SUMMARY:

Hops is a species of interest for cultivation in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro, where information on its adaptation and performance in these climatic and edaphic conditions is limited. Despite being a plant with a temperate climate and high latitudes, with a variable photoperiod throughout the year, experiments demonstrate the viability of cultivation in warmer regions with lower latitudes. However, little is known about the influence of management practices adopted on the quality of cones produced, especially with regard to the accumulation of heavy metals. The present project aims to: characterize the hop production areas in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro, aiming to identify the main sources of contamination of heavy metals in soils and plants; and to evaluate the potential use of poultry litter compost + biochar in the production of hops as a source of nutrients. The research will be carried out at the Experimental Farm of Grupo Petrópolis, located in Teresópolis, RJ. Initially, a survey of the main information related to the production areas will be carried out (area history, inputs used, cultivation practices adopted, main pests and diseases, and others). Subsequently, samples of soils and plants will be collected to characterize the areas in terms of fertility and the degree of physical degradation of the soils, and also to determine the levels of heavy metals contained in the plants, soils and inputs (organic and mineral) used in the system. In this way, it will be possible to determine the degree of contamination and bioavailability of metals, through the joint use of pollution (PI) and bioavailability (IB) indices, and to assess the risks to human health associated with the consumption of beers produced from this raw material. A field experiment will also be implemented, following a randomized block design, with a 3 x 3 + 1 factorial arrangement, with 4 replications and 3 plants per plot. The analyzed factors will be the compounds obtained with 90 days of composting, with different proportions of poultry litter + biochar (0, 10 and 15% of biochar), and the compost doses (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 kg of dry mass), plus the control (without addition of the compound). At the end of each cycle (6 months), the parameters will be determined: fresh and dry weight of cones, height of insertion of the first cones, length of side branches, length of cones and days from the beginning of sprouting to harvest. The levels of heavy metals contained in the soil, inflorescences and hop leaves will also be evaluated, as well as the quality parameters of essential oils and alpha and beta acids, in two cultivation cycles. The data set will be submitted to tests of normality and homogeneity, analysis of variance, tests of averages and simple correlations, and multivariate analyzes such as principal component analysis, grouping and discriminant analysis. It is expected, at the end of the project, to identify and understand the local factors that most contribute to environmental degradation and possible reduction in productivity and, with this, to propose strategies compatible with local conditions, aiming at improving the production system and the quality of cones produced. In addition, propose an adequate dose of poultry litter compost + biochar, as a source of nutrients, allowing to rationalize the use of synthetic fertilizers, guaranteeing safe management for the environment and possible reduction of production costs.
