DEVELOPMENT OF PRE AND POST-HARVEST TECHNOLOGIES FOR MAINTENANCE OF QUALITY OF TOMATOES UNDER CULTIVATION IN THE TOMATEC PRODUCTION SYSTEM

Theme I - Organic agriculture has played an important role in generating employment and income for the farmer and in preserving the environment. Aim of this present work was to research on the system of production and commercialization of organic tomato in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The first organic fair in Brazil took place in 1984, in the mountain town of Nova Friburgo in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It was organized by the Association of Organic Farmers in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Its main objective was to contribute to the expansion of the organic movement in the country. However, the history of organic agriculture in the state of Rio de Janeiro is marked by times of expansion and retraction in the supply of organic products. At the moment of public policy development or the opening of distribution channels, markets signal an increase in demand, when the possibility of the new channels is exhausted by several factors, parts of these producers end up abandoning this production system. This cycle of expansion and contraction translates into the apparent stagnation or slow growth in the number of certified organic producers and the volumes of organic products produced in Rio de Janeiro. There is little information on demand growth, but there is an increase in the number of marketing channels, number of organic products offered (in natura or processed), the appearance of brands in supermarkets and the volume marketed by retail chains for supermarkets, restaurants, baskets in homes, collective sales and natural products stores.
Theme II - Tomato is one of the most widespread olive groves in the world, occupying a prominent place in the consumer's table. Several factors contribute to the tomato expressing its highest quality, exerting a strong influence on its conservation. In this way, this work sought to deepen the phytotechnical practices used in the tomato production chain, aiming at preserving and maintaining post-harvest quality of the fruits. The factors that affect tomato production are environmental and cultural. In the cultural factors are related to fertilization, soil management, spacing, irrigation, pruning, thinning and bagging of fruit. These aspects are important because they directly affect the qualitative characteristics of the fruit. These characteristics will influence the decision of the consumer at the time of purchase, because it prefers firm fruits, uniform color, without stains and wounds, and without residues of pesticides. The presence of deformities in the fruit implies its rejection at the time of purchase. Therefore, it is concluded that fruit quality can not be improved after harvest, but can be maintained. Therefore, it is important to know the pre-harvest factors in order to produce better quality fruits.
Theme III - The objective of this work was to perform a survey on the most common insect pests in the tomato crop in the state of Rio de Janeiro and its control measures in agroecological production. Although the scenario for tomato production seems favorable, the producer has faced great difficulties due to the attack of pests and diseases that make difficult the management of the crop. Therefore, the most commonly used control measure is the application of fungicide and insecticide, which leads to an increase in production costs, risk of contamination of the environment, applicators and residues in fruits. In response to problems arising from the indiscriminate and abusive use of pesticides, integrated pest management has emerged. This system is supposed to contribute effectively to the maintenance of natural enemies of pests in agroecosystems. It can be concluded that the agroecological production system is an adequate production strategy to produce high quality tomatoes without pesticide residues. In addition, it is environmentally safe, reduce the risk to the health of the farmer and offer to the final consumer fruits with higher quality.
