  • This study aims to investigate the use of an industrial residue rich in silica and aluminum, generated during the production of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts, as a precursor in the synthesis of geopolymers. The research seeks to mitigate environmental impacts associated with both the inadequate dispôs al of industrial residues and the high energy consumption and CO₂ emissions related to Portland cement production. The methodology involves the physicochemical characterization of the residue using advanced analytical techniques, the definition of synthesis parameters for geopolymer production, the evaluation of paste rheology, and the determination of mechanical properties of the specimens. Preliminary results indicate that the residue has significant potential as a geopolymer precursor, mainly due to its high silica and aluminum content. Furthermore, processing tests demonstrated compatibility with the requirements, ensuring proper deposition and satisfactory early mechanical strength. Therefore, this study proposes an innovative route for industrial waste valorization while providing a sustainable alternative to conventional construction materials, aligned with circular economic principles and global decarbonization goals

  • This work aims to evaluate the feasibility of using glass microsphere waste, in combination with metakaolin, as precursor materials in the synthesis of geopolymers through alkaline activation processes, aiming at the formation of a geopolymer gel with potential for technological application. Metakaolin is adopted as a reference precursor, widely consolidated in the literature, while glass microspheres, used in different percentages in the formulations, are investigated as a partial or complementary alternative, due to their high silica (SiO₂) content and predominantly amorphous character.

The research is part of the search for sustainable alternatives to Portland cement, whose production is associated with high energy consumption and significant carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. In this scenario, geopolymers stand out as promising materials, especially when produced from industrial waste rich in aluminosilicates, contributing to the reduction of environmental impacts and the valorization of waste, in line with the principles of the circular economy. Methodologically, the study encompasses the compositional, structural, and morphological characterization of metakaolin and glass microsphere residue using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The research is developed within the framework of a Technical Cooperation Agreement between the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and the Brazilian Navy, ensuring the controlled supply of the residue and strengthening the integration between the university and the public-industrial sector.

  • The removal of natural resources and the increase in waste generation by the construction industry cause social and economic problems worldwide. This research seeks to investigate the feasibility of using ceramic construction waste (C&D) in the manufacture of pavers as a sustainable alternative for the industry. Through a comprehensive literature review, it was found that pavers produced with C&D can exhibit good compressive strength, low water absorption, good permeability, and adequate durability. The use of waste in concrete contributes to reducing the extraction of natural resources and reducing waste in landfills, demonstrating the potential of recycling C&DW, promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of construction. This study analyzes the impact of replacing conventional aggregates (sand and gravel) with construction waste (C&DW), maintaining the quantitative ratio (1:2:3) for cement, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate, and maintaining a constant water/cement ratio. The materials used will undergo pycnometry, granulometry, optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction tests to verify their properties, such as density, particle size, macrostructure, and crystalline phases, respectively. Four concrete mixes (T1 to T4) will be studied, following the specific standards for the manufacture of interlocking paving, based on ABNT NBR 9781: Concrete Paving Components – Specifications and Test Methods Preparation. The concrete prepared for forming the test specimens will have specific proportions, and characteristic compressive strength and water absorption tests will be performed. Additionally, a test will be conducted to verify the paver's permeability, as described in ABNT NBR 16416:2015 - Permeable concrete pavements — Requirements and procedures. The method determines the pavement's permeability coefficient by measuring the site's water infiltration capacity. This work is expected to identify the composition and process used to produce pavers using RCC with similar or superior quality to commercial products, thus contributing to the environmentally responsible construction sector.

  • Additive manufacturing, especially 3D printing by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), has emerged as a promising technology for the production of functional components due to its versatility, low cost, and ability to fabricate complex geometries. However, commercial polymer filaments present limitations regarding electrical conductivity, restricting their use in electrochemical applications. In this context, this work aims to develop and characterize conductive filaments based on PLA, castor oil, and graphite, synthesized through chemical and physical routes, targeting their application as 3D-printed electrodes for dopamine detection. For this purpose, the composites were prepared by solvent-based and thermo-shear mixing methods, subsequently extruded into 1.75 mm filaments, and processed in a 3D printer. The materials obtained were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analyses (TGA and DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and electrochemical tests by cyclic voltammetry. Preliminary results indicated that the filaments showed good dimensional uniformity, mechanical flexibility attributed to castor oil, and stable printing without fractures, in addition to adequate graphite dispersion in the polymeric matrix. As future steps, the evaluation of electrical properties and electrochemical performance of the electrodes will be deepened, especially in dopamine detection at different concentrations, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed formulation for sustainable and low-cost sensor applications.

  • Conductive composites are materials composed of an insulating Polymer matrix and conductive fillers, such as carbon black, carbon nanotubes, or graphene, which improve their electrical properties and have both civilian and military applications. This study aims to develop and characterize poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites containing carbon black (NF) for electromagnetic shielding applications. PVDF/NF composites were prepared with compositions of 90/10, 85/15, and 80/20 by microextruder at 230 °C. The speciments were then injection molded at the same temperature for characterization. According to the preliminary FT-IR results of the PVDF/NF blends, a reduction in the intensity of the band at 840 cm-1 was observed, indicating a decrease in the β- crystalline phase and lower structural organization of the polymer chains. Rheological analyses revealed that addition of carbon black increased the complex viscosity of the composites compared to pure PVDF, with all samples showing pseudoplastic behavior, characterized by a decrease in viscosity as the frequency increased. The micrographs showed that the composites containing 20% carbon black (NF) exhibited better particle dispersion and the formation of a conductive network within the PVDF matrix. In addition, the alternating current (AC) conductivity increased with carbon black, enhancing electrical conduction. Finally, the electromagnetic shielding tests indicated that the shielding efficiency increases with both the carbon black content and the material thickness, with the 80/20 PVDF/NF sample showing the best performance, reaching approximately -25 dB (1 mm) and -38 dB (3 mm). Preliminary results indicate that PVDF/NF composites are promising materials for electromagnetic shielding applications, with potential use in submarine coatings to reduce radar detection and in medical devices, such as pacemakers, to minimize electromagnetic.

  • The growing generation of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), estimated at 44 million tons in Brazil in 2023, represents a significant environmental challenge but also an opportunity for sustainability. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), this dissertation investigates the technical and environmental feasibility of producing cement-based boards with the incorporation of CDW. The research aims to contribute to reducing the sector's environmental impact, preserving natural resources, and promoting the circular economy. Although the civil construction sector is a global economic driver, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and job creation, it is also one of the largest generators of urban solid waste. In Brazil, despite the considerable installed capacity for CDW recycling, the effective production of recycled aggregates is consistently lower, indicating the need for optimization in the management and processing of these materials. The use of recycled aggregates in cementitious materials, while promising, presents challenges. The performance of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is often inferior to that of natural aggregate, which can result in lower mechanical strength, higher water absorption, and greater drying shrinkage in mortars and concretes.Given this scenario, this research proposes the fabrication of cement-based boards incorporating different contents of CDW. The methodology includes the characterization of the waste (chemical, physical, and micrographic analyses, such as X-ray Fluorescence, X-ray Diffraction, particle size analysis, specific gravity, void ratio, and moisture content), Portland cement type CPII, and natural sand. Mortar mixtures will be developed with 0%, 25%, and 75% substitution of conventional fine aggregate (sand) with CDW, adjusting the water/cement ratio to ensure workability. The produced cement-based boards will be subjected to fresh state tests, such as consistency index, and hardened state tests, such as compressive strength and permeability by capillarity. The expectation is to develop mortars using CDW in the composition to produce cement-based boards with characteristics similar or superior to commercial products. The project has a technological focus by developing an innovative and more sustainable product, providing data for its industrial production; an environmental focus, by reducing the amount of debris in landfills and decreasing the demand for virgin raw materials; and an economic focus, by potentially lowering production costs and fostering innovation in the construction industry. This study is expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of civil construction towards sustainability.
