SUMMARY:

Paclobutrazol (PBZ) is a synthetic compound used as a plant growth regulator, capable of shortening the internodes of plant stems. When managed correctly, PBZ is able to enable the insertion of crops such as Zinnia elegans Jacq., in the production chain of potted flowers. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses and forms of PBZ application on two zinnia cultivars (Red California Giant and Moonlight); propose a classification criterion for the production of potted zinnia treated with PBZ, based on the classification criteria for potted plants in general, proposed by the Veiling Holambra Cooperative; To evaluate the effect of early treatment of PBZ for seedlings of zinnia cultivars under different installments of the regulator. For this, two experiments were carried out in the Greenhouse of the Horticulture Sector, of the Department of Plant Science at the Institute of Agronomy of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (Seropédica – RJ). The first was in a completely randomized design (DIC), with plants treated with 6 doses of PBZ (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mg/L), applied by two different forms (drench or plug), in a 6x2 factorial arrangement and 8 replications. After the pinch, the weekly height accumulation (cm) was monitored. Upon reaching commercial maturity (35-50% of open flowers/vase), the following data were obtained: diameter of the main stem (mm), diameter of flower buds (mm), average diameter of the inflorescence (mm), number of leaves, stems/plants, nodes, inflorescence, lateral shoots, final height (cm), plant formation (cm), opening point (%) and ornamental quality (%). With the results, it was observed that the use of PBZ at a dose of 10 mg/L, via drench for cv. "Red California Giant" and in both forms of application for cv. "Moonlight" was to promote a greater reduction in the size of the plants, although this reduction was sufficient to result in harmonic pots of ornamental quality necessary for commercialization. With the standard and quality data, it was not possible to establish a quality criterion for potted zinnia. The second experiment consisted of evaluating the effects of seedlings treated early with a dose of 10mg/L of PBZ, under 5 different installments (without application (control); single dose; ½ dose; ⅓ de dose and ¼ de dose), starting the treatments 7 days after sowing (DAS), for the cultivars Red California Giant and Moonlight, maintaining the double factorial arrangement (5x2) in DIC, with 7 replications. 7 DAS started monitoring the weekly accumulation of height (mm), at 35º DAS the final height (mm), lateral projection of the plant (mm), diameter of the main stem (mm) and the number of leaves were surveyed. Although the T1 subdivision was promising for the reduction of the size of cv. "Red California Giant", and the T2 installment plan for cv. "Moonlight", it is necessary to conduct it until the end of the commercial cycle, to evaluate the impact of the different parcels on the ornamental quality of the vases.
