SUMMARY:

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) stands out as one of the main agricultural crops in Brazil, with significant relevance in sugar production and renewable energy generation through ethanol and bioelectricity. However, its productivity is still limited by biotic and abiotic factors, such as water deficit during early developmental stages and the incidence of red rot of the stalk, caused by Colletotrichum falcatum. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), including species of Bacillus spp. and Nitrospirillum viridazoti, have demonstrated potential in enhancing plant growth, increasing stress tolerance, and providing biocontrol against phytopathogens. Nevertheless, integrated evaluations of the performance of bacteria applied individually and in consortia across different propagation systems and application methods are still needed. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of bacterial inoculants, applied individually and in consortia, on sugarcane growth promotion under conventional planting and on the biological control of red rot in pre-sprouted seedlings (PSS) of the RB867515 variety. In Experiment I, conducted under field conditions, applications of isolated bacteria and bacterial consortia will be evaluated via planting furrow and foliar spraying, with periodic measurements of plant height, stalk diameter, and tillering. In Experiment II, under controlled conditions, bacteria will be tested in PSS inoculated with C. falcatum, with evaluations of root and shoot growth, as well as disease severity at 30, 60, and 90 days after transplanting. Preliminary results from Experiment I indicate greater initial tillering (13.7–13.8 tillers m⁻¹) in treatments with isolated inoculation via planting furrow compared to the triple consortium (11.3 tillers m⁻¹), suggesting possible antagonism among microorganisms, with no significant differences observed for height and diameter. These findings highlight the potential of isolated PGPB to enhance early crop establishment, contributing to the development of more sustainable strategies, with reduced use of chemical inputs, increased stress tolerance, and improved productivity in the sugar-energy sector.
