SUMMARY:

The reuse of agro-industrial residues represents a promising strategy to promote the sustainability of agricultural systems by reducing environmental impacts and adding value to by-products with agronomic potential. Among these residues, brewer's spent grain and hop crop residues generated by the brewing industry stand out, as their use as raw materials for composting may result in bioinputs capable of partially or completely replacing mineral fertilizers. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the agronomic potential and environmental safety of a bioinput produced by composting brewery agro-industrial residues (brewer's spent grain and hop crop residues mixed with eucalyptus sawdust) for the successive cultivation of vegetables. The composting process was carried out for 90 days under protected conditions, with monitoring of temperature, moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, total carbon and nitrogen, mineral nitrogen, bulk density, gaseous emissions, and the multielemental composition of the compost. Subsequently, greenhouse experiments were conducted using arugula (Eruca sativa Mill. cv. Donatella) and radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Saxa 220) over two successive cropping cycles. The experimental design consisted of a randomized complete block design in a 2 × 4 + 2 factorial arrangement, comprising two fertilization sources (brewer's spent grain and stabilized organic compost), four nitrogen application rates (50, 100, 150, and 200% of the crop nitrogen recommendation), in addition to an unfertilized control and a mineral fertilization treatment. Agronomic traits, photosynthetic performance assessed by chlorophyll a transient fluorescence (JIP-test), soil chemical properties, and plant nutritional status were evaluated. The composting process resulted in a stabilized organic compost with suitable characteristics for agricultural use. Both bioinputs promoted improvements in plant growth, biomass production, and the nutritional status of arugula and radish, while also contributing to the maintenance of soil fertility and photosynthetic efficiency. During the second cropping cycle, residual and cumulative effects of the organic fertilizers were observed, particularly for brewer's spent grain, which showed greater persistence in nutrient release and superior agronomic performance for several radish traits. Chemical analyses of both soil and plant tissues demonstrated no relevant accumulation of potentially toxic elements, indicating that the use of these bioinputs did not compromise the environmental safety of the production system under the evaluated conditions. It is concluded that brewery agro-industrial residues have considerable potential for the production of bioinputs intended for vegetable cultivation, representing a sustainable alternative for the valorization of these materials by improving soil fertility, enhancing crop development, and reducing dependence on mineral fertilizers, without evidence of contamination by potentially toxic elements in successive cropping systems.
