SUMMARY:

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is one of the oldest cultures known to man, native to Africa, where it was domesticated. The physiological characteristics presented by this crop, such as higher tolerance to drought and high temperatures, when compared to ordinary beans, allow its good adaptability to the arid and semiarid regions of the tropics, where legumes do not usually perform well. Due to their high protein content (19-25%), carbohydrates and minerals, cowpea plays an important role in human nutrition and in combating malnutrition, especially in semiarid regions, such as the Brazilian Northeast. The hypothesis of the present work is based on the question that the water deficit can reduce, in addition to productivity, the protein content in the grain of the cowpea fejão when submitted to drought, in its pre-flowering phase, which is the most sensitive to environmental stresses. The objective of this study is to evaluate the grain protein content of grain of four cowpea genotypes, with different degrees of drought tolerance, submitted to water deficit, comparing the physiological responses and protein content of four cowpea genotypes, studied before, EPACE 10, BRS Gurguéia, Paulistinha, and BRS Novaera. The study will be conducted in two experiments, in a greenhouse, in the Crop Science sector of the Department of Crop Science of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), in the municipality of Seropédica-RJ (22º45' south latitude and 43º41' longitude, located at an altitude of approximately 33 meters of sea level). The first experiment will be carried out with two contrasting genotypes, EPACE 10 and Novaera, for the study of the effect of drought on these cowpea genotypes. Next, the main experiment will be conducted, with the four proposed genotypes, using 10L pots with soil, using a completely randomized factorial design (RFD): 4 genotypes x 5 collections x 4 replications, totaling 80 pots. The seeds for planting will be inoculated with Bradyrhizobium sp strains. BRS 3262 (SEMIA 6464), obtained from the germplasm bank of EMBRAPA Agrobiology. - Johanna Dobereiner Biological Resource Center. Each pot will be fertilized at planting, with 90 kg ha-1 of P and 20 kg ha-1 of K. Analyses of soluble protein content in leaf and grain, leaf area (PA), shoot dry mass (MSPA), protoplasmic tolerance and water potential of the leaf (Ψa) will be performed before the imposition of water stress,  on the last day of dehydration and two days after rehydration. At the end of the cycle, dehydrated or continuously irrigated plants will be collected to evaluate the yield and protein content of the grains. The data will be subject to variance analysis and the results compared and segregated by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (p- (0.05) when a significant difference was found.
