Development and evaluation of substrates for the production of vegetable seedlings in organic systems from urban solid waste

There are several initiatives for the use of these residues. A promising initiative is the use of composting. This process, in addition to eliminating the bad smell, makes the material biostabilized and free of biological contaminants. However, not all biostabilized organic compost has the physical and chemical characteristics necessary for the proper development of seedlings. Therefore, it is necessary to improve its characteristics in order to obtain moisture, aeration, electrical conductivity, pH and nutrient content in adequate conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to develop substrate formulations and evaluate their efficiency and quality in the production of seedlings. This will help to reduce the waste of nutrients, strengthen the organic production of vegetables, in addition to generating income and contributing to environmental preservation.

Assumptions
The use of biastabilized compost produced from organic solid residues such as: pruning remains, food residues and agro-industrial residues, allows the production of base substrate for the production of organic vegetable seedlings;
Improving the porosity of the substrates with the use of charcoal fines or biomass pellets contributes to improving the quality of the seedlings.
The enrichment of substrates with nutrients contributes to improving the quality of seedlings and increasing the productivity of vegetables in the field;

Goals
Characterize the compost produced from solid organic waste such as: pruning remains, food waste and agro-industrial residues with a view to formulating substrates for the production of vegetable seedlings and evaluating the effect of the compost on the substrate composition.
Evaluate the effect of adding charcoal fines or biomass pellets on the physical improvement of the substrate formulated from the previous compound;
Evaluate the effect of enriching the substrate with nutrients on seedling quality;
Evaluate the effect of seedlings produced in different substrates on the productivity of vegetables under field conditions.
