SUMMARY:

Tomato is one of the most produced vegetables in the world, presenting high added value. It is cultivated intensively, with high demands on cultural treatments, fertility and, commonly, agricultural pesticides. The intensified cultivation of the crop has favored the selection of resistant races of phytopathogens, such as Fusarium oxyporum f. sp. lycopersici and Ralstonia solanacearum, in addition to the possible presence of soil contaminants that contribute to fruit contamination, such as toxic metals. A strategy that has been advocated for reducing biotic and abiotic stresses in crops is grafting. Grafting consists of joining two plants, using a resistant rootstock and a productive scion. Therefore, the objectives of this work will be: a) select tomato rootstocks resistant to fusarium wilt; b) select rootstocks resistant to bacterial wilt; c) evaluate the compatibility between rootstocks and scion and effects on the complete crop cycle; d) evaluate the quality of the fruits produced and the dynamics of contamination by toxic metals. To select rootstocks resistant to wilt, resistance assessments will be carried out in tubes with 5 different rootstocks, in addition to a cultivar with a susceptibility pattern and another with resistance to both pathogens. For F. oxysporum, inoculation will be carried out with races 1, 2 and 3 with 5 x 106 micronidia mL-1, in addition to the control treatment with water and for R solanacearum, inoculation will be carried out with an isolate containing 5 x 106 CFU, in addition of the witness. The evaluation will be carried out 28 days after transplantation (DAT), analyzing the presence or absence of typical symptoms of the disease, assigning grades based on a rating scale. Subsequently, tests will be carried out to analyze the compatibility of the graft with the rootstocks and the commercial scion (Serato). The same rootstocks from the resistance tests and a self-grafted control will be used. The experimental design adopted will be randomized blocks with six treatments and four replications with 8 plants each. At 13 days after grafting, the seedlings' adherence will be assessed and they will be transferred to pots with a capacity of 3.6 L, in order to check their performance in soils infested or not with the respective pathogens. The evaluation will be carried out at 30 DAT, evaluating the plant's vegetative growth attributes and the presence or absence of the disease. After selecting the most promising rootstocks, full cycle trials will be carried out, evaluating the effect of grafting on plant development and the production and quality of tomato fruits. Furthermore, these plants will be resistant to pathogens until the end of the crop cycle. Thirdly, a trial will be carried out with the most promising rootstocks, evaluating the quality of the fruits produced and the dynamics of fruit contamination by toxic metals. As expected results, it is planned to identify promising materials for use in tomato grafting, aiming to reduce losses caused by fusarium wilt and bacterial wilt; recording the effects on plant development, production and quality of fruits produced, with emphasis on contamination by toxic metals. Furthermore, it is expected that a conclusion will be drawn on the economic viability of using the technique.
