In pursuit for healthier and more sustainable lifestyles, a global population portion has undertaken changes in consumption habits, which explain why natural, functional and nutraceutical foods, grown in organic production systems, have been experiencing increasing demand. In Brazil, the vegetables are the highlight, being the most organic consumed product, driven by different markets such as fairs and fair trade groups. These markets channels, because of their peculiarities, can sensitize consumers and induce the demand for new food products, such as unconventional food plants (UFPs) that are gaining space in Brazilian research and media. Searching to contribute to the strengthening of organic production practiced by family farmers and to expand the knowledge about UFPs, this work aimed to determine the agroeconomic performance of a module of organic vegetables cultivation in the agricultural year 2017/2018 and, prospect among the spontaneous plants community of this area, which are suitable to human consumption. The studied area - Module of Organic Intensive Vegetables Cultivation, receives strictly vegetal origin fertilization, has 1 ha and is part of “Fazendinha Agroecológica Km 47”, located in Seropédica-RJ. The research tools were: a) monitoring inputs and outputs of entries, harvests and the production system work; b) study the soil seed bank composition through the emergence seedlings technique and c) analysis the emergent flora using the square-inventory method. The agroeconomic evaluation was based on the cost-benefit ratio, based on costs and prices of different commercialization scenarios. The data were submitted to univariate, multivariate, geostatistical and phytosociological statistical analysis. The system was monetarily feasible when the annual production (12.790 kg of food) was sold at weekly fairs in the Rio organic fairs circuit and in the institutional market of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE). In a conventional market scenario (CEASA-RJ), even when cost-benefit assumes a value greater than 1, considered profitable, monthly revenue is low, reinforcing the importance of consumer awareness, diversify marketing channels and social farmers organization as ways of ensuring fair prices. There is a need for more research about technological development entries and alternative management practices, with low costs, that can increase the vegetables producers’ profitability. A total of 10 spontaneous UFPs, corresponding to 31% of spontaneous total, were identified in the seed bank composition and in the emergent flora. Five species (Galinsoga quadriradiata Ruiz & Pav; Amaranthus deflexus L.; Oxalis latifolia Kunth; Galinsoga parviflora Cav.; and Laportea glandulosa [Wedd.] V.C. Lima) presented expressive densities, making them feasible to be included in the list of 26 economic interest vegetables of the Module. It is concluded that many spontaneous species found in the area can be promising sources of income and food security for farmers.
