SUMMARY:

Despite the great socioeconomic importance of banana farming in Brazil, the activity still faces obstacles, such as seedling selection and pest control, including the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). There is also the use of banana plantation management practices that still do not allow for better plant development, particularly for the 'BRS Princesa' variety, which emerged as a good option for the 'Maçã' type banana market. The present work was carried out in a banana plantation of this variety, under organic cultivation, implemented in the Horticulture Sector of the Agronomy Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, in the municipality of Seropédica, RJ (Brazil), and the results were presented in two chapters. The Chapter I aimed to evaluate the effects of reducing the biomass of the “Chifrão” type seedlings, by cutting the pseudostem at four different heights, and by two systems of thinning the shoots of the clumps on the initial vegetative development of the plants and on the productivity in two harvests of 'BRS Princesa'. The design was in randomized blocks in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme, with five conditions of the biomass of the "Chifrão" seedlings [pseudo-stem cut off at 25, 50, 75 and 100 cm from the base of the rhizome and the control (pseudo-stem with all the leaves)] and three clump management systems [shoot thinning in the “Mãe-Filha-Neta” (MFN) system, shoot thinning in the “Dois Seguidores” (DS) system and control (no shoot thinning - SM)], which corresponded to the subplots. Different phytotechnical parameters of banana trees were evaluated during their initial development (from planting to 11 months of cultivation) and in their two harvests (2020 and 2021 harvests). In chapter II, we evaluated the effects of different types of pseudostem bait treated with the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassina for the biological control of the banana weevil in the edaphoclimatic conditions of Seropédica. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 3 x 2 x 3 factorial scheme, with three types of pseudostem bait of the banana tree 'BRS Princesa' [“queijo” (i.e., “cheese”), “telha sanduiche” (i.e., “tile sandwich”) and “pseudocaule na touceira” (i.e., “pseudo-stem in the clump”)], two microbial insecticides commercials (Beauveria Oligos® and Boveril®) and three evaluation periods (7, 14 and 21 days after the installation of the bait), with 30 repetitions per treatment, totaling 180 baits prepared at the time of harvesting the banana plantation. In each evaluation of the baits, the banana weevil adults captured in each type of bait were collected, counted and stored for 10 days, when the total mortality of adults and the number of dead adults with sporulation of the fungus were determined (confirmed mortality). The results obtained showed that the biomass of the aerial part of the “Chifrão” type seedling can be reduced by up to 50%, without causing negative effects on the initial development and production of the banana plantation of the 'BRS Princesa' variety, and both MFN or DS shoot thinning systems make it possible to obtain less time between harvests compared to control. As for the control of C. sordidus, the bait “pseudocaule na touceira” treated with Beauveria Oligos® was more efficient than the baits “queijo” and “telha sanduiche”, since it resulted in a greater number of adults killed and infected by B. bassiana.
