SUMMARY:

In agricultural fields located in the high regions of Paraná State (PR), there is a growing number of failures to control cravorana (Ambrosia sp.) where glyphosate use is frequent. This study aimed to a) identify and characterize the anatomy of the aerial vegetative axis (leaves and stem) of Ambrosia sp.; b) evaluate the species' tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate and c) evaluate the effectiveness of Ambrosia control with pre- and post-emergent herbicides. The experiments were conducted at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro in Seropédica/RJ and in agricultural areas in the Ponta Grossa/PR and Guarapuava/PR. For identification and anatomical characterization, young and adult plants cultivated in pots were used. For the tolerance experiment, the percentage of control after application of glyphosate at doses of 1300 g a.e. ha-1 and 650 g a.e. ha-1, plus a control, was evaluated in 10 biotypes of the species. Two field experiments were conducted, both with a randomized block design, with four replications in a unifactorial scheme. In the pre-emergent herbicide trial, the treatments evaluated were, control, diclosulam 42 g.ha-1, imazethapyr 1000 g.ha-1, flumioxazin 100 g.ha-1, sulfentrazone+diuron 1400 g.ha-1, imazethapyr+flumioxazin 600 g.ha-1,  piroxasulfone+flumioxazin 250 g.ha-1, s-metolachlor 1500 g.ha-1, trifluralin 4000 g.ha-1. In the post-emergence herbicide assay, the treatments evaluated were glyphosate alone, associated with 2,4-D or halauxyfen+diclosulam, plus saflufenacil or carfentrazone, with sequential application of diquat or glufosinate (after 10 days), plus a control. Applications were made at two phenological stages (plants with up to 4 leaves and plants with more than 4 leaves). The variable evaluated was percentage of control, and the data were subjected to variance analysis (p≤0.05); if significant, the means will be compared using the Scott-Knott test at a 5% probability level. The leaves and stems high hairiness, as well as secretory structures, can be barriers to herbicides absorption and translocation. Significant morphological differences were observed between young and adult plants, indicating developmental adaptations that influence greater tolerance or susceptibility to herbicides. The developmental stage significantly influenced control, with dose of 1300 g a.e. ha-1 of glyphosate being the most effective. The 10 biotypes of Ambrosia artemisiifolia evaluated were more susceptible to glyphosate in the early stages. The most effective pre-emergent herbicides were mixtures with flumioxazin, flumioxazin alone,  and diclosulam. In post-emergence, for both plant sizes, treatments with halauxyfen+diclosulam had the best control, achieving 100% efficacy, whether applied alone with glyphosate or combined with contact herbicides.
