SUMMARY:

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is one of the main vegetables produced in Rio de Janeiro, especially in the Mountain Region, due to its favorable climate. Its production may be limited due to its high nutritional requirements, which is overcome by the large input of fertilizers. This large input of fertilizers can cause problems, especially when poultry litter is used without prior treatment. Poultry litter is the most used organic compound in the mountain region, due to its great gain in fertility, its prices and its ease of obtaining, originating from beef farms also in the mountain region. Using it while it is still fresh can cause adverse effects due to the contribution of toxic and potentially toxic metals. One of the proposed strategies for safely using this waste is composting with the addition of biochar. As few studies on this topic have been carried out, the present work aims to: a) Evaluate the effects of composted poultry litter in reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals in two broccoli cultivars under field conditions; b) Evaluate the phytotoxicity of poultry litter combined with biochar in different crops. To this end, two tests will be carried out under field conditions and one in a greenhouse. In the first field trial, the Coliseu® and Legacy® cultivars will be used with composted poultry litter and composted poultry litter with the addition of biochar, in addition to treatments with mineral fertilizer and the control, which will not receive any type of fertilizer. The second will take place in Nova Friburgo, using only Legacy®, also with the two composted poultry litter treatments, in addition to treatments with fresh poultry litter, biochar incorporated into the pit and the soil conditioner Vittia®. In the greenhouse test with seeds and seedlings of lettuce (Lactuca sativa), cucumber (Cucums sativus) and arugula (Euruca sativa) will
be used to evaluate the effects of phytotoxicity on these crops. At the end of the trials, it is expected that the combination of poultry litter and biochar will have positive results on fertility and food quality, in addition to reducing the accumulation of heavy and potentially toxic metals in fresh vegetables.
