Evaluation of a new way of desuckering in commercial banana productionMusa sp., desuckering, population density.
The management of clumps in banana crop (Musa sp.) is important to define the level of plant densities. In conventional systems with high technological standard, the so-called 'Mãe-Filha-Neta' is adopted. However, it has been observed that in the less-technology tillages, in the majority of the clumps, it is not possible to occur at the same time these three types of plants with different ages. Therefore, when it is adopted the technical recommendation of space between clumps, it ends up having a smaller number of individuals per area, which has negatively affected the productivity of the orchard. This work aimed to compare the clump management systems, named “Sempre 3” (let three plants per clump) with the conventional management in organic cultivation of 'Maçã' banana type 'BRS Princesa' in the third and fourth cycle. The experimental set up consisted of two treatments: (1) conventional management and (2) management of “Sempre 3”. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design (ICD), with eight plots or replicates, each consisting of thirty-six clumps, four clumps useful from the center of conventional management and four useful clumps from the center of “Sempre 3”. Each banana tree constituted an experimental unit. The experiment was set up with a population density of 2105 pl.ha-1 (2.5 x 1.90 m) and dimensions of 30 X 46 m. Monthly: number of plants per clump and number of shoots desuckered by clump. They were evaluated at harvest time: pseudostam height, pseudostam diameter, number of photosynthetically active leaves, length of third leaf, width of third leaf, leaf area estimation, total fruit weight, hand weight, number of fruits per bunch, number of hands per bunch, number of fruits per hand, average fruit weight, weight of second hand, number of fruits of second hand, average fruit weight of second hand, weight of trick, weight of rachis; cycle of production and production by area. The results of the vegetative and productive variables were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages were compared by the Tukey test. The phytotechnical descriptors were submitted to Pearson correlation. It was verified that the management “Sempre 3” presented a greater number of plants per clump and desuckered shoots, 2.73 and 0.58 respectively. In the fourth cycle there was no difference between the descriptors. Conventional management showed a higher gain in the mean weight of fruits (18.51%), weight of the second hand (21.1%) and average weight of the second hand (23.6%), all in the third cycle. The “Sempre 3” management presented a lower production cycle (-22.3%). Most of the descriptors showed a significant and positive correlation in the third (79.4%) and fourth cycle (99.3%). We can conclude that the proposed management presented a greater number of plants per clump, and did not differ in the vegetative characters and in the majority of the reproductive traits, however the reduction in the production cycle occurred, a factor that interferes with annual gain.
