RESUMO:

Brazil is one of the largest beef suppliers in the world supported by the rearing and fattening of some 215.2 million head of cattle. In order to maintain this high population of animals, Brazilian bovine farming occupies an area of pasture cultivated with approximately 115 million ha, most of which are grasses introduced as Capim Braquiária. On the other hand, it is known that in the dry season the forage production decreases considerably, mainly due to the fact that most Brazilian pastures are not irrigated. As a result, feed needs to be supplemented, otherwise the zootechnical indexes are reduced significantly. It is known that forage grasses present a rhizospheric and / or endophytic association with plant growth promoting bacteria and that these can contribute to the tolerance of these grasses to water stress. Therefore, this work aims to select efficient interactions between plant growth promoting bacteria and Brachiaria genotypes grown under dry conditions. To do this, bacterial isolates will initially be evaluated for their ability to exhibit the activity of the enzyme deaminase, which is involved in the reduction of ethylene levels in plants, which in high concentrations can lead to inhibition of plant growth or even death. Those isolates that possess this activity will be evaluated in greenhouse experiments and in the field submitted to water deficit. In this sense, knowledge about beneficial interactions between Brachiaria genotypes and plant growth promoting bacteria will allow the identification of efficient associations that indicate the effective contribution of these bacteria to forage tolerance to water stress. The end of the project is expected to identify Brachiaria genotypes that can be used in breeding programs in association with selected strains. Identifying more responsive interactions that lead to increased productivity will positively impact pasture sustainability and the achievement of Low Carbon Agriculture goals.
