SUMMARY:

The availability of fruits derived from ecologically based production systems in the consumer market of Rio de Janeiro is limited. In the case of passion fruit cultivation, the dissemination of technologies grounded in nature-based solutions and aligned with the financial realities of family farmers is a key demand for advancing the agroecological transition of this sector. Practices such as the use of soil cover species—particularly those from the Fabaceae family—and organic fertilization based on the recycling of agro-industrial residues, especially those of local or regional origin, can significantly contribute to the sustainability of passion fruit production systems. In this context, the use of fermented bran-based composts (FBCs) may provide nutritional benefits to plants and also influence the microbial community associated with soils under passion fruit cultivation. Given the above, the general objective of this thesis project is to develop a production system for passion fruit cultivated with Gliricidia sepium as a live trellis and fertilized with fermented bran-based compost. The project comprises three experimental stages: 1. Laboratory incubation assays to characterize the chemical, physicochemical, and microbiological properties of different FBC formulations, using a completely randomized design of 10 (compost formulations) × 3 (inoculum sources) with three replicates. A follow-up incubation will be conducted to analyze selected high-performance formulations at 0, 6, 12, and 21 days after fermentation. 2. Field trial in the experimental area of the Agroecological Station “Fazendinha Agroecológica Km 47” in Seropédica, with purple passion fruit cultivation. Treatments will include formulations based on wheat bran (60%) and castor bean meal (40%), inoculated with: a commercial microbial solution (T1); forest-captured microorganisms (T2); and no inoculum (T3), as well as a control (T4). The design will be a randomized block with a 2 (presence or absence of biochar) × 4 (compost formulations) factorial scheme. 3. On-farm experiment in a family farming unit in the municipality of Paracambi, evaluating five formulations: T1 – wheat bran (60%) + castor meal (40%); T2 – wheat bran (30%) + cassava peel bran (30%) + castor meal (40%); T3 – wheat bran (30%) + cassava peel bran (30%) + Gliricidia leaf bran (40%); T4 – 100% castor meal; and T5 – no fertilization. A randomized block design with 2 (with or without Gliricidia as live trellis) × 5 (FBC formulations) will be employed. Agronomic and post-harvest parameters of the crop will be evaluated. It is expected that the use of Gliricidia as a live support will reduce production costs, enhance soil fertility, and increase the productivity of passion fruit plants through the combined use of locally sourced fermented composts and biochar as a soil conditioner.
