SUMMARY:

The Serrana Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, a large producer of brassicas, presents a pattern of vegetable production with intensive and sequenced cultivation of vegetables in small family units. Among the limitations most cited by producers are recurrent losses due to clubrot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae. It is a specific pathogen of the Brassicaceae family, biotrophic, but able to survive in the soil for several years. Among the factors that may be contributing to the perpetuation of the pathogen in the areas is the generalized distribution of turnip greens (Raphanus spp.) formerly used for green manuring in the region. Thus, the present project aims to: 1) Identify the species of plant referred to as turnip greens present in the region, its distribution and the incidence of plants with cruciferous hernia; 2) to evaluate the susceptibility and cycle of P. brassicae in these plants and its role as an intermediate host of the pathogen; 3) to evaluate its effect on the increase or reduction of pathogen inoculum and the severity of cruciferous hernia in cauliflower plants. For this purpose, collections and surveys will be made of the frequency and distribution of turnip plants in cauliflower production areas and the incidence of plants with galls. From the collected galls, studies will be carried out in a greenhouse to assess the viability and pathogenicity of spores of P. brassicae and the comparative susceptibility of turnip greens to the pathogen and its contribution to the perpetuation of the inoculum in the soil.
