SUMMARY:

Among the most significant pests in corn crops, the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) stands out. This pest is widely disseminated in corn crops in all producing regions, causing countless losses. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of Ceraeochrysa cincta (Schneider) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) as a biological control agent for eggs and neonatal caterpillars of S. frugiperda. A lacewing stock colony will be established from adults collected in Pinheiral, RJ. The study will be conducted under controlled conditions of temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod, at the Laboratory for Biological Control of Phytophagous Insects (LACOBIF) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). In the first chapter, the study analyzes the ability of C. cincta to complete its life cycle when feeding on S. frugiperda eggs, compared to its feeding on Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) eggs (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The goal is to understand whether C. cincta can become reproductively viable using S. frugiperda as prey. The bioassay will be conducted in a completely randomized experimental design, with two treatments: S. frugiperda eggs and E. kuehniella eggs, both acquired by purchase. A total of 20 larvae of each instar and 20 pupae of C. cincta will be used per treatment (one individual/replication). The parameters determined will be: duration of the instars, larval and pupal stages and viability of these stages. The emerged adults will be grouped into pairs (10 pairs per treatment) and monitored every 24 hours to determine adult longevity, pre-oviposition and oviposition periods and fecundity. One hundred eggs will be individualized to determine the embryonic period and viability. The data will be subjected to analysis of variance, if they meet its assumptions, and the means compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability. In the second chapter, the predatory capacity of C. cincta will be evaluated using S. frugiperda newborn caterpillars as prey. In bioassay 1, the consumption of S. frugiperda newborn caterpillars offered at different densities by the three instars of C. cincta will be studied. Newborn caterpillars (up to 24 hours after hatching), at each density (carried out in a preliminary study, where 5 prey densities will be stipulated), will be placed in an arena where a C. cincta larva (fasted for 24 hours) will be released, in a total of 10 larvae of each instar per density (one larva per repetition). The arena will consist of a polystyrene Petri dish with a lid. L1 larvae of C. cincta will be used up to 24 hours after hatching and L2 and L3 larvae up to 24 hours after the corresponding ecdysis. Every 24 hours, each instar will be observed to count the amount of prey consumed per day and, subsequently, the total consumption will be calculated. Bioassay 2 will be to determine the search time and handling of S. frugiperda caterpillars by C. cincta instars. For each instar, a C. cincta larva (fasted for 24 hours) will be released into the center of an arena containing S. frugiperda newborn caterpillars (up to 24 hours after hatching) to determine the search time and handling of this prey offered in the five densities previously defined. A total of 10 larvae of each instar will be observed for each density (one larva per repetition). L1 larvae of C. cincta will be used up to 24 hours after hatching and L2 and L3 larvae up to 24 hours after the corresponding ecdysis. The search and handling time will be recorded using a digital stopwatch. Observations of the predator's search behavior and handling of prey will be restricted until the first encounter between them. The bioassays will be evaluated in a completely randomized design, in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme [three larval instars of C. cincta x five densities of the newborn caterpillar of S. frugiperda), with 10 replications (one larva of C. cincta per replication). The data will be subjected to analysis of variance, if they meet its assumptions, and the means compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability. Prey consumption data for each instar of C. cinca will also be subjected to regression analysis. In the third chapter, a comparison is made between C. cincta and Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) in terms of biology and efficacy as biological control agents of S. frugiperda. Various biological parameters are examined, such as larval development, longevity, fecundity and egg viability, in addition to calculating the intrinsic rate of increase. Experiments will be carried out to determine several biological parameters, including aspects related to the development of larvae and pupae, as well as characteristics of the emerged adults, such as longevity, fecundity and egg viability. Furthermore, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) will be calculated, an important parameter for evaluating the population growth potential of the species studied. Statistical analysis of the data will be carried out using normality tests, ANOVA and specific tests for each variable, such as the chi-square test, with the aim of comparing results between species and determining significant differences. Statistical analyzes will be carried out in the R program. The results of these studies can contribute to the development of more effective strategies for biological control of S. frugiperda, considering the compatibility between C. cincta and this target prey.
