SUMMARY:

According to agroecological principles, agroecosystems should favor plants with multiple uses that optimize biological processes. Fabaceae and Poaceae are recognized as plants for the production of phytomass, ground cover plants and green manures, but their potential as plants attractive to biological control agents (ACB) has been little explored. The attractive plants can provide shelter and/or food sources (e.g., pollen and nectar) for the CBA. Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) is a CBA native to Brazil, with larvae that prey on phytophagous arthropods and the adults feed on pollen and nectar, although the larvae can also be pollinivorous. The availability of flowers that provide these resources for C. externa should, therefore, play an important role in the conservation of this lacewing. However, not all flowers have a morphology that allows access by entomophagous insects to pollen, whose chemical composition can affect the biology of these insects. The assimilation of carbon from pollens by C. externa larvae has not yet been recorded. In this context, the general objectives of the study were (1) to evaluate the accessibility of pollens from Fabaceae and Poaceae to adults from flowers, (2) to evaluate the suitability of pollens accessed as food for adults and larvae of this lacewing and (3 ) to determine the carbon assimilation of the pollens by the larvae in comparison to the carnivore diet (prey). These evaluations were carried out in the laboratory and the results were presented in three chapters. In Chapter I, we evaluated the accessibility of pollens from four Fabaceae species [Cajanus cajan – pigeonpea (GU), Canavalia ensiformis – jack bean (FP), Crotalaria juncea – sunn hemp (CR), Flemingia macrophylla – flemingia ( FL)] and four species of Poaceae [Avena strigosa – black oat (AP), Pennisetum glaucum – millet (MT), Sorghum bicolor – sorghum (SO) and Zea mays – maize (MO)] to adults, when confined with flowers and whether there is selection among pollens based on the amount of pollen grains consumed and pollen characteristics (opening patterns, ornamentation and exine thickness, pollen size and crude protein content). Adults were able to access pollen in flowers of CR, FP and all Poaceae. It was also observed that, when confined with pollens extracted from anthers, adults consumed more MO, MT and SO pollens than CR and FP pollens, and the characteristics of the pollens did not govern this choice. In Chapter II, the effects of consumption of pollens of MO, MT, SO, CR and FP offered separately or in a mixture of a species of Poaceae with a species of Fabaceae on the biology of adults were evaluated in comparison with the standard diet (50% brewer's yeast: 50% honey), water and honey solution (50%). Diets with MO, MT, SO, CR and FP pollens, separately or in combination, improved the biological parameters of adults (longevity and male and female weight, pre-oviposition period, oviposition period, fecundity, fecundity rate and egg viability) similarly to the standard diet. The Chapter III aimed to evaluate the effects of diets of pollen from Fabaceae and Poaceae on the development of C. externa larvae, with or without prey, and to determine carbon assimilation from these diets. The results obtained showed that omnivory is a possible feeding habit in the carnivorous C. externa larvae, when in the absence of prey, and in this condition, the pollens of P. glaucum and Z. mays can guarantee the survival, growth and development of the three instars and of the pupa of this lacewing under laboratory conditions.
