic-scientific environments, going beyond traditional texts, such as monographs, dissertations and theses, in a perspective of breaking with the Cartesian forms most frequently adopted. It was concluded that music, in fact, can be effective in works of environmental education, also constituting itself as a means of scientific communication.

  • Issues related to nature conservation in Brazil and around the world have been
widely discussed, concomitantly with the increase in protected areas that are designated for
protection as a strategy due to the importance of the ecological characteristics found.
However, the historical context of Brazilian legislation indicates that the most restrictive
delimitation, with the exclusive allocation of these areas to preservation, does not consider
human occupations, and pre-existing communities in these areas. The Serra’s dos Órgãos
National Park, created in 1939, with its delimitation regulated only in 1989, competes since
its creation with the development and consolidation of the territory of the Bonfim Community
in Petrópolis-RJ. The research to be presented focuses on the socio-environmental conflict of
the community and the Conservation Unit with theoretical support from authors who dialogue
with themes that are transversal to the local context, as this is the first case of redelimitation
of a protected area in progress considering the resistance and territory function. Therefore, it
culminates in the proposal of a socio-environmental analysis methodology, conducted
through a socio-environmental diagnosis in the community. The results demonstrate the
importance of a participatory and empowered community acting in the face of conflict and the
need to strengthen public policies capable of subsidizing local sustainable development.

  • The Catholic Church, as an institution with more than 2000 years of existence, has extensive social teaching, with principles that sustain and direct its missionary action in the world. Several models of mission have been developed by the Church over the years, a significant milestone being the Second Vatican Council, which took place in 1965, where the Church reassessed its missionary identity in the contemporary world, moving from a Church that developed the mission with a focus on expansion territorial for a Church “in mission”, that is, of a missionary nature. In this way, the Church realized that it does not exist to carry out a mission, but its existence is part of the greater mission that began with Jesus Christ, to serve others, and preferably the poor. This is the concept of mission that will be used in this work: mission, which refers to the set of principles and the action performed by the Catholic Church and which is understood as the act of “getting out of oneself” and setting oneself on the way towards the other . In 2013, with the election of the first Latin American and Jesuit pope to assume the pontificate, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he chose the name “Francisco”, taking as an example Saint Francis of Assisi, a model of love and charity for the poor, excluded and throughout creation. And, in 2015, Francis published the social encyclical letter Laudato Si', strategically, at COP 21, making an important contribution to the international political discussion on sustainability and the 2030 agenda. The encyclical was written with the contribution of scientists, philosophers , leaders of other religions and lay people, is an invitation to dialogue about “our common home”. The title: Laudado Si”, which means, “Praised be you”, is the canticle of Saint Francis of Assisi, in which the saint praises God for all creation. In this way, the encyclical is a letter of invitation to every human being to rethink his relationship with God, with all creation and with himself, which according to Francis, is the root of the global crisis. In the discussion on sustainability, the encyclical brought a new paradigm: “integral ecology”, which contemplates the social, environmental, cultural and spiritual aspects of the human being. With concrete actions in the search for a change in individual behavior towards community action, it also proposed a participatory dialogue methodology: Laudato Si’ Circles. Within this context, the research sought sustainability guidelines and practices addressed in the encyclical Laudato Si' and its relationship with the mission of the Catholic Church in the contemporary world. Through an in-depth analysis of official Church documents and on the subject in question, it is believed that this work is inserted in the context of this master's degree, since there is a real concern with a practical action for a transformation and change of behavior. In view of the above, the choice of the object of study is justified by the relevance and importance of the Catholic Church in society, as well as its concrete action of political dimension and international level, and by understanding the relevance of studies and dialogues between the religious areas and the academy, thus collaborating for dialogue and a bridge of knowledge. With this, it is expected that the result of this analysis will contribute to the advancement of the understanding of sustainability, and how religion, in this case, the Catholic, contributes and acts in its mission. It was also intended, with the work, to contribute in a practical way with the preparation of a booklet with the methodology of the Laudato Si Circle and a proposal for a training program. Another contribution of a social aspect is to bring a reflection in order to understand themes and concepts for academia and the public in a general and democratic way.

  • This work analyzes the feasibility of implementing alternative technologies for the treatment of sanitary effluents in the Municipality of Itaguaí. The absence of a sewage treatment system in the City is a problem that entails risks to the health of the local population and adequate environmental quality, as wastewater of domestic origin is released in natura into water bodies without prior treatment. Through qualitative and quantitative research based on data from CAPES, INEA and the City Hall of Itaguaí, the quality of city´s water resources and the scenario of bascic sanitation were analyzed. The second stage was based on the bibliographical survey of the Biodigester Septic Tank and the Anaerobic Reactor, as well as the survey of the financial and executive viability for the implementation of these decentralized Technologies in the rural and urban areas of the city. With the improvement of the population's basic needs through sustainable alternatives and the expansion of the coverage of essential services, the circulation of polluting loads and the transmission of diseases decreases, mainly through water source, promoting environmental health and the population's quality of life.

  • The reduction of inequalities is a subject discussed worldwide, becoming the tenth Sustainable Development Goal promoted by the United Nations and permeating several others, such as poverty eradication and gender equality (UN, 2012). In the problem of social inequality, the loss of some is the benefit of others. Simmel (1902) pointed out that the increased speed and heterogeneity of stimuli, which is typical of modern society, can lead to an indifferent position towards the other. The need for human beings to relate to a large number of individuals does not allow the incomparable characteristics of each one to be considered, leading to a distancing in interpersonal relationships. Putting oneself in the other's shoes can change the conceptions of an individual in a deep and permanent way, bringing awareness to aspects previously ignored by an external observer. Part of the empathic process, understanding the context in which the other is inserted, leads to a deeper understanding of the reality experienced by the other. The extrapolation of the process of interpersonal empathy to broader groups of individuals, which leads the individual to become aware of the context experienced by another social group, is called social empathy, and is a process with the potential to lead to genuine understanding in contexts of inequality, culminating in the promotion of social justice. The process of empathy, as a potential for transformation, is not appealing to everyone. It is hypothesized that a simple method, such as a game, may be able to initiate this movement in diverse people, exposing the players to realities they do not know, and start applying the understanding of this new context beyond the game, in their social relations and political decisions. The general objective of this work is to present a method for promoting the process of social empathy, adapted to the Brazilian reality, which combines entertainment, group interaction, and promotes the process of awareness towards others. It is hoped that method can be employed in groups in order to contribute to current efforts to raise awareness about social inequality and the need for sustainable development. Therefore, the intention is to offer this tool in a detailed and complete way for its easy reproduction and to contribute to the construction of this knowledge in the Brazilian academic environment, giving support to future works on the subject.

  • This research aims to analyze the potentialities and challenges of the agenda of public-community partnerships for the promotion of leisure and tourism in protected areas, from a legal-conceptual point of view, having as reference the legislation applicable to partnerships between the public and private spheres in protected areas and the conservation of territories of traditional peoples and communities. The research seeks to analyze the partnerships between the public and private spheres in supporting the management of conservation units, with the aim of substantiating public policies that have application for a wide range of protected areas. The work will allow the development of a legal-conceptual analysis for the study of partnerships between the public and private spheres in protected areas, especially with regard to the different modalities that can be implemented in these areas, with special focus on the agenda of public-community partnerships , still under conceptual and legislative construction, but with relevance given the sociocultural diversity of communities and traditional peoples in the country. This study will detail the legal instruments applicable to partnerships involving the for-profit private sector, organized civil society and protected area management bodies, as well as their potential, challenges and vulnerabilities, identifying recommendations for public policies that strengthen the engagement of partnerships with traditional peoples and communities. Initially, the methodology will be based on bibliographical research, with consultations with authors who have already addressed the theme of partnerships between the State and civil society within the scope of conservation units. Documental research will also be used through constant consultation of legislation on the matter, as well as the critical analysis of technical documents that deal with the relationship between traditional peoples and communities and protected areas. Finally, as the research progresses, a comparative analytical framework will be prepared with the experiences and legal instruments identified and a technical note with the legal-conceptual analysis on the possible ways to strengthen the agenda of public-community partnerships. The research will be directed towards the orientation and elaboration of public policies that help the partnerships signed in places destined to the sociocultural and environmental conservation, especially promoting the democratic perspective and the consequent proximity of the population with the public administration. In this way, conservation units will be closer to meeting the primary purpose of socio-environmental sustainability.

  • The Covid-19 pandemic, which was declared in March 2020, lasted until May 2023 and directly affected the Brazilian population's access to adequate food, a characteristic of Food and Nutrition Security, which is defined in Brazil through the Organic Law on Food and Nutrition Security. The accentuation of social inequality, as well as that of race and gender, has dictated the form of social isolation, the solution found by the government and the WHO to combat Covid-19, for Brazilians. In 2021 in Brazil, when this research took place, millions of people were severely food insecure. This descriptive, qualitative and quantitative study looked at the food consumption profile of Brazilians during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is part of the research entitled "COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil: Impacts on Food, Health and the Environment", approved in April 2021 by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro - UNIRIO, under protocol 4.669.302. Participants were asked to fill in an electronic form with questions related to the type of food they ate, how often they ate and how much they ate of certain foods. It was found that although Brazilians ate out more during the pandemic (31.9%), they maintained their eating habits during this period and bought foods that prioritized shelf life. Individuals ate comfort foods (22.53%) and delivery foods (71.9%). The change in the participants' diet, with an emphasis on the consumption of comfort foods, delivery food and the consumption of meat by the majority of the individuals, showed an unsustainable dietary practice, at a time when Brazil and the world were going through an emergency situation, going against the proposal of the UN's SDG 2 in Brazil. Women made up the majority of flexitarians/vegetarians (23.6%) and strict vegetarians (12.7%). The majority of individuals prioritized the daily consumption of fruit and vegetables (20% consumed fruit and vegetables three times a day), as recommended by the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population. It is hoped that this research can serve as a bibliography for future studies on the food consumption profile of Brazilians during the Covid-19 pandemic and that the product generated will serve as a means of communicating with the population and consequently sharing knowledge.

  • The Atlantic Forest is one of the most important biomes in the world, consisting of various forest formations and associated ecosystems, it is home to a great diversity of plant and animal species, representing half of the total number of species cataloged in Brazil. Its biodiversity and richness of natural landscapes attract tourists from all over the world, encouraging the development of ecotourism in the region. Located along the Brazilian coast, the Forest has suffered for centuries from the intense exploitation of its natural resources and the demographic advance on its borders, anthropic actions that contribute to changes in the relationships of parasitism and the emergence of diseases. In non-anthropic environments, the attribution of parasites in relation to their hosts is the result of coevolution between species. With the fragmentation of ecosystems by human action, different species are affected by the scarcity of resources and greater availability of others. From the collection of ticks on small mammals captured near stretches of recreational trails, this project proposes to assess the risks of exposing tourists to these parasites. Studies with ectoparasites as bioindicators are scarce in the Atlantic Forest, comparing the different data obtained in the Conservation Units (UCs) analyzed, will be able to demonstrate the degree of conservation of each UC, as well as the variety and quantity of ticks collected, the diversity of captured mammals and also the variability of possible zoonotic agents.

  •  Access to quality food, despite being a human right, guaranteed by the Brazilian constitution, presents itself as a challenge that is increasingly far from being overcome in the country. This research aimed to elucidate the contributions to the promotion of food and nutritional sovereignty and security in dialogue with Agroecology as a tool for maintaining sustainable food systems. Based on the case study of the project entitled “Maintenance and Expansion of Agroecological production units in the municipality of Maricá”, analyzed from 2020 to 2022. This research was based on two central axes: 1. Agroecological food production; 2.Construction of Agroecological knowledge and Dialogue with Society. This project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee at UFRRJ (COMEP/UFRRJ) under protocols nº 797/2016. As a methodology for collecting qualitative and quantitative data, we used a survey of internal documents and reports, and questionnaires aimed at the public of each axis. The information and data collected by this research supported the project's contribution to the Sovereignty, Food and Nutritional Security (SSAN) of the citizens served through the production and distribution of agroecological foods and the promotion of training and dialogue spaces on agroecology. It was found that 13,795.51 kg of agroecological food were distributed to 439 people, 163 of whom were served through meals, and 279 through green baskets, reaching up to 1,104 through 11 institutions of social interest in the municipality, such as nursing homes. elderly people, philanthropic daycare centers, associations, among others. The profile of the beneficiaries was characterized by female gender (70%) of varying ages, and incomplete primary education (60%). And it showed the offer of four formats of training and dialogue spaces about agroecology: training in an online format, where 752 people were served in 14 training spaces; face-to-face exchanges, where at least 178 people were served in 8 exchanges; 28 visits to the units, in which 178 people were received. In addition to the profile of these participants, who presented themselves as mostly young women aged 18 to 29 (33%), with incomplete higher education (47%) and income of up to one minimum wage (47%). It is expected that the data collected by this research will encourage the creation of public initiatives to strengthen local agroecology as an action to promote Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security.

distinct moments: (1) the history of the event and the current status of the case; (2) the context
before the event; and (3) the context after the event. To this end, a qualitative methodological
approach was used, including exploratory bibliographic and documentary research and victims'
speeches extracted from the official document: ATA of Public Hearing in Barra Longa (PR-MG-
00000261/2020). In more detail, the event was analyzed through the lens of the sociology of
disasters, drawing parallels with the concepts of progressive neo-extractivism, environmental
racism, and identity. Likewise, after listing the most commonly used nomenclatures to reference
the event, a semantic debate is presented, pointing to the term “forced internal displacement” as
the only possible nomenclature, which is a subcategory of the term “forced migration”. As it was
found that this term, in itself, also presents its weaknesses, the potential of the term “internal
refugee” is briefly discussed as well, a potential nomenclature that would apparently resolve or,
at least, support the issue, in terms of the scope of work of the United Nations. Furthermore, the
relevance of discussing nomenclature in contexts of technological environmental disasters was
concluded to be valid since the gaps related to their lack of definition generate precedents that
directly impact the identity of victims, access to rights, and the distribution of responsibilities,
which often proves to be strategic and convenient for those responsible. Likewise, the accusations
of incompetence, violence, and environmental racism on the part of the Fundação Renova, an
entity that makes decisions unilaterally under the eyes of the State, were found to be valid, most
of the time making use of the problems surrounding the nomenclature to continue victimizing the
    same people.

  • The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed and accentuated the social disparities that are structural in the reality of the Brazilian population, with the most affected social groups being those that, historically, are subject to greater vulnerability and exclusion, in terms of access to public policies of inclusion and basic and essential services. One of the main adverse effects resulting from this health crisis was the increase in Food Insecurity in the country and, in the context of the field of study of this research, quilombola territories suffered greatly from this consequence. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze strategies that can mitigate this very sad scenario and, therefore, this study aims to bring to light the rescue of Food Sovereignty as a struggle and resistance of the remaining quilombo community Dona Bilina, located in Rio da Prata , in the West Zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, an area that, during Portuguese colonization, was characterized as Sertão Carioca. Furthermore, this study also aims to record the process of recognition of the selected traditional community as quilombola, as well as the ancestral knowledge in agroecology, which was exceptional for the construction and maintenance of the community garden developed by the quilombolas, their respective leadership, partner associations, and volunteers, as a way of assisting in the subsistence of families who are in this territory, as well as ensuring local Food and Nutritional Security.

  • The process of development of humanity went through significant transformations through the use and exploration of different natural sources of energy. Over time, technological development associated with the reproduction of capitalist practice ended up potentiating the effects of environmental imbalances, considering mainly the exaggerated consumption patterns adopted by post-modern society. Inserted in this context of global alert, in Brazil the principles of environmental protection and preservation, as well as sustainable development practices are guaranteed in legislation, being advocated through Law 6.938/81 that instituted the National Environmental Policy (PNAMA) and consolidated from the Federal Constitution of 1988. From this framework Brazil is concentrating efforts on the implementation and promotion of environmental policies, seeking to reconcile socioeconomic development with the maintenance of environmental protection measures. Meanwhile, from 2018 it was possible to observe a shift in the country’s political stance towards environmental problems, with the negligence of the federal government during successive environmental disasters as well as the implementation of Interim Measures and Bills to the contrary advocated by current legislation, legitimizing illegal activities in areas of protection. Thus, this research seeks to analyze at the federal level the proposed changes in environmental policies between 2018 and 2022, in order to identify the negative impacts of these measures on the country's socio-environmental development, protection and preservation of Brazilian biodiversity the consequences of these actions for Brazil's image in the global context of external relations.

  • The Atlantic Forest is the most threatened Brazilian biome in terms of biodiversity loss and fragmentation, however, even with its original extent drastically reduced, it still harbors a huge number of species of animals and plants, in addition to playing key roles in environmental quality and in ecological balance. Fragmentation and deforestation usually occur as a result of agricultural activities and urban development, it is worth noting that most of the Brazilian population lives in the Atlantic Forest region, making it even more vulnerable to these problems, being essential efforts that tend to conserve -there. The present work deals with the topic of conservation of the Atlantic Forest, having as object of study the municipality of Itaguaí, RJ, investigating aspects of the native flora, alterations in the composition of the landscape, occurrence of endangered and/or endemic species, giving rise to a discussion about urban development and anthropic pressures on the Atlantic Forest biome, the use of geotechnologies for landscape ecology analysis and the importance of databases on biodiversity for preservation actions. Data from botanical collections of the virtual herbaria SpeciesLink and JABOT were used to characterize the flora, and from the geographic information systems of MapBiomas, to calculate landscape metrics. Data from botanical collections available on the internet were filtered according to the study area and selected according to the existence of a description of location and geographic coordinates associated with each collection record, so that they could be georeferenced. In addition to georeferencing, data were submitted to analysis of nomenclature, origin and endemism, as well as analysis of category/degree of threat of extinction. A total of 1,578 records were collected, excluding those that did not have species identification or collected outside the study area, resulting in a selection of 332 (21.86%) of the records, which were submitted, among other analyses, to the calculation of the extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupation (AOO), using the GeoCAT tool, in order to determine the category and degree of threat of the georeferenced species within the study area. Several records of vulnerable and endangered species were verified, with emphasis on some angiosperms that are indisputably endangered: Aphelandra nemoralis Nees (Acanthaceae), Bauhinia albicans Vogel (Fabaceae), Begonia epipsila Brade (Begoniaceae) e Solanum pachimatium Dunal (Solanaceae). In the landscape composition analyses, the time period between 1985 and 2021 was considered, using the MapBiomas matrix data (land use and occupation charts), processed with the help of the LecoS plugin, available for the QGIS software, to obtain the landscape statistics. In summary, the data generated from that analysis pointed to a slight expansion (3.4%) of forest cover in Itaguaí, RJ, concomitant with fragmentation processes, considering the number of fragments (277 in 1985 and 455 in 2021) and their average size (323,129m2 in 1985 and 217,576m2 in 2021). There was also an expansion of the non-vegetated area, by 5.7%, between one moment and another. Analyzing the general context, it was verified that the Brazilian Atlantic forest suffered a decrease of more than 45 billion square meters of areas covered by forests and natural formations in the analyzed period, which represents a serious threat to the biome.

  • The municipality of Lençóis, in the state of Bahia, is known as the “Portal da Chapada Diamantina” and is recognized nationally and internationally for the natural beauty of its geological formations and its rivers and waterfalls. However, the benefits of this tourism have been concentrated in the urban area of the municipality, making rural populations historically on the margins of this process. However, some municipal public management actions have been trying to encourage the development of family farming, among other strategies, based on the implementation of rural tourism, as a pluriactivity with the potential to generate benefits for these populations. It is within this context that this work proposes to develop a proposal for a community-based tourism itinerary in the territory of the village of Volta do Américo, based on the vision and interests of the community involved. To this end, in addition to surveying references and studying similar initiatives in the country, participatory methodologies will be used, in order to make it possible for the desires and worldview of the community to be the guiding principle of this construction, in line with the premises of Grassroots Tourism Community.

  • This research work aims to analyze, at a regional level, the context of precariousness of several Public Policies in the eight (8) Indigenous Lands of the State of Rio de Janeiro, of the Guarani Mbyá, Nhandéva and Pataxó ethnic groups, in the ethnographic area that covers the Municipalities of Angra dos Reis, Maricá and Paraty, and how this situation has directly affected the collective health and food security of these Traditional Communities, by threatening the reproduction of their way of life, ancestral knowledge and culture. On the other hand, it intends to contribute to the recognition of the leading role of Indigenous Peoples in protecting the environment and agrodiversity of biodiversity, environmental conservation and maintaining climate balance, as guardians of socio-biodiversity, in a context of increasing climate change. We also sought to analyze which collegial spaces, or "Popular Participation" (CRFB/1988), have been occupied by indigenous people with their demands for historically neglected Public Policies. The Case Study was guided by the Participant Observation method with the application of qualitative research with semi-structured interviews with indigenous leaders, managers of the Unified Health System (SUS) and researchers; fieldwork; bibliographical survey and documentary analysis of reference literature. The results obtained included: the absence of a Food and Nutritional Security Program in Indigenous Villages in the State of RJ; and little transparency of information about the water quality monitoring system for human consumption and Water Safety Plans (PSA) recommended by the Pan American Health Organization of the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). In the 21st Century, of the eight indigenous villages in the State, only three (3) of them have their areas demarcated and approved by the public authorities, which has caused an intensification of land conflicts and risks to the environmental conservation of these traditionally occupied territories (TTOs). A collective feeling of "hope with struggle" permeates the expectations surrounding the 'new institutionality' generated from the creation of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI, 2023), where their historical demands for the recognition of citizenship rights, construction of Good Living (Buen Vivir) and the search for a “Land without Evil”.

  • Seed storage in the Brazilian semiarid is a traditional practice that contributes to the
conservation of agrobiodiversity. In a region where the absence of gloves compromises
agricultural production in the summer, water is stored, seeds and forage is a strategy for
permanence and survival in the hinterland, and makes up a stock culture. This work presents
six experiences of collective custody of traditional seeds in semi-arid communities in Ceará,
and through the bibliographic basis, seeks to discuss seed management, with a view to the
conservation of seeds of agricultural biodiversity. n As six communities visited are part of the

  • The National Policy for Solid Waste, approved in 2010, among other deliberations, determined the end of waste disposal in landfills, as well as its total extinction. With this, it was observed an increasing installation and operation of sanitary landfills, to hold urban solid waste. Thus, the present work proposed to perform a quali-quantitative analysis of the use of environmental management tools and their relation to efficiency and performance of sanitary landfills in operation in the state of Rio de Janeiro. To this end, the final destination of municipal solid waste by the municipalities of the state was tracked, as well as all the actions taken by the municipal authorities after the approval of the PNRS. With the panorama of sanitary landfills in operation in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a case study was carried out with the objective of identifying which are the environmental management instruments used to guarantee the local environmental quality and the continuity of the environmental parameters in conformity, as well as to promote discussion about its relevance. The waste treatment center called CTR Nova Iguaçu, located in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, was adopted as the study. This research was carried out by mapping the most expressive environmental aspects and impacts of the enterprise, so that, afterwards, a form capable of identifying such instruments could be prepared. The landfill under study operates and receives a volume of about 5 tons of waste daily. The data collected was analyzed in order to illustrate the relevance of the use of environmental management tools in landfills in terms of environmental performance and to encourage the creation of an environmental management indicator, to be applied in solid urban waste landfills, based on the ISO 14000 series of standards. The research positively reinforces that the use of environmental management tools for the operation of solid waste in a landfill is indispensable and a protagonist, as a tool for the maintenance of environmental preservation and consequent safety of the operation. It is proposed that the information on the environmental management tools be used by the equivalent landfills in a systemic and facilitated manner, as well as the exchange of successful cases, in order to avoid the recurrence of deviations, not only in loco but also expanded to the distinct realities of the active landfills in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

  • Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have campuses where thousands of people circulate daily. Due to this characteristic, university campuses need to be managed from several aspects, including environmental management, in order the relationship between the university community and the environment can be more harmonious and less impactful. Although there are successful specific actions for sustainability in the UFRRJ campus, this HEI does not currently have an institutionalized environmental policy, which means a high potential for the development in such area when compared to universities that are at the forefront of sustainable practices. That said, this study aimed to understand criteria and actions to achieve environmental sustainability adopted by universities that are at the forefront of organizational sustainability; understand the perception of the UFRRJ community in relation to the application of sustainable practices at the university; to gather institutional information about the current situation of sustainability indicators at UFRRJ in the six thematic axes of the Agenda Ambiental na Administração Pública (A3P) and analyze the potential of application of these axes in this HEI. The research is a case study that uses as a method for data collection and analysis the application of questionnaires to the academic community; conduction of semi-structured interviews with UFRRJ employees and also obtaintion of official information in the IES documents. As a result, the study proposes to provide the current diagnosis of the degree of sustainability of the UFRRJ campus according to the axes of the A3P; a summary of the perception and expectations of the academic community regarding this topic and discussions and proposals of potential for the application of sustainable practices of A3P in the UFRRJ Seropédica campus

  • The linear economic model in which we operate, characterized by the pattern of extraction, production, consumption and disposal, generates several environmental impacts, including Climate Change. The Circular Economy presents itself as an alternative to this model, as it seeks to reduce the use of raw materials, maintaining the added value of the product as long as possible, in addition to promoting the minimization of waste and optimization of recycling processes. Fashion products are one of the most consumed worldwide, and contribute significantly to Climate Change. Q The Fashion Sector is an important player in the global economy, in Brazil and in the State of Rio de Janeiro, generating jobs and income. The present study aimed to answer whether the inclusion of Circular Economy strategies can lead to the reduction of GHG emissions in the Fashion sector of Rio de Janeiro, through a case study of a 100% cotton shirt, analyzing the changes in the emission profile of GHG comparing before and after the introduction of Circular Economy strategies, using the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool through the Simparo software. As a result, the study identified four main groups of circular strategies applicable to the Fashion Sector: closing the loop; narrow the cycle; slow down the cycle and regenerate the cycle. In addition, it characterized the profile of establishments in the Fashion Sector in the State of Rio de Janeiro, which is made up of 93.51% of micro and small companies and made up of 80.24% of commerce, 16.35% of industries and 3 .41% of services. It also identified, through the case study, that the carbon footprint of the product with circular strategies is smaller than that of production in the linear model. As conclusions it can be inferred that circular strategies applied to fashion products can lead to a reduction of up to 40% in the carbon footprint of products.

  • Fishing nets represent an expressive amount of the macroplastic in our ocean, and asides being another form of plastic pollution, they also cause ghost fishing - fishing gear that has been lost, dumped or abandoned and continues to capture animals with no fishing outcome, in a way both the environment as well as local fisherman communities are prejudiced by the depletion of fish stocks. This work presents a local solution and a new social-environmental business model, based on reusing fishing nets. The first chapter presents a case study in traditional coastal communities of Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, Brazil, where local fisherman and former fisherman collect those fishing nets and manually sew new itens. This work analysed the results of this initiative, as well as its perception by community members and consumers. It was observed that the initiative is important in preserving traditional knowledge, generating revenue for locals and facilitating waste management. During the nine months analyzed, 500kg of discarded fishing nets were collected, more than 10000 products were made and over R$70.000,00 reais was generated for the 10 families are involved. In the second chapter, the main results were compiled and a manual is proposed in order to guide the replication of this alternative in other regions. In summary, this social model presents a possible local solution to a global challenge, and its possible to be adapted to the realities of different coastal communities.

  • Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) refers to the use of ecosystem services as a strategy to face the adverse effects of climate change. In this context, climate change tends to exert, to a greater or lesser extent, some kind of pressure on different sectors of society, thus increasing the demand for solutions to global issues such as poverty, economic development, population growth, sustainable development and management of natural resources. The ability to respond to these stimuli requires a high level of coordination and articulation on the part of managers and representatives of different sectors of society with regard to decision-making and the construction of well-thought-out solutions, mainly related to the water issue. With regard to water governance, it is essential to converge policies and planning of water resources and to establish effective governance in hydrographic basins. In this context, this research is inserted, whose main objective is to apply the AbE methodology to carry out the diagnosis and integration of climate risk within the scope of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ). Methodologically, this study adopted the EbA approach, taking into account the guidelines described in the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) booklet for integrating climate risks in planning, which was based on the OECD Policy Guide. Initially, the climate lens was applied by reading the available literature to obtain data and information for the region covered, in order to assess the current climate and how it should operate in the future in relation to the sustainability of ecosystems. From the information obtained, the climatic risks for water security in the RMRJ were identified and, therefore, the inherent diagnosis was elaborated. After the diagnosis, the necessary measures will be determined to adapt the system of interest in relation to climate change, in order to reduce the potential impacts evidenced, either by reducing the exposure or sensitivity of the system to a threat, or even increasing its capacity. adaptive. Therefore, this research contributes so that the region covered can achieve a vision of the future oriented to face the adverse effects caused by climate change, mainly to increase water security and avoid or reduce environmental, social and economic losses and vulnerabilities.

  • The research in question portrays the importance of intersectoral policies to achieve sustainable practices, from an interdisciplinary perspective, so that they are effective. In view of the importance of the theme, the objective of this work was to propose the application of sustainable practices in communities in the west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, having as main object of case study, the Community of Terreirão, in the neighborhood of Recreio dos Bandeirantes. To this end, it is specifically intended to survey current national public housing policies, analyze existing practices in target communities, identify through research the main socio-environmental factors of buildings, raise awareness of the importance of safe housing, suggest constructive guidelines to the population and train residents enabling sustainable solutions. This is even more justified because studies report the high number of people affected by the pandemic and refer to the need to promote sustainable practices. The research carried out was exploratory and qualitative-quantitative in nature. After approval by the Research Ethics Committee of the Rural University, data were collected in February 2022, in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, in the Terreirão community, located in the west of the city of Rio de Janeiro, where a sampling was carried out. for convenience, and interviews were carried out with social actors involved, after agreeing with the free and informed consent form, electronically through the platform Google Forms, totaling 94 respondents. In addition, socio-demographic data available from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics were used and documentary collections from the competent bodies, such as the Municipal Department of Urbanism, of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, among others, were consulted. There was alarming data such as the unemployed, reaching 18.09% and 20.21% received government aid, such as the Brazil aid. Fifty-four and 44.26% of the participants had their own home. The presence of a sewage network prevailed in 67.02% of the households, in 88.30% of the households had water supply and 93.62% reported having a water tank. As for their own knowledge about sustainability, other people considered them to be important, including the reduction of electricity consumption was listed by 67.7% of respondents. When making the decision to use recycled products, it was found that price is the determining factor for 55.2% of the participants. During the observational research, it investigated, among other aspects, the precariousness of public services on site, such as the lack of bus terminals for public transport, the absence of effective sewage treatment in the neighborhood. It is believed that this data, as well as the photographic record carried out in the research, may serve as a warning to the authorities of the need for improvements in the site. It is expected that the strategies applied in this research serve as a model of low-cost sustainable practices, which can be reproduced in other locations, considering the different realities and potential of each region. Finally, it is considered, among other aspects, that among the governmental priorities, there is the protection of the most vulnerable populations from the economic and social point of view, through effective public policies of housing and urbanism. Sustainable practices for the community in question are suggested in order to minimize the negative impacts they suffer from the lack of appropriate conditions for decent and fair housing for all.

  • It is well known that learning contributed to scientific technical progress and was a driving force for the evolution of humanity, but evolution happened with the unbridled exploration of nature, which caused environmental problems around the world such as rising temperature of the Planet, melting of the Arctic and Antarctica, acidification of the oceans etc. as these problems caused disturbances for humanity it was necessary to carry out analyses and reflections on the risks of human development, to seek a harmonious coexistence with nature, and one of the ways of doing so is through knowledge. Education is an important process to raise awareness among people about the preservation of ecosystems, because throughout history training has proved to be a participatory and continuous movement of civilization that has contributed to the creation of innovations, technological advances and, therefore, should be used for critical awareness of environmental problems. This research aims to evaluate whether the education that is taught is sufficient to make people aware of the importance of environmental preservation and to adopt more sustainable attitudes in their daily lives. Considering that the study empowers individuals and that knowledge is important for the person to have an active participation in society as an agent of change, then an education that stimulates the formation of a citizenship with environmental bias and that contributes to preserve and conserve the environment is essential, and this can be achieved with an ethical posture of respect for nature and in favor of ecocentric sustainability.

In Brazil, they are associated with the Atlantic Forest biome and exist from the Northeast to the South of the country, thus making up part of the coastal zone. They are important because they play an ecological and economic role for society, provide the reproduction of animals, being a nursery and shelter for several species of aquatic and terrestrial fauna and migratory birds. Mangroves have been at risk due to the pressure exerted by the advance of industrial development, urban growth on the coast and the use of their resources without planning, pollution and factors that cause changes in the physical, chemical and biological properties of the waters, such as landfill, deforestation, fires. , garbage, discharge of sewage and industrial effluents and predatory fishing, thus causing its fragmentation or even its extinction. Thus, the preservation of areas such as the Barão de Mauá Municipal Natural Park (PNMBM) becomes fundamental. The Park is entirely occupied by the mangrove ecosystem, which was reforested after the oil spill in Guanabara Bay in 2000, constituting an Integral Protection Conservation Unit, located in Praia de Mauá (5th District of Magé), and this will be the place development of the present research, whose main objective is to carry out environmental education activities as a practice of sustainable development for the residents of the locality and visitors to the PNMBM. An online questionnaire was developed by Google Forms of evaluation, seeking to collect data on the environmental perception of the residents of Magé, Praia de Mauá and Rio de Janeiro and adjacent regions. It is noted that most participants understand the importance of preserving the Mangrove, claim to know what a Conservation Unit is, climate change and also perceive its effect, however most have not heard about the PNMBM and consequently have not heard about it. visited. In this research, a folder was produced about the PNMBM and a memory game with species of animals and plants in the Park, to raise awareness of the population, highlighting its socio-economic-environmental and climatic importance, actions such as the development of didactic materials such as games and primers. To publicize the Park, the population aims to create a website and/or social networks. It is hoped, with the results of this research, that the population of Mauá will have a new look and value the mangrove ecosystem, understanding its beauty not only visually, but also the very important role it has in the social, economic, historical context, in addition to the capacity that it has to reduce the impacts of global warming, who are aware of the existence of the Barão de Mauá Municipal Natural Park, its role in preserving the mangrove and also the need for its proper and sustainable use.

  •  Although we are in the 21st century, adequate sanitation is still a matter of luxury for many
underdeveloped countries. In Brazil it is no different, several Brazilian cities have inefficient
conditions of supply of adequate sanitation. Itatiaia presents aproblem regarding its basic
sanitation, as it is a municipality that lacks Water Treatment Stations and Sewage Treatment
Stations. This absence reflects on the population and especially on school-age residents.Even
    today,gastrointestinalparasitesthataretransmitted throughcontaminatedwatercause
cognitive and body development problems and even make fatal victims. Given this problem,
this research sought ways to portray the panorama of basic sanitation proposed by the
municipality of Itatiaia/RJ. Thecollection points and water reservoirs and the sampling points
for analysis of bathing and potability of water were surveyed. It was also necessary to use
sanitary indicators to bring to light the data referring to the city. And last, but not least, it was
necessary how the issue of water and sewage is addressed by school curriculum documents.
This is a literature review and exploratory research where information was sought in the state
of the art and also used information contained in the website of the City Hall itself, other
information was taken from government internet sites, whether state or federal, websites
internet services from non-governmental organizations. Laws, Decrees and Ordinances were
also used to support the research. The results found were characteristic for the absence of basic
sanitation, since only providing piped and chlorinated water is not enough. Just collecting
sewage, where there is a collection, and not treating it is not enough and the indicators have
shown. Despite being a city with no basic sanitation, very little is addressed by the curriculum
documents used in municipal schools. Soon, it was noticed that the municipality of Itatiaia lacks
more assertive actions regarding quality basic sanitation and this reflects on the population in
    general.

  • Flip-flop sandals (finger slippers) are the darlings and walk on the feet of people from all over the world and from all social classes, representing for many the first contact with shoes. Flip-flops have an indeterminate life cycle and the incorrect disposal of their waste causes environmental impacts. Therefore, actions that seek to assess the destination of waste and offer alternatives for its reuse in the production of other useful products play an important role in the reduction of environmental impacts arising from disposal in the environment. Thus, this project aimed to study the socioeconomic profile of the consumption of flip flops made of synthetic rubber, in the city of Volta Redonda, to quantify the volume of slippers sold, through questionnaires and interviews carried out with society, schools, waste pickers and the center of recycling, quantifying the volume of waste from slippers discarded in the Municipality, estimating a logistics for collecting this material, and finally, proposing a possible reuse of waste discarded from the flip-flops. In order to gather information about the production, use and disposal of this type of product, we carry out a survey of secondary data on sites such as IBGE, Abrelpe and Abicalçados. To raise the volume of slippers sold in the city's stores, we interviewed representatives of local businesses. In order to understand the volume of discarded sandals, a questionnaire was applied to consumers in Volta Redonda, with questions about the consumption and disposal of these sandals. With the analysis of the responses collected, it was up to us to seek alternatives to develop new products that derive from this residue. The project aroused interest in the most diverse individuals, creating a bridge that goes from empirical to scientific knowledge, added to ideals of sustainability and mitigation of environmental damage, resulting in good practice intentions, aimed at the correct disposal of this material.

  • Civil construction has a fundamental role in the country's development; however, it is the sector that consumes the most natural resources, which makes it one of the main when it comes to sustainable development. In Brazil, there are efforts to define sustainability indicators in this sector, in order to determine which constructions, cause less environmental impacts. Therefore, this work has the central objective to analyze whether LEED certification - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, can be applied to the reality of constructions in Brazil. In this work, a diagnosis of the global panorama of sustainability and sustainable development was carried out, mainly with regard to its reflection in the built space. Results showed that LEED has criteria and parameters according to the local context, from which it was created, strongly based on North American standards, becoming inefficient when applied in other countries or regions, as it may not include important local problems and specificities, like the Brazilian case.

  • What moves people to engage in causes, be they social, environmental, political, cultural or other? What is the role and relevance of communication in this process? What can you have in the way of communicating that touches people, mobilizes, leads individuals to different stages of engagement, to social changes? And how to communicate by promoting empathy, trust, action? The present study aims to investigate and bring answers - and new provocations - to these contemporary concerns and so pressing in the hyperconnected world that we live today. Technologies are transforming so rapidly the way we communicate, communicate and relate, bringing, on the one hand, distortions and manipulations that affect the network of social trust and negatively impact the way we are and be in the world, generating social setbacks and differentiated nuances of violence. On the other hand, this same matrix allows a plurality of voices, new inspirational narratives, aimed at expanding rights, reducing inequalities, and a number of opportunities to contribute to building a more just, democratic and sustainable society. Methodologically, it will be a qualitative and exploratory research, which projects an original path in the literature review, followed by diving, through a case study, in the communicative experience of three organizations / projects / causes, ending in the elaboration of a practical, digital and accessible guide as a product beyond the actual dissertation, oriented to NGOs, projects and movements, with tips on how to communicate their causes to mobilize and engage followers. • With the Rio 92 Conference and the beginning of discussions on sustainable city building and biodiversity conservation, the 2030 Agenda set the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a view to reaching a future for the next generations. . Using environmental perception as an object of study, it is possible to understand the relationship between man and the surrounding environment, providing education practices for sustainable development. In this study we will adopt the term sustainable development referring to a sustainable lifestyle and attitude in which people are driven to lead a decent and healthy life, and will be addressing the challenges of SDG 11 (Sustainable City and Communities) and SDG 15 (Life Earth), making environmental perception studies relevant. Thus the study will evaluate the environmental perception of university students, teachers, staff and other users of the campus of UFRRJ, regarding landscaping, trees and vascular epiphytes. And also a historical survey study of the university campus. To collect information about the perception of landscaping, trees and epiphytes on campus, we will use the qualitative and quantitative ethnobotany methodology approach, which uses the semi-structured interview as a tool. For the historical landscape survey, a search of documents, photographs, sketches, among others, in the collections of the departments of UFRRJ. It is hoped through the perceptions of students, teachers, staff and users, to contribute to the knowledge of people's empirical knowledge for the development of conservation and environmental education proposals and strategies, and to contribute to the history of the campus landscape that is present. since the implementation of the University. From this perspective, the knowledge gained from this study can help to establish local public policy strategies to deliver on SDG 11 and SDG 15.

  • Food is a human right and school feeding in Brazil is a guaranteed and opportunized right through the National School Feeding Program. This research aimed to contribute to the promotion of food and nutritional sovereignty and security for students at the Technical College of the Rural University, based on the analysis of the National School Food Program and the actions of Food and Nutrition Education; to understand how students eat during the school period, as there is no school supply; to verify the actions taken by the college in the formation of healthy eating habits of its students, the approach to food and nutrition education by teachers, as well as the guarantee of food security; also identify the actions taken by College of the Rural University to assist its students during the Covid-19 pandemic and how it impacted the daily food of students and teachers. Data were collected between November 2018 and March 2021, using a questionnaire applied to the managers of the Rural University, to identify the existence of transfers from the National School Feeding Program; analysis of documents found on the website of the Rural University, College of the Rural University, the Transparency Portal of the federal government, the National Education Development Fund; questionnaires applied online; observational research in the experiences carried out in the activities with the students of the college. This project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee at Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro under protocols No. 705/2016 and 797/2016. The information and data collected by this research prove that there is no school feeding policy at College of the Rural University, despite the existence of National School Feeding Program resources for the provision of school meals. Of the 79 students, from different courses, who participated in the research, 60.8% bring ready meals from home to eat at the school and only 6.3% use the university restaurant. During the school period 51.9% of the interviewees chose to consume low-nutritious foods such as fried or baked snacks and 63.3% of the students consumed cookies. During the pandemic, 50 students were assisted with basic food baskets, eggs and vegetables from the school's production, fruits and vegetables from the Food and Meat Acquisition Program. The school has a staff of 68 teachers, 13 answered the questionnaire, and 84.6% said they addressed the theme of food in the discipline they teach. Regarding the implementation and implementation of the National School Feeding Program at College of the Rural University, the leaders were unaware of the existence of the transfer of the National Education Development Fund referring to the National School Feeding Program; they seem unaware that food is a social right guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and by Law 11,947 / 09; the inclusion of the theme of food by teachers is low, as well as food and nutrition education in the teaching-learning process; College of the Rural University students are in a situation of food and nutritional insecurity, as there is no guarantee of food and nutritional security on an equal basis. It is hoped that the data collected by this research will favor the dialogue about the importance of ensuring school meals in the school itself and for adopting measures that assist students in this matter within the scope of College of the Rural University.

  • Desertification is the process of soil degradation from natural and / or man-made causes in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. In addition to its global reach, desertification has been considered one of the most serious problems affecting social, economic and environmental aspects. Identifying these regions can support the planning of the rational use of water since these areas have water restrictions and are affected by climatic variability. One of the ways to assess desertification is from the aridity index (IA), which allows the classification of areas according to their climatic condition. In this context, this study aims to identify areas susceptible to desertification from the aridity index for the regions of Brazil. The methodology used projections of eight models for the scenarios SSP 4.5 and SSP 8.5 in the period from 2021 to 2100, in comparison to the current period from 1990 to 2018 obtained from the CRU-TS v4. The results indicated an increase in AI in all regions of the country and susceptibility to desertification.

  • The management of waste from health services is complex, as it involves intra-establishment and extra-establishment activities. Regarding the intra-establishment steps, the responsibility of the RSS generator itself is the responsibility and for this purpose it must keep its daily management processes and practices in line with the determinations of the health or environmental surveillance bodies and local bodies responsible for the urban cleaning service. However, in the extra-establishment stage, where responsibility is shared between the generator and the service provider hired by the health institution, management becomes even more comprehensive. In this external stage, a series of risk variables, including accidents, physical risks, biological risks and occupational risks for workers, need to be considered. Considering that the dumps, true deposits of garbage in the open, still prevail as a current scenario of solid waste management in Brazil, the adoption of an efficient and permanent system of operational control of all the stages that make up the RSS management becomes essential. In this sense, this research will seek to understand how this process of external SSR management occurs in public and private hospital units in Brazil. The work pointed out how fragile is the knowledge about the Emergency Plan of the contracted company, reported by 53% of the respondents, sustainability managers. Assuming that they are the most qualified people within the chain of custody, this knowledge should be prioritized by contracted companies and health establishments. It was identified that the discussions around possible solutions to mitigate the risks inherent in the stages of collection and external transport of RSS have been debated among health professionals. This theme even included the Sanitary Surveillance Forum of RSS, held in 2016, in São Paulo. As an alternative, it is proposed to implement the containerization of the internal external collection of biological waste as a fundamental measure for the safety in the storage, transport and final destination of the RSS. The use of containers or containers for the transport of biological waste is already common practice in developed countries, however, in Brazil, it is punctual and restricted to a few health institutions. Considering the studies on waste management of health services more directly cover health professionals, it is recommended for future studies research related to professionals working in public and private collection of RSS.

  • The city of Rio de Janeiro has had social inequalities since its creation. Throughout its history, the growth and development of the city were marked by care for some privileged areas and the absence of public authorities in other areas.
What if we could take care of our neighborhood together with our neighbors? Take care of the space in which we circulate every day. Having greater decision-making power in caring for green areas, equipment and urban furniture, and having an institution that brings together residents in an assembly to make decisions about the use of space. Decisions about that hole that persists in the pavement, that tree that needs pruning, the uniformity of the sidewalks to allow everyone's accessibility, verifying whether commercial establishments are using the common area for their own benefit, curbing the private use of public space such as the use of parking spaces on the streets for personal use.
The need for a new approach in the management of cities is necessary due to the complexity of spaces and social dynamics and their interrelationships today. Centralized forms of government directed urban development, being influenced by the private sector, often creating projects that lead to social segregation.
What would our cities look like if they were designed and governed from the bottom up, by the citizens themselves, like Common Use Resources (CRU)? What and what are the RUC? How could this approach benefit social development and sustainable development?
The present work addresses these issues through an exploratory research on the theoretical framework of common use resources, especially on urban ones, on Brazilian legislation in specific laws that would help in the construction of a public policy......The evolution Brazilian legislation since its last Federal Constitution with laws that encourage and create mechanisms for popular participation and other laws that allow the creation of associations, cooperatives and condominiums to give concreteness to collective actions in the management of common use resources.

  • Brazil is a country of extreme social inequality, and many times for this reason it has aggravated situations of poverty, school dropout and violence. This inequality is the result of several social processes that have occurred since the date of the country's colonization and of several others that unfortunately occur to the present day. The way in which society understands money and its relationship of accumulation with it is one of the reasons why inequality has been worsening in different parts of the world. It is extremely necessary to understand how the evolution of this concept has contributed to the current scenario of our country. One of the solutions that has been used in order to minimize the consequences of this inequality is the implementation of some projects using social currencies. This concept is completely adherent to Agenda 2030, which has in its structure at least one direct objective of eradicating social inequality and some other objectives that indirectly combat inequality globally. Maricá, municipality of Rio de Janeiro, is one of the places where the use of social currency. The project that takes place in the municipality is an initiative to distribute income from oil royalties through a local digital currency. Despite the improvement in income on the part of the population, we were unable to accurately envision the social improvement experienced by the population benefiting from the project or by other stakeholders, as there are no metrics and indicators that demonstrate the social issue. To this end, this work proposes to analyze the social consequences of the implementation of the digital social currency through the Mumbuca project in the municipality of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, analyzes of data already existing in the city hall, quantitative questionnaires on the perception of improvement in the living conditions of beneficiaries and traders, open interviews with residents of the municipality and ethnographic studies. I hope that at the end of all the analyzes I can conclude that the implementation of the social currency brings tangible and noticeable benefits to the local population and that this social project proves to be replicable to other cities and municipalities.

  • In the socio-environmental moment that we live with the absence of specific public policies aimed at the collectors of recyclable materials, it is essential to analyze the implications arising from the deactivation of the Jardim Gramacho Metropolitan Landfill (AMJG). Pointed out as one of the environmental achievements of the Olympic Games, the closing of the AMJG brought a series of promises aimed at the recovery of the mangrove area, the revitalization of the neighborhood, selective collection, professional qualification of thousands of collectors and Environmental Education. Given this context, the general objective of this dissertation was to analyze orally the impacts of the closing of Jardim Gramacho Landfill and its perceived consequences by the collectors who survived and still survive the sale of recyclable materials. The narratives of collectors of recyclable materials, built from interviews based on oral history, which is a methodology of dialogue, enhanced the memory work of these subjects who suffered and still suffer the consequences of unsustainable development. This research has a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approach, whose data collection used data triangulation via document analysis, interviews and participant observation. In this territory of social struggles and survival space, over the years there has been not only the receipt of waste of various natures, but the spread of misery and poverty. It is with this understanding that throughout this dissertation is discussed and problematized the issue, therefore, of inequality and poverty that "pushed" men and women to the AMJG. From this, therefore, this research is justified due to the need to empower the empowerment of individuals and groups that are largely forgotten by public and official history, bringing out perspectives on the multiple discourses of these stories and the contradictions that they guide the conflicts between the landfill universe, the (dis) interests of public management and society. The assumption is that only by ensuring that those excluded from the system have a voice can a critical reflection of these spaces be initiated.

  • This research carried out the floristic survey of Non-conventional Edible Plants (PANC) at Travessia Teresópolis - Petrópolis trail, at Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO), RJ, through three expeditions. Along a sinuous transect of 27 km in length and approximately 3 m in width, wild plants with edible potential were collected. The collected material was photographed, georeferenced and herborized. Subsequently, identification was carried out in virtual herbariums, with specialists, and the literature review on the edible use of the identified plants. We identified 93 edible and potentially edible species – 54 genera, distributed in 35 families (APG IV) present in different parts of the trail. Asteraceae (10), Begoniaceae (9) and Passifloraceae (9) were the families with the highest species richness . The stretch between Teresópolis and Pedra do Sino showed greater richness of food species (58). We concluded that PANC have enormous potential to be used in activities of an educational aspect and pedagogical tourism, highlighting the gastronomic dimension of plant biodiversity present in conservation units, and in projects of strategic nature in the Park's buffer areas.

  • The region of Poço Fundo (MG) is internationally recognized for producing a distinctive coffee crop, characterized for being organic, familiar and with high quality. In order to put attention on actions taken by family farmers, the present work is developed from a social bias that analyzes a small parcel of the Cooperative of Family Farmers from Poço Fundo (COOPFAM), entitled MOBI - Organized Women Seeking Equality. As a way of classifying certain elements found in this experience, this work analyzes social factors in MOBI that makes its creation and continuous development possible. By bounding the elements that have conditioned rural women's independence under the scope of COOPFAM, one can think of factors that can (or not) be replicable in other instances – promotting female rural empowerment and rural sustainability. It was also thought throught participatory methodologies, in order to know the reality of the producers and, in general, analyze some of the strategies made by the peasant population to face their problems.

  • The global alert on inequality, present in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has had little effect on Brazilian society, especially in institutions linked to the labor market, where the problem of racial inequality seems without prospect of improvement, according to research institutes. In this sense, the following research deals with the theme of racial inequality in the labor market in light of the goals and commitments assumed within the scope of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective was to analyze and discuss the contribution of the SDGs in tackling racial inequality in the labor market, focusing on objective number 10 (ten), which deals with the reduction of inequality within and between countries. To illustrate the debate on the main research topic, the research included the work of the Ethos Institute, a civil society organization of public interest, which works in the area of social and environmental responsibility with private companies. The investigation was developed based on the analysis of a theoretical framework and secondary data. The analysis of theoretical framework supported the interview stage and its analysis, which utilized a qualitative approach and was carried out with professionals from the Ethos Institute. Initially, the paper presents a discussion on the concept of sustainable development and the contribution of the SDGs to racial equality in the labor market. Racial equality, a theme that has been extensively investigated by numerous fields of study, is addressed in the research through various lenses such as the Racial Equality Statute, inequality in the labor market and psychological effects in the most affected group. Finally, the research shows how the Ethos Institute has been working with the theme, considering both its internal practices and those directed at other companies. The analysis carried out indicates that the global agreements, as well as the national ones, which also support the actions of the Ethos Institute, still have an incipient effect, in relation to racial inequality in the labor market. In this sense, one of the main reflections motivated in the research highlights the constant and necessary questioning about the challenges of Agenda 2030 in the face of the current capitalist production model, whose bases of accumulation accentuate the inequalities, especially in countries like Brazil, whose gap between whites and blacks is growing in different aspects of social life.

  • Northeastern Brazil has the perfect climatic conditions necessary for the generation of power from wind - a stable and unidirectional air-flow allows continuous supply.  This favourable environment stimulated the building of a number of wind-farms, some of which are at the final stages of construction. The building of wind-farms, however brings noise, erosion of the soil, deforestation and electromagnetic interference; it also impacts fauna, scenery and local communities and economies in the affected micro-regions. The building of wind-farms in specific locations must therefore take account of all these impacts, direct or indirect, positive or negative. The purpose of this document is to consider and evaluate the social and environmental impacts of the construction of wind-farms.  The initial stage was to gather and review the existing literature on the importance of wind-farms.  The second stage was to conduct semi-structured interviews with the residents of the direct influence area and with the construction managers of the two projects located in Rio Grande do Norte and in Bahia, in order to analyse the impacts on the environment and on the communities in the direct influence area, especially those of socio-economic nature, strongly represented by income generation, through direct and indirect jobs, resulting from investment in wind power generation. In addition to understanding with a critical eye the perception of the residents of the surrounding communities about socio-environmental problems and reflecting on the vision that park managers have regarding socio-environmental problems in the construction and management of enterprises that generate alternative energy sources.

  • In the global context, in which our current food system is one of the main causes of ecosystem degradation, this research sought to reflect on practical solutions for Brazil that promote food security for the population while helping to conserve natural resources, and contribute to the international recommendations that have this vision of integrating forests with food production. Specifically, the research explored the potential for an alternative management of jackfruit (artocarpus heterophyllus) for food purposes as a possible solution in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro in the remnants of the Atlantic Forest. We used a case study of a new development in Xerém, Duque de Caxias, established by the non-governmental organization, Sinal do Vale, which processes and markets a line of products based on green jackfruit, a nutritious and abundant but underutilized food in Brazil. The research investigated the potential of this enterprise and its model of management of the jackfruit for the implementation and integration of Public Policies of forest conservation and Food Security in the Baixada Fluminense. The research also contemplates the possibility of such management generating income for rural landowners in the buffer zones and within the Conservation Units (UC), specifically in a rural territory, Taquara, where the Sinal do Vale (SINAL) aims to absorb the production of farmers family members who inhabit the region.

The research occurred between September 2018 and October 2020 and was by the Committee of Ethics Research as part of the Project “Food Security: intersetoriality in Brazil.” Initially, the survey and analysis of Brazilian public policies considered most relevant for research that address Food and Nutritional Security (SAN) and forest conservation were carried out, highlighting the intersectoral gaps within and between spheres, in addition to the challenges for their Implementation. Then the general potential of the jackfruit management for food purposes was explored from an interdisciplinary perspective, investigating the history, the socioecological role, and the nutritional and gastronomic properties of the jackfruit. Through the SINAL case study, public policies on SAN and forest conservation were analyzed at the local level, assessing conflicts and opportunities within the two spheres in the region of the Taquara Municipal Natural Park in Duque de Caxias. Through the collection of secondary data and field interviews with local public policy actors and rural landowners, the underdevelopment of the region's agricultural sector and the lack of inclusion of SAN in the management actions of the relevant Conservation Units was highlighted. The research also demonstrated the potential of handling jackfruit for food purposes as a more sustainable solution for the control of this exotic species, engaging local managers of protected areas and rural owners with this alternative view. Finally, the possibility of including the green jackfruit as a food in the National School Feeding Program as an action to contribute to the SAN of low-income children in the Baixada Fluminense was investigated. The research created recommendations for future research that would be important for expanding the use of green jackfruit as food and the management of jackfruit in Brazil.

  • The territory of the quilombola community of Alto da Serra do Mar, located in the municipalities of Rio Claro (district of Lídice) and Angra dos Reis, in the region of Costa Verde, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has part of its area called Cameru , superimposed on the Cunhambebe State Park. In order to reconcile the management of this area and encourage the sustainable use of natural assets, a Term of Use Agreement of the overlapping area has been elaborated with the supervision of the Federal Public Ministry of Volta Redonda, which counts on the participation of those involved: quilombola community and state environmental agencies (INEA) and federal land regularization (INCRA). This research, initially interested in analyzing and accompanying the drafting of the Term of Use Agreement, intends to highlight the main perspectives of the subjects involved (state institutions for the execution of public policies, quilombola community, mediating body), possible arrangements, concessions, environmental restrictions that will be presented as solutions for the proposal of a shared management of the overlapping area. Therefore, in addition to the bibliographic survey on the subject of overlaps between conservation units and territories of traditional communities, this research will be used to obtain data through interviews with the interlocutors, field observation in said community and during technical meetings for discussion of said Agreement.

  • The relationship between development and the environment is considered today as a central point in understanding ecological problems. and the concept of sustainable development deals with a new way for society to relate to its environment to ensure its own continuity and that of its external environment. To be sustainable, development should be economically sustained (or efficient), socially inclusive and environmentally prudent/balanced. The transposition of the guiding principles of sustainability, from theory to practice, and the operationalization of the concept of sustainable development has represented a great challenge for the various areas of knowledge, including tourism. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze the development of tourism in Penedo from the perspective of the local population, considering its particularities, idiosyncrasies, colonization characteristics and the processes of territorial transformation. In order to identify the way in which tourism has been appropriated by this population, through a form of sustainable social development. To accomplish this work, a qualitative, interpretive and exploratory research was carried out, with semi-structured interviews with representatives of the social actors participating in the tourism production chain in Penedo. To help interpret the data, we also used the bibliographic research on the theme and the history of Penedo. The DAFO analysis was also used as A methodology for data analysis. Given the sustainability indicators presented, the touristic activity in Penedo is not on the right track. Workers do not have employment stability, are not well remunerated, and thus remain in the margins of development. The DAFO analysis showed that Penedo has good conditions to improve its tourism development and evolve in the life cycle of destinations, renewing its consolidated characteristics and investing in new modalities of tourism to decrease the impact of seasonality and increase the conditions of employment stability for the population.

  • The vascular epiphytic component stands out for its species richness and capacity to contribute to the increased biodiversity of forest formations where it occurs. Among the 35 world biodiversity hotspots, 13 coincide with preferential centers for the occurrence of vascular epiphytes, including the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Despite this, due of it's specific adaptations for canopy occupation, the group is particularly sensitive to habitat changes and land use changes. The Ecological Reserve of Guapiaçu – REGUA (S22 27 14.8608, W42 46 12.9678), Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, Brazil, although inserted in a region of Atlantic Forest Submontana, presents areas in different conservation status that can lead to different configurations of the plant community. This work carried out a survey of the vascular epiphytic Flora found in excerpts from the three main visitation trails of the reserve, in different regeneration stages of, as well as in ancient trees (relic trees) found along these trails. In each track, a regular plot was sampled, consisting of 30 trees with CBH > 30cm and at least 25 meters distant from each other and 10 more relict trees. The vascular epiphytes found were collected when possible, besides photographed and the data related to floristic, ecological classification, dispersion, pollination, conservation status of the species were sampled, systalized and analyzed. From the data analysis, it was possible to conclude the dominance that certain more generalist species exert in modified environments. We recorded 57 species of vascular epiphytes, with the families Bromeliaceae, Polypodiaceae and Orchidaceae being the most representative. The genera with the greatest species richness were Pleopeltis, Tillandsia and Vriesea. The most representative ecological category was that of facultative epiphytes. The entomofilia was the main pollination syndrome and anemocoria, the main dispersion syndrome found. Regarding conservation, one species is classified as almost endangered and another is vulnerable, however, most species are reported as non-assessed. The most abundant and frequent species in this survey, as well as those endowed with flashy and/or aesthetically interesting inflorescences were photographed and compiled in a local epiphytes field guide, aimed at the general public. There is an introductory section, with information on the main plant groups, epiphytic sinusia and citizen science initiatives. To compose the guide, we selected information pertinent to each species, such as distribution in Brazil, brief morphological descriptions, as well as occasional curiosities.

  • The report released by the United Nations Program on Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT) in 2016 estimates that approximately a quarter of the world's population lives in shantytowns and informal housing. In addition, data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO) show that in large urban centers the low-income population, especially women and children, are the most affected in terms of lack of security food and nutrition. The city of Rio de Janeiro reflects the accelerated urbanization process that occurred in the last decades, due to the intense flow of rural migrants and the increase in the proportion of irregular housing. Of the heads of families, 50% receive income less than two minimum wages and of these 22.03% live in favela (IBGE, Demographic Census, 2010). The distancing of food production spaces, financial constraints, together with less access to fresh food space and the increase in ultraprocessed products in poorer regions result in so-called food waste. In this scenario, considering the social, environmental and economic vulnerability of these territories, it can be observed in areas such as the Grotão (suburb of Penha), located in the northern part of the city of Rio de Janeiro, local initiatives of collectives that develop strategies by means of urban agriculture practices to contribute to the improvement of the distribution of healthy food in these communities, promoting, in addition to food and nutritional security, culture, economy and sustainable urban regeneration. In this project, we sought to investigate, through the perception of three study groups living in this region, the ways of accessing this community to health food, low cost and free of pesticides. In addition to the application of interviews, the research was also carried out through observations and records of the on-site food sales spaces. Once understood the different forms of access in this territory, we sought to subsidize the debate for the construction of a public policy of urban agriculture for the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

  • The creation of protected areas has been one of the main strategies for nature conservation around the world. The model for the creation of these areas, prior to the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC), was represented by "islands" reserved for scientific and recreational purposes, in which man and nature were separated. Already through the SNUC, current model, there are two groups of management category that serve different objectives, namely, integral protection unit and sustainable use unit. The units of integral protection aim at the preservation of nature, not allowing the direct use of natural resources, and the units of conservation of sustainable use, in turn, allow the direct use of natural resources, provided that in a sustainable and within the expected limits of environmental resources. However, in Brazil, the creation of these areas is accompanied by several conflicts in territories that are occupied by traditional populations. In a mapping made by ICMBio, it was observed that 82 units present social conflicts of several categories (Prates & Sousa, 2014).
The TBC in this protected area, where the relevant themes are the environmental value of the mangrove and the social and economic dynamics of fishermen, can be strengthened by environmental interpretation tools. These instruments aim, through sensitization of the visitor through contact with nature, to construct a critical approach between education, society and the environment, leading them to understand the role of protected areas and the social dynamics that permeate the use of these spaces . Considering the context presented, this work has as main objective to support the participative elaboration of a field guide for the interpretation of the natural and cultural patrimony, that provides information to the visitors on subjects related to the local culture and the ecosystem of the mangrove. With this, it intends to improve the instruments to strengthen community-based initiatives in the Guapimirim APA. For this, the following specific objectives were defined: · To map, together with local subjects, the main themes of interest for the composition of the field guide, considering two main aspects: biodiversity (mangrove ecosystem and Guanabara Bay) and local culture (fishing dynamics, local customs and history) · Propose the content of the field guide together with the social subjects that act directly and indirectly in the tourism in APA Guapimirim.

  •

A multitude of chemicals are used for different functions in the offshore oil and gas exploration activities, enabling from well drilling to its maintenance. Well drilling activities generate large quantities of waste, such as fluids (muds) with chemical additives and cuttings, and the sea is the main environmental fate of these materials. Although there are guidelines in Brazil regulating the discharges of these activities, the country lacks a regulation for the assessment and control of industrial chemicals, including those used in the offshore industry. Many industrial chemicals can be hazardous, and some may have undisclosed ingredients and hazards, which would be a source of further uncertainty about the risks they pose to the environment and human health. With that in mind, chemical products for possible use by six operating companies in offshore well drilling activities that were publicly available on the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) website were collected and inventoried. The compositions and hazard classifications of 1,080 products supplied by 40 companies from the offshore industry supply chain were analyzed, allowing the identification of 325 unique compounds. Considering the various forms of undisclosed information and the need to know the extent of it, six categories were defined for information on chemical composition through analysis of the SDSs (adequate disclosure; incomplete disclosure; unreported relative quantities of ingredients; unspecific chemical identification; trade/industrial secrets; and complete lack of information on composition). Most of the products (744; ~ 69%) were distributed among the categories of inadequate information, with a significant part of these 744 products (35%) having unspecific chemical identification for at least one of its ingredients. Undisclosed information represents a bottleneck to the understanding of hazards, that may be undermined by other SDS omissions related to toxicological and ecotoxicological endpoints. Other mishaps to hazard communication derive from the lack of clarity of the hazard classification system used and absence of eco- and toxicological numerical data to support classification. Confidentiality and other forms of undisclosed information may compromise environmental and occupational health protection by impairing risk assessment approaches and causing uncertainty to the risks of chemicals to the environment and to occupational health and safety. Thus, insufficient chemical data and the existing regulatory gap in Brazil can minimize the efficiency of decision-making both for the downstream users (operators) to consciously choose products that are less harmful to the environment and human health and the public authority to evaluate chemical risk reduction measures.

  • The objective of the present work is to evaluate seed quality parameters as indicators of sustainability of the pink pepper extractivism (Schinus terebinthifolium Raddi) in the Ademar Moreira settlement, located in the municipality of São Pedro D'Aldeia - RJ. To do so, the following seed quality parameters were determined: examination of infested seeds (damaged by insects); purity analysis; determining the degree of moisture; volumetric weight, uniformity test (sieve retention) and weight of one thousand seeds. As is well known, poor management of seed collection and storage, as well as sanity, can lead to rapid deterioration and loss of seed quality, and consequently hamper a better yield, with loss of market value. The results obtained from the analyzes indicate that, in general, the seeds marketed in the settlement do not present good physical quality, due to the absence of good practices of seed processing in the production chain, such as inadequate storage; and lack of knowledge about the best period for seed collection. Thus, in order to increase the quality and consequently the sustainability of the production, the farmers are recommended to adopt good practices of management and beneficiation of the seeds.

  • Although Conventional Agriculture, with the use of chemical pesticides, has contributed to the so-called Green Revolution, allowing food access to billions of people, has led to health problems and environmental imbalances. Large-scale food production was used through monoculture using machines, excessive extraction of natural resources, industrial inputs, fertilizers and chemical pesticides to increase production. Over time, especially after 1950, such practice has caused many socio-environmental problems. As a way of responding to the problems caused by conventional agriculture, agroecological practice emerges, serving as the basis for organic agriculture, aiming at the permanence of families in the field, conservation of natural resources, valorization of local knowledge and, consequently, generation of income. It should be noted that prior to the advent of fertilizers and chemical pesticides, Agroecology was already practiced, although there was no such nomenclature. The literature mentions that, even with the growth of organic production in recent years, farmers still face a series of problems, especially those related to Business Management, specifically those of Administration or Production Management. Managing or Managing an Agricultural Production, in addition to agronomic aspects, including organic certification of production, also involves administrative functions of planning, organization, direction and control related to: Production, Quality, Finance, Administrative Procedures, Human Resources, Materials and Environmental Management. This applied, qualitative, descriptive and bibliographical research will seek answers to the following question: Is it feasible to use the Production Administration in Organic Agriculture? To this end, technical visits were made to organic producers duly certified and registered in the National Register of Organic Producers, located in the municipalities of Três Rios and Paraíba do Sul. The municipalities are located in the central-south of the state of Rio de Janeiro. In addition, interviews were conducted with organic producers who commercialize the products in the organic fairs of the Botafogo, Glória, Leblon, Recreio and Olaria neighborhoods, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The objective of this work is to characterize the organic cultivation of food and its difficulties, mainly in relation to the factors related to the Administration of Production and the sale of the products. It is hoped that, in this way, the farmers of the regions mentioned will be able to replicate the concepts of the Administration of Production in their crops so that they can produce more and better, avoiding the wastes, with less impact to the environment, consequently, to have greater access to the consumer market and increased income.

  • Impacts on water resources must be reduced to maintain current and future livelihoods. Understanding the dynamics of hydrometeorological extremes is essential for water resources management. The influence of precipitation and flow extremes in the headwaters of the Paraíba do Sul River Basin and their relationship with the modes of climate variability were evaluated. Characterizing extremes through standardized indices seeking to analyze their dynamics and evaluate their relationship with climate variability modes. In the region there are three reservoirs (Paraibuna, Santa Branca and Jaguari) mainly used for power generation, supply and flood control. Precipitation and flow series were used between January / 1972 and December / 2016. Seven meteorological stations were used that went through the quality treatment and fault filling and three natural flow measurement points. For the precipitation anomaly calculation, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used and for the flow anomaly the analogous Streamflow Drought Index (SDI). The indices were calculated on the scales of 3, 6 and 12 months to evaluate the hydrological years, semesters and dry and wet quarters. The series underwent statistical tests that allowed the performance of the trend analysis. Correlation between SPI and SDI was performed for the three time scales. Climatic indices of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (ODP), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Atlantic TSM Interhemispheric Gradient (GITA) modes of climate variability were analyzed. Harmonic and spectral analysis were also performed. SPI analyzes characterized 79 anomalies, being 39 dry and 40 wet years and SDI presented 37 anomalies, 15 dry and 22 wet. There were no trends in the series. Correlation analyzes showed a large correlation in most cases tested on all scales except the 3-month dry season scale. The observational analysis of the series showed that 11 years stood out and how much the anomalies. The series can be divided between 1972 to 1993 and 1994 to 2016. The first half presented years with predominance of positive anomaly in the dry and dry seasons and the second half years there was a reversal with negative anomalies in the humid and rainy seasons. The first harmonic between 11 and 22 years for decadal scale and may be related to ODP and GITA. The second and third harmonics between 2 and 7 years for interannual scale may be related to the ENSO phenomenon. It was possible to observe the occurrence of climatic extremes and characterize their frequency. Cycles between three and six years were observed for the occurrence of climatic extremes. There was a relationship between the frequency of precipitation and flow extremes, however the intensity cannot be observed with the same clarity. Progress is needed in improving data series for the region's weather stations. The study aimed to contribute to the transition from traditional management systems to systems aligned with the desired sustainable development model.

  • The changes in extreme climatic and climatic events have been observed since the last decade, highlighting the extreme events of precipitation, referring to increasing the frequency and magnitude of these events. Due to the increase in impacts, the studies related to this theme are extremely important, especially for large cities such as Rio de Janeiro, which has records of impacts through extremes of precipitation. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify changes in precipitation distribution in the city of rio de janeiro and identification of extreme events. For this purpose, daily rainfall data were selected from a set of 15 meteorological stations, spatially distributed in the city of Rio de Janeiro-RJ, with the identification of 10 indexes related to climate change that advocate this change. Subsequently, these indices were submitted to statistical analysis of linear regression to identify the trend or not of the data. The annual precipitation totals were also submitted to Pettitt's statistical analysis to indicate periods of change in the variability of this variable over the years. The results showed that there is a tendency similar to the periods of occurrence of the child's events and that these tendencies were not relatively significant so that we can correlate them to, for example, climatic changes

  • The green roofs present several environmental, social and economic benefits, and can contribute to the sustainable development of the cities, mainly, opposing the accelerated urban growth with the insertion of vegetated areas among the buildings. Among the main benefits of green roofs are the reduction of micro-climate temperature, reduction of atmospheric pollution, increase in the useful life of the roof structure, reduction of surface runoff and increase in soil infiltration, increase of biodiversity, still allows production of food, acts as soundproofing of the building and has positive effects on the quality of life of the local population. In order for society to enjoy these benefits, it is essential to value the advantages of green roofing and consider a recommended technique in civil construction, encouraged by national public policies. In this context, the Federal Universities of Higher Education (UFES) can be used as great regional catalysts for the dissemination of technology and inducers of the use by the population. The general objective of this work is to map the implantation of green roofs in Brazilian federal universities. In addition, Brazilian public policies regarding green roofs will be identified verifying the alignment of these to the Sustainable Development Objectives and the Nationally Determined Contributions. For this, a study of the legislation and revision of bibliographies recognized in the subject will be carried out, as well as research on the goals to be reached for the sustainable development of cities in Brazil. Secondly, based on this information and answers from the Federal Universities of Higher Education (UFES) to the questionnaire prepared by the author, it will be possible to analyze the influence of public policies on the implementation of green roofs in UFES. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, it is expected that the public management will be more aware of the need and importance of public policies to promote the implementation of green roofs in Brazil with a view to sustainable developmen

  • The research verified the scenario of fiscal incentives for the use of agrochemicals in the agricultural production process to estimate the tax relief on such inputs, which shows an important instrument of environmental regulation of the market used in reverse, since instead of mitigating the negative externality generated by the use of pesticides to stimulate it. Based on data from the 2006 agricultural census, it was possible to verify expenditure by state and estimate ICMS tax waiver in that year, which was 2,925 billion reais in 2018 figures. In addition, the import history of these harmful health information was consulted in Secex's foreign trade information system in order to measure tax relief in these operations. In order to understand the normative framework that regulates the relationship between taxes and pesticides, a study on the tax laws of the 27 units of the federation and the Union was carried out in order to systematize the tax rates, calculation bases, tax contingencies and tax benefits granted in the scope of state and federal tax jurisdiction. In this way, it was possible to develop a practical methodology to verify a portion of the tax exemption on pesticides. The results were systematized in tables by tax exemption and type of operation. Thus, the waiver of ICMS, a state tax, was analyzed in the import operations in 2006 at 2018 prices, in scenarios, based on the combination of Secex data with the agricultural census data. The federal taxes studied were Import Tax, PIS / PASEP and COFINS, and the waiver calculated on the importation of social contributions was in the period from 2004 to 2018, since these were passed on in this type of operation in 2004, and in total operations in 2006, in the same way as ICMS. In the case of II, the tax relief was calculated based on Letec in the period 2007 to 2018. The discussions of the results are comparative with the budget allocations of the union budget units and with deficits of some states. Finally, a scenario of environmental regulation and fiscal adjustment of federated entities is discussed and simulated by means of projections of IPI rates, according to the fiscal policy adopted for the regulation of tobacco, which used a progressive tax according to the degree associated with the product. In this way, it is proposed to reestablish the extra-fiscal function of taxes on imports and industrialized products, in order to mitigate the negative externalities caused by pesticides and at the same time contribute to the financial health of the State.

  • The process of development of society has brought sociocultural changes, affecting the perception of the environment by humans, who came to see it as an object of use to meet their wishes, extrapolating the limits of the use of natural resources. Faced with this scenario, this research sought to transform this perception through a didactic proposal with socio-scientific generating themes as an instrument of natural conservation. The research was carried out in two public schools in the municipalities of Piraí and Barra de Piraí, in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro, with the 7th grade classes. Data collection instruments were: Analysis and survey of bibliographic material, questionnaires and application of practical and dissertative activities. The research had a qualitative and quantitative character, where in the qualitative approach the content and discourse analysis was performed, and in the quantitative part the frequency of occurrence of the significant elements was realized. The application of the socio-scientific thematic approach “Forest Seeds” was based on the Freirian methodology of the three pedagogical moments: Initial problematization, knowledge organization and knowledge application, together with the articulation of the curricular contents among themselves and the acquired knowledge. of the students' experience. The field activities were carried out from May to July 2018. The results showed that in the participating classes the environmental perception regarding the natural conservation was observed as expected. Therefore, given the crisis in the scenario of natural conservation and its resources, the emergence of a more critical, transformative and emancipatory education focused on local actions of global nature is evident.

  • Considered as the last frontier of expansion, reservoir of land and natural resources, the Brazilian Amazon arouses interest due to its potential. Therefore, its biodiversity and abundant natural resources are some of the main reasons of interest for projects in the area of international development cooperation in the region. Beginning in the 1990s, the most robust financial support from international institutions began through national governments, non-governmental organizations or the private sector for projects related to sustainable development. The Amazon region receives a large amount of international funding for project development and activities that are largely carried out with local partners. Founded in 1998, the Tapajós-Arapiuns extractive reserve, located in the state of Pará, has activities supported by international funding, developing partnerships such as the “Health and Joy Project”. It is noteworthy that projects and activities that address the sustainable use of natural resources in the communities of the Tapajós-Arapiuns Reserve have gained prominence in recent years. From this perspective, this research aimed to deepen the understanding of the development of sustainable use of natural resources, through international cooperation projects, in communities in the Tapajós-Arapiuns extractive reserve. To this end, a series of interviews and data collection will be made with the actors involved in the process about these activities for qualitative and quantitative treatment. The data collected allowed the development of indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of international cooperation in the sustainable use of natural resources. For the resources of international cooperation to be strategically used in order to generate positive results, effective monitoring of the effects and evolution of these projects is necessary.

  • The dominant globalized food system, produced in the green revolution models, supported by the market economy and the food industry, produces cheap and large-scale food, however, this price is based only on economic costs, without considering social and environmental costs. Despite producing enough food, it does not reach the announced goal of ending hunger. According to the FAO (2018), eleven percent of the world's population is hungry, one third of women of reproductive age have anemia, and one in four children under five are malnourished and subject to cognitive impairment and low immunity. The industrialization of agriculture, using large estates and monocultures intercropped with pesticides, aggravates social and environmental problems.

In the search for models that support the construction of alternatives to the dominant food system, this paper presents, through participatory research, the articulation, construction and operation of a CSA - Community Supported Agriculture, between chefs and agroecological farmers. , mediated by the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and professional management, in order to verify if it can be built and, if built, what are its social, environmental and economic impacts.

At this CSA, the chefs funded and took the financial risks of a productive survey of eight little-known tomato varieties from the UFRRJ germplasm bank, produced by three technically-assisted families of agroecological farmers from Seropédica. The project was designed and managed in partnership with the university, farmers and chefs, with an open cost spreadsheet and participatory management conducted by the researcher and her partner.

The survey lasted nineteen months, from the first CSA meeting to the perception of its social, environmental and economic impacts. The interaction and exchanges were intense, fifteen meetings attended by Seropédica planning and monitoring with farmers and technical assistance, presentations of the project for chefs engagement, four integration visits with all participants in the properties and restaurant, periodic reports of production and finances. , added to semi-structured interviews at the beginning and after project closure.

In addition to the participants' experience and perception, the project achieved visibility and impact in several qualified opinion spaces, fruits that are continuously being reaped. There were four articles on websites, ten lectures and participation in a book.

Research indicates that this CSA has horizontalized the relationship between different actors in the food system and has released narratives in favor of agroecology. And, to the extent of its size, it has promoted social, economic and environmental impacts. It financed and mitigated the risks of family farmers' production, provided technical assistance, gave visibility to agroecological agriculture, fostered income distribution and agroecology research, increased food biodiversity, and developed higher value-added products for family agriculture. However, it indicates that the project needs larger scale to generate economic comfort for all parties.

  • The Environmental Protection Area of the São João River Basin / Mico-Leão-Dourado is a federal conservation unit for sustainable use created in 2002, in the region of the São João River Valley, state of Rio de Janeiro. It was created to protect and conserve water resources and local forest remnants, in addition to ensuring the rational use of its natural resources. The APA São João region suffers from the intense process of habitat fragmentation, as a result of the successive economic cycles of exploitation of the natural resources present there, as well as the history of occupation of its territory, following the pattern of the biome in which it is inserted - Atlantic forest. In this context, the main objective of this work was to analyze the forest fragmentation and the landscape structure of the APA São João, through the mapping of the forest fragments of the conservation unit, to analyze the landscape structure before and after the creation of the UC and to quantify the landscape fragmentation by means of landscape metrics (area, density and size, shape and edge indices). For that, maps of the forest cover of different periods, from the years 2000 and 2011 were used. The metrics of the landscape were processed in the Patch Analyst plugin of the ArcGis software for both periods and the values generated for all fragments and by size class. (small, medium, large and very large). The total area of forest remnants increased in the period, a positive indicator for the management of the APA. Most of the mapped fragments were small; few fragments were very large. There was a reduction in the number of remnants in the period, and in particular of small fragments. The average size of the fragment increased in the period, reflecting the dynamics between the metrics of area and number of fragments, mainly in the class of small fragments, where there was a reduction in the number and an increase in the average size. Regarding the amount of edge, the results reveal a lesser edge effect in the large and medium fragments. And finally, the shape index indicated that the regular shaped fragments were small, followed by medium, large and very large fragments.

  • In the state of Rio de Janeiro, two years after the enactment of the Federal Law, the State Water Resources Policy was created, starting from Law No. 3,239, of August 2, 1999. The state law follows the guidelines of the national, which defines the river basin as the territorial unit for the implementation of water resources management and the river basin committees as the collegiate responsible for its management. This research is a case study, which focuses on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the social participation of water resources management in the Guanabara Bay Hydrographic Region, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Such investigation is justified because this hydrographic region has great environmental and economic relevance for the state of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, being a region with deep socioeconomic contrasts identified from the development heterogeneity of the municipalities that compose it. Its contributing basin drains both densely populated areas, whose municipalities lack sanitation infrastructure and solid waste collection, as well as more preserved areas. It is also a region that overlaps the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. In this context, the Guanabara Bay Hydrographic Region Management Committee and Maricá and Jacarepaguá Lagoon Complexes need to have civil society representatives in their structure who can play the role of arguing, planning and managing the multiple uses of water in favor of community from six subcommittees, namely: East, West, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Jacarepaguá, Itaipu-Piratininga and Maricá-Guarapina. The key questions in this research are: How is social participation taking place in the management of water resources in Brazil? What social participation are we talking about? Who are the social actors active in management? Do they really represent civil society in water management? What are the challenges your participation? Through the applied methodological strategies it was possible to identify: the little or no articulation between the members of the Central Committee (CBH-BG) and those of the subcommittees; little knowledge about internal management processes; difficulties in feeling belonging to the management process of Guanabara Bay; little identification about the importance of the institution it represents for decision making; and the need to externalize conflicts of interest between the social management actors.

  • This research has an interdisciplinary perspective and, as the subject, the process of professional qualification about the environment. This way, it merges two significant areas of knowledge: education, with a strong focus on environmental education, and journalism theories, connecting with the concept of environmental journalism. We understand it is crucial to study the process and products of journalistic vehicles, as much as to reflect on the professional qualification which operates at the press. It is possible to contribute to the discussion about sustainable development, bringing new perspectives about covering to our society. The research relevance it is significant, considering that environment journalism still needs studies. An example of this requirement in this field is that the first discipline about environment journalism was created in 2004, and we present bibliography references, which proves, with numbers, the weak dedication in research at this subject. Our interest is encouraging the reflection about the concept of sustainable development, beyond the contributions of environment education, and environmental journalism, to the journalist’s process of professional qualification, considering that some possible interference in his working routine could be a result of this pedagogical construction. It is essential to highlight that this professional is part of the news construction and our reality, so he is also part of the construction of the idea of sustainable development. We have studied the curricular program of three bachelors of journalism, in the city of Rio de Janeiro: Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) e Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). This process occurs by the analyses of keywords associated with environmental themes, with the objective of uncovering in which disciplines mandatorily it is approached. Beyond this examine, we decided to interview two professionals who graduated at each one of these institutions, using a quality method.

  • Container handling in Brazil is the third largest activity in the maritime transport sector, corresponding to 100 million tons in 2016. Due to its economic importance, several researches and publications address the issue of terminal efficiency, but do not take into account aspects and environmental impacts. In this sense, the objectives of this work are: to evaluate carbon emissions from the main Brazilian container terminals, to verify if there are greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management initiatives and to propose actions mitigating these emissions. For this, first, a survey of information on container terminals in Brazil was carried out in order to know its characteristics in terms of cargo handling and, consequently, the outlook at the national level was outlined. For the calculation of GHG emissions, the methodology proposed by the GHG Protocol will be used. At the end of this research, it is expected to obtain the carbon emissions assessment of the main Brazilian container terminals, the analysis of the performance indicators (handling / GHG) of each terminal, the carbon emissions management initiatives scenario and the proposal mitigation actions.

  • The deepening of the environmental crisis, together with the reflection on the influence of the consumer society in this process, brings up several debates related to the generation of solid waste and the need to rethink more socio-environmentally sustainable production and consumption models. We need to rethink the current economic model based on a linear model of raw material extraction, production, consumption and disposal. In addition to avoiding the negative impacts of improper disposal of waste on the environment and waste, the new paradigm proposed in a circular economic model would increase resource efficiency, extend the packaging life cycle and reduce disposal. In the last decades, the use of plastic has allowed several advances for the current society in the construction, automobile, hospital, food sectors. However, due to the inadequate disposal, especially of post-consumer plastic packaging and its effects on various ecosystems, this material has constantly taken a leading role in the discussions. Although most packages have a short life cycle (up to one year), they can last for centuries in the environment generating direct and indirect impacts on land and sea life when fragmented into microplastics. In coastal cities such as Rio de Janeiro, this problem can still economically affect fishing and tourism sectors. About to turn ten, the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) has not yet been able to close dumps, and landfill recyclable waste is still a common practice in most Brazilian cities, although they are designed to receive waste. According to PNRS, reinserting them into the production chain through reverse logistics requires the attention and engagement of each actor involved in shared responsibility. To this end, sectoral agreements must be incorporated and supported by the government, industries, companies and businesses and can reduce the amount of material that reaches landfills and is disposed of improperly. As a result, opportunities are created for the recycling chain, and new business models based on the reuse of plastic packaging. In this sense, the research provides subsidies for a systemic understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved to combat the problem of inadequate disposal of this material in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The development in research and innovation, and the engagement of the population on new ways to consume and selectively dispose of recyclable waste are also fundamental factors for the success of valorization of this material in the pre and post-consumption stages, bringing economic, environmental and social gains. It can be observed that the collaborative look of the circular economy linked to the environmental management instruments present in the National Solid Waste Policy bring opportunities to rethink new business models and articulate the links involved in the plastic packaging life cycle in the city.

  • National Parks are protected areas where only the indirect use of natural assets is allowed. The presence of these parks in areas where communities live can generate conflicting situations that directly interfere in the achievement of the objectives of these areas, being a great challenge for those responsible for their management. National Parks of the two most megadiverse countries of the world, Brazil and Colombia, were studied in order to analyze the management strategies, in order to know, from the perspective of the managers, the effectiveness of social and environmental management strategies towards the local communities of the National Parks of Brazil and Colombia. For the sample, five national parks were selected in each country. The methodology adopted was the Rapid Assessment and Prioritization of Management of Conservation Units (RAPPAM), developed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), from which a module and a further socio-environmental questionnaire. Brazil obtained a general management effectiveness index of 63% and Colombia 66%, both of which were classified as high management effectiveness. In the module of socioeconomic importance the two countries were classified with high effectiveness, Colombia scored 70% while Brazil 69%, while in the socio-environmental module Brazil obtained 61%, a high management effectiveness index, and Colombia was 51% , considered median index. 90% of the module of socioeconomic importance was considered as a strength for the management of the two countries, while in the module of social and environmental importance, 80% of the points are considered strong for Brazil and for Colombia only 60%. Unresolved disputes with regard to land tenure or right of use are the only weak point that occurs simultaneously in both countries, and can be found in 80% of the parks.

  • Rapid, unplanned urban development leads to inefficiencies in the functioning of basic infrastructure and services in some communities throughout the city. The drugtraffickingstricken, closed community of Parada de Lucas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil does not boast a fully functional sewage system and its solid waste is not disposed of properly. Commingled piles of trash in the street are not a rare sight. Such practices are believed to be linked not simply to a lack of public intervention, but also to low prospects of transformation of the environment that surrounds the community members. This project seeks to expose the environmental issues present through two instruments: the first is a quantitative assessment on the environmental perception of the community members obtained through one-on-one surveys such that the confidence level be equal to 95% and the error to 5%; the second is a qualitative report based on the author's observations during the two-year stay in the community. During this time, a research-action also takes place in the form of environmental education classes to children between the ages of 8 and 14, as well as the facilitation of the formation of an ewaste cooperative. The former places priority on influencing the younger generation to better discarding practices through in-classroom activities and visits to nearby processing plants and landfills, while the latter attempts to harness the existing scavenging culture and combine it with electroelectronic waste, a much more valuable material than plastic, metal or paper alone that has been demonstrated to generate income for cooperative members, instill a culture of re-use of electronics, provide second-hand, more affordable electronics to the product chain and lower the amount of solid waste that would otherwise enter landfills. The project is expected to yield an insight into the reality of a closed community far from the financial center of Rio de Janeiro and its direct involvement in improving Parada de Lucas.

  • Landscape is a material expression of the interaction between man and the environment. The relationship between man and the landscape occurs from its emergence as a species. In many places throughout the tropics, small landowners do not completely clear the forests, leaving small patches of vegetation in unsuitable places for cultivation, corridors along the rivers and steep terrain and lonely trees. These remaining trees allow the viability of animal and plant populations in fragmented areas, as well as acting as focus of diversity. The first chapter of this work had as objective to analyze the transformations of the landscape over time; the popular knowledge and the perception of isolated trees and epiphytes. Qualitative interviews were carried out through the methodology of the oral history of life with residents of areas adjacent to the pastures. The interview script was divided into three thematic axes: the landscape; the remaining trees in the pastures; the epiphytes. The life stories of the interviewees have as a common aspect the work: as a need for survival and livelihood, as a point of attachment to the locality and rural activities. Work is also the transforming element of the landscape throughout the various economic cycles that have affected the region. The conversion of part of the area into a Conservation Unit occurs after the decay of agricultural production in the region, and subsequent rural exodus. Reforestation, and conservation of forest areas and water resources are well regarded by most residents. However, the need to reconcile conservation and agriculture appears in some narratives. Residents expressed empirical knowledge about fruit dispersal, seed germination and ecology of tree and epiphytes species. Only ornamental use was cited for the epiphytes. The remaining trees in the pastures represent semiophores, that is, they materialize the region's extractive and agricultural past. The second chapter had as objective to analyze the conservation and the structure of the epiphytic community in remaining trees in pastures. A total of 30 isolated forophytes, DBH> 5 cm, were sampled in pastures with a total area of 40.2 ha. Data on floristic, ecological classification, dispersion, pollination, conservation status of species, phytosociological indexes and vertical distribution of the epiphyte community were sampled, systematized and analyzed. A total of 69 species of vascular epiphytes were recorded, the families Bromeliaceae, Polypodiaceae and Orchidaceae were the most representative. The genus with the highest number of species was Tillandsia, followed by Ficus and Pleopeltis. The most representative ecological category was that of true epiphytes and only one species was characterized as hemiparasite. Most species are pollinated by animals, with entomophilia being the main pollination syndrome. The main dispersion syndrome of the epiphytic species sampled was zoocory. None of the species sampled is categorized under any threat of extinction threat, most species are reported as non-assessed. The study was developed in pastures in the area of Guapiaçu River basin, Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, Brazil.

  • The lack of an institutional document that guides environmental education actions, currently dispersed geographically and possibly conceptually distinct, in the Regional Departments of Sesc throughout Brazil is a gap that, when completed, will converge efforts towards a clearer, more objective, cohesive and effective educational action. In this sense, this research project aims to contribute to the promotion of environmental education, in an interprogrammatic way (education, health, culture, leisure and assistance), encouraging the implementation of projects and the strengthening of environmental education   in Sesc, through the creation of a document orienting action and promoting the dissemination of environmental education   concepts, principles and guidelines. For this, the study is based on a participatory and dialogic construction methodology, considering, among other information, what are the main public policies related to the field of environmental education, as well as what the main institutional documents recommend, always from the perspective complementarity between the finalist areas (transversality). Thus, through the involvement of several stakeholders in the process and the analysis of internal and external benchmarks, we contributed significantly to align, intensify and qualify the educational actions with the socio-environmental theme in SESC, demonstrating the synergy between its finalistic areas, as a way of socio-environmental transformation, mainly in the territory in which the Sesc units are installed.

  • The objective of this research project is to analyze and investigate the construction, negotiation and maintenance of the meaning of the sustainability category in the sector responsible for UFRRJ institutional contracting. Regarding methodology, the present research, of a qualitative nature, is characterized as a case study that is guided by a sociological and anthropological relational view, which aims to understand the exotic in what is familiar, through the analysis of webs of meanings built by the social actors responsible for the hiring of the institution. The methodological resources used to carry out my research include fieldwork, participant observation, the use of semi-structured interviews and bibliographic research. Sustainability has become an urgent and imperative issue on the current agenda of both the private sector and the public. However, the understanding of this category is not clear or much less consensual. In the case of public administration, despite the existence of rules and regulations, in order to effectively implement sustainability, it is essential that the actors act in order to do so. Meanwhile at UFRRJ I have noticed an inexpressive amount of sustainable contracting. Thus, the way these social actors perceive, understand and understand social reality becomes a fundamental condition for the investigation of their uses of the category of sustainability. Therefore, through the possession of the map through which social actors classify, order and hierarchize social reality, we may have access to the logic employed in its construction. In this sense, it is urgent to investigate the framework in which the sustainability category is produced in the sector responsible for UFRRJ's institutional contracting.

  • In Brazil, the total waste collected in 2016 was 71.3 million tons, with the region accounting for more than 50% of this value. In the same year, about 87.2% of the countries of the Southeast region recorded some selective collection exercise. Indicators on support initiatives are not selected from punitive but important public policies in support of selective support policies for the implementation of environmental education projects, funding for structural and financial support for recycling cooperatives. , among others. Thus, support for recycling cooperatives, by governmental or private sector, is fundamental to an update of the country's recycling rates. Similarly, understanding municipal management, with its participatory interactions between recycling and resource management cooperatives, is fundamental to the selection process of selective activities, in order to make it increasingly sustainable. Mesquita / RJ is a selective domiciliary recycling of borne consumption in the municipal (ii) the structures of cooperatives of recycling of the region and the structures of participation between the cooperatives of recycling and the city of Mesquita / RJ do not fit the selective collection of the municipality. For that, a qualitative research was elaborated, exploratory and descriptive, using literary revision and primary data collection through clusters of topics. The study itself is relevant to fostering a discussion, not only in academia, but also - and especially - in public enterprise and cooperatives, and to be complemented and replicated in other regions.

  • The relationships between climate variability and human health, in addition to their magnitude, are explained by the uncertainties that surround them and their possible consequences not yet fully known. It is now expected that human health will be one of the areas that will suffer most from the effects of climate variability, which can be highlighted as direct effects (diseases and deaths caused by heat waves) or indirect effects (modification of ecosystem, biogeochemical cycles which allow the transmission of infectious diseases transmitted by vectors). In Brazil, arboviruses (mosquito-borne diseases) have a wide geographic distribution, with predominance in several regions, that offer adequate conditions for their proliferation. As populations created new relationships with environment, environmental imbalances were generated and new diseases were created, creating the need for studies that take into account the environment as a producer of health and disease processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ecoepidemiological impact of climate variability on human health in transmission of arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes, with emphasis on Zika Virus at Rio de Janeiro, Metropolitan Region I. To achieve this objective, it was necessary to collect vector and arboviruses data and climatic data in the studied region. Preliminary results point to a correlation between climatic variability, deforestation and the Zika virus epidemic. In addition, it was proved that the estimated causal association between climate variability and vector spreading allowed the ZKV epidemic; making effective actions of environmental health education in the general scope, such as in the school curriculum, the Worker's Health, the curriculum of the medical school to prepare doctors who diagnose tropical diseases.

  • The simulation of the terrestrial ecosystems processes through biosphere-atmosphere models,
which can be directly coupled to atmospheric numerical models, helps to achieve a more accurate
diagnosis and prognosis of weather and climate conditions. To make more realistic forecasts, calibrated
models are needed in areas of interest to better reflect the local interaction between biosphere
and atmosphere. Despite the extensive literature on the processes that occur in different
parts of the world, there is a growing movement to understand the dynamics of land use and coverage
in Brazil. Therefore, the present study aims to implement, calibrate and evaluate a radiative
transfer model based on the two-stream approximation from its resolution by finite differences
applied in sugarcane cultivation. The radiative transfer model was implemented in an open modeling
environment (Scilab) and solved using the Finite Differences Method: Euler method combined
with Shooting Method and compared to the data observed in the field. Its optimization (calibration)
was achieved using Reverse Modeling by the Luus-Jaakola method. Thereby, measurements
of solar radiation components above a sugarcane crop (cv RB 92579) were obtained in Rio
Largo, State of Alagoas, using a radiometer balance installed in a 6 m high micrometeorological
tower in the period from 02/17/2006 to 02/24/2006. In this period, the number of expanded leaves
and the determinations of leaf length and width, used to calculate the leaf area index (LAI), were
also measured. Since the proposed model requires data of solar radiation incident on the top of the
canopy discriminated in its direct and diffuse components, two empirical models (polynomial of
3º and logistic) that relate the transmissivity of the atmosphere and the fraction of diffuse radiation
in relation to global were previously tested. In the adjustment of these empirical models, hourly
measured global and diffuse solar radiation between 1997 and 1999 were used. The polynomial
of 3º model had greater precision and accuracy, expressed by the statistical indices: coefficient of
determination (r2); Willmott’s coefficient of agreement (d); root mean square of error, absolute
and percentage (RMSE); and mean square of error (MSE) and its systematic (MSEs) and nonsystematic
(MSEu) plots. The parameters used by the proposed two-stream model were optimized
towards the reflected solar radiation (𝑆↑) at the top of the canopy and it presented results consistent
with those reported in the literature. The test of the proposed model using the calibrated parameters
was evaluated by the same statistical indices used previously. The results obtained for 𝑆↑ at
the top of the canopy were accurate (d > 0.99 and RMSE < 3.6%) and precise (r² > 0.99). However,
the model underestimated 𝑆↑ earlier in the day, when the sun was below the zenith angle of 60°,
mostly around 7 am. This observation corroborated the analysis made for albedo results which
also had precision and accuracy within accepted models standards (r² > 0.73, d > 0.89 and RMSE
    < 6.5%).

  • Environmental education (EE) is one of the main processes for changing the relationship between populations and the environment. In Brazil, it was consolidated in the 1990s and has been applied in different approaches in schools and conservation units (CUs). In the Rio de Janeiro State, the municipality of São Gonçalo has more than one million inhabitants and one active CU: the Environmental Protection Area of Engenho Pequeno (APAEP, in Portuguese). After decades of disorderly population growth and lack of accurate public policies, the city has serious socio-environmental problems, such as lack of sanitation and of proper water supply. In this context, the APAEP has very low visitation rates, which are not even officially registered. The conservation has 13 square kilometers and no management plan, management council or educational projects. Therefore, the objective of this study is to discuss the use of environmental education as a strategy to engage school visitation and the participation of different social actors, including the population of the city, in the sustainable management of the APAEP. We also propose an educative material about the conservation unit and its educational practices to be used as a method of outreach in municipal public schools located nearby the CU’s headquarter. In order to accomplish that, an investigation were conducted to identify the EE practices in the municipal schools around the APAEP, the educational activities offered by the conservation unit and its main audiences were recorded, and the characteristics and the relationship between the most expressive social actors related to the management and sustainable use of the CU. The methods were field work for local recognition, semi-structured interviews and literature review. The theoretical basis of this work considered the concepts of critical environmental education, environmental education for biodiversity management, environmental advocacy, participative management, and decentralized governance of protected areas. As a result, we expect to engage the government of São Gonçalo city to work for the protection, management and governance of the APAEP focused on the sustainable development of the municipality and to encourage environmental education practice at the unit to be conducted as a initial step towards the construction of a participatory network for management and governance of the APAEP.
