SUMMARY:

The vegetables of the Brassicaceae family comprise species of great economic, social and nutritional relevance for humanity. They are demanding species in fertility and in mild to cold climatic conditions. Among these species, broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) stands out, whose production is concentrated in Brazil in the Southeast and South regions, with emphasis on higher altitude areas such as the Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro. Brassica production in these regions, as well as worldwide, has been limited by the occurrence of clubroot disease, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae. In view of this, strategies are needed to reduce these losses, as well as to generate increases in the production and quality of the vegetables produced. Poultry litter is the main organic compound used in brassica crops due to its high nutrient content and low cost. Its use, however, brings inconveniences such as the contribution of potentially toxic metals. Thus, one of the proposed strategies is its use in composted form and with the addition of biochar during the composting process. The present work has the general objective to evaluate the effect of fertilization at planting with poultry litter composted with different doses of biochar, on the occurrence of clubroot, growth of broccoli plants, production and quality of the inflorescences produced. For this, tests under conditions in a greenhouse are planned, involving inoculation with spores of P. brassicae, and field tests, both at UFRRJ. In the first test, in a greenhouse, the inoculation with P. brassicae and the use of poultry litter with different proportions of biochar (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%) will be tested under the occurrence of the disease and plant development under conditions of high pathogen inoculum potential. Then, two trials will be carried out in a greenhouse, evaluating the effects of the presence of the pathogen and different proportions of biochar in the poultry litter in two broccoli cultivars (Coliseu and Legacy) and median inoculum conditions. The best proportions selected will be tested in the field in different forms of application, traditional or pelleted, in order to investigate the effects on the growth and productivity of broccoli. The present work has as expected results the validation of the safe and efficient use of poultry litter with a view to reducing the losses caused by cruciferous hernia and increasing the growth of broccoli plants and the production of better quality inflorescences
