SUMMARY:

Among the species of the genus Passiflora, the most common fruit is the yellow passion fruit, responsible for 90% of the national production. This is due to the quality of the fruit and the higher industrial yield. The competition for resources such as water, light and nutrients exerted by weeds in relation to commercial plants exploited by man is one of the main obstacles in agricultural production. The correct management of this factor is essential to obtain a production with quality standard of fruit in fruit trees. In the case of the passion fruit, due to its superficial root system, it is believed that it feels even more the effects of competition with weeds. Studies show that this fruit tree requires a large amount of water for its production and the competition for nutrients affects the formation and viability of flowers and can significantly reduce productivity. Due to these factors, this study aimed to evaluate the determining factors that influenced the growth of passion fruit when grown together with grass colonião (Panicum maximum) based on an experimental design with selective exclusion of competition for water and nutrients. The work was carried out in a greenhouse and standardized seedlings of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) were used. The experimental design was in a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement, the factors consisted of presence or absence of P. maximum, presence or absence of water limitation and presence or absence of nutrient limitation, resulting in 8 treatments. Soil moisture was monitored by periodic weighing of the pots and the amount of water added was different between treatments with and without water limitation. For treatments without water limitation, irrigation was carried out whenever the soil water content reached 60% of the field capacity, an amount sufficient to restore the humidity of each experimental unit to 80% of the field capacity. For treatments with water limitation, they were irrigated only when the plants showed the first signs of wilting, restoring field capacity to 50%. For nutrients, the recommended amount of fertilization (100% dose) was calculated according to the size of the pot used. Nutrient-limited treatment pots were fertilized with 25% of this recommended dose and those without limitation received 200% of the recommended amount. The objective of the 25% dose was to limit the amount of nutrients in the pot to promote competition for nutrients between P. maximum and passion fruit, while the objective of the 200% dose was to eliminate this competition.
