SUMMARY:

The plants known as buttonweed, belonging to the Rubiaceae families and the Borreria and Mitracarpus genera, represent a significant challenge in the management of soybean cultivation areas in the Brazilian Cerrado. High infestations of these plants have been reported, making control difficult, especially due to their low sensitivity to the herbicide glyphosate. Competition with agricultural crops can considerably reduce productivity, as observed in soybeans, where losses of up to 4.2% have been recorded. This project's main objective is to investigate and differentiate the species of buttonweed in the Cerrado, focusing on their morphological, physiological, cytogenetic and molecular characteristics. The research will seek to identify variations between the species that influence tolerance to glyphosate, such as their phenotypic structures, by performing exsiccated and morphological samples through light microscopy techniques, to identify the ploidy level of these plants and the number of chromosomes that each species that will be evaluated has; a karyogram will be performed. To distinguish the species molecularly, genetic diversity analysis will be performed using ISSR markers, aiming at developing more effective integrated management strategies for controlling these weeds. In addition, the study aims to explore alternative chemical control methods that can be applied more efficiently, which will be carried out through control and phytotoxicity tests, and herbicide metabolism by evaluating transient chlorophyll a fluorescence, antioxidant enzyme analyses, and herbicide conjugation and translocation with carbon 14. In this way, it will be possible to differentiate the species of broomweed and identify the tolerance level of each one, proposing a management strategy based on the results, thus offering a significant contribution to the management of these weeds in cropping systems in Brazil.
