SUMMARY:

Hops have high economic potential in Brazil due to their importance in the brewing industry, but they present high production costs. In this context, poultry litter emerges as an accessible alternative source of nutrients. However, the presence of heavy metals in this input represents a challenge to its safe and sustainable agricultural use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors that most contribute to the productivity of hops cultivated in mountain agriculture in a tropical region, and the efficiency of using an organic compound on the productivity and quality of plants and soil. The study was conducted at the experimental farm of the Grupo Petrópolis company, located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro (Teresópolis). Chapter 1 presents a preliminary study that consisted of characterizing four areas of the property, aiming to evaluate the influence of relief and the chemical and textural characteristics of the soil on productivity and heavy metal contamination in soils and plants. The topography, parent material, and management practices adopted on the property contributed to the enrichment of metals in the soil and their transfer and accumulation in the plants, and the factor that most favored the transfer of metals to the plants was soil acidity. For the development of chapters 2 and 3, an experiment was carried out on the property with the objective of evaluating the potential use of a compost (poultry litter + biochar) in the production of Humulus lupulus L. cv. Triple Pearl, and evaluating the transfer of metals in the soil-plant system. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design, with a 2 x 4 + 1 factorial arrangement, 4 replications, and 3 plants per plot, totaling 36 experimental units. The plants were subjected to doses (D) of the compound (D1: 1.5 kg and D2: 3.0 kg) on a dry matter basis, determined from the crop's nutritional demand (D2), together with proportions of biochar (0, 5, 10 and 15%), plus the control treatment (mineral fertilization). Chapter 2 presents the effects of the different management practices on soil chemistry, plant element extraction, productivity, and essential oil content. The different management systems influenced plant productivity, showing that there was no statistical difference in the production of dry mass of leaves, stems, and cones and the number of cones in the treatments that received D2 associated with 5% biochar, when compared to the treatment that received mineral fertilization. The D2+15%BC treatment favored the accumulation of secondary metabolites, enabling essential oil production from the cones without difference from the mineral treatment. Chapter 3 presents the influence of the different management practices on the enrichment and availability of heavy metals in the soil and plants, and their impact on productive efficiency. Biochar reduced the bioavailability of metals in the soil-plant system and, despite the increase of some elements in the soil, plant accumulation remained below risk levels. The D2 of the compost favored plant nutrition and element extraction. Specific photochemical alterations did not compromise productivity and, in some treatments, were associated with increased essential oil production. It is concluded that the use of composted poultry litter associated with biochar is a promising strategy for the sustainable cultivation of hops in tropical conditions, as it improves soil fertility, favors plant nutrition and productivity, increases essential oil production under specific conditions, and modulates the bioavailability of metals, without compromising the physiological performance of the crop.
