SUMMARY:

Due the constant growth of the floriculture market and the demand for diversification of supply, the search for new species for ornamental purposes is a reality in the current scenario. A species that has great appeal for its insertion in this sector is the Zinnia elegans Jacqs. Zinnia has several key characteristics for its success as an ornamental plant, among them its short cycle, the presence of showy flowers with variations of different colors, its easy handling in the field, a long flowering period and high regrowth power. , which consequently is responsible for new branches and flowers. In addition, the culture has versatility of use, usually its production is intended for garden compositions, but can also be used for use as cut flowers and potted flowers. Its potted use has been potentiated, but the lack of established quality standards and proper management are still problems faced by the culture, since the plant needs to undergo treatment, capable of reducing the size of the plant, without causing loss of qualities. ornamental plants, allowing their commercialization in vases. The use of the growth regulator, paclobutrazol, is used in these cases, as it acts directly on the biosynthesis of gibberellin, blocking the synthesis of gibberellin isomers, which would have the function of promoting the elongation of the stem internodes. Thus, the project in question aims to (1) evaluate the effects of different doses of PBZ on two zinnia varieties, and (2) propose a classification criterion for the production of potted zinnia, based on the proposed classification criteria. by the Brazilian Institute of Floriculture. For this, two experiments will be carried out in the Horticulture Sector of the Agronomy Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (Seropédica - RJ), where in Experiment I an explanatory dose range of PBZ will be used (0; 2; 4; 6). ; 8 and 10 ppm) that will be applied via drench in the substrate at the time of transplanting the seedlings to the 15 pots. Which will be derived from Experiment I, working with a more adequate interval, aiming at a conscious management of the retardant. Both experiments will be carried out in a completely randomized design, with a 6x2 factorial arrangement (doses x varieties), with 5 replications, and one plant per pot. At the end of each experiment, the following parameters will be surveyed: plant height; plant formation; opening point; serious defects; light defects; leaf area; number of leaves; stem diameter and chlorophyll content. After surveying the parameters, the data will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), and if necessary, to regression analysis, using the free software R (version 4.2.0). It is expected, at the end of the work, to obtain an ideal dose of PBZ, which is responsible for reducing the size of the zinnia varieties, making them harmonious for commercialization in pots, without losing the characteristics of ornamental quality, together with the possibility of to propose a classification standard for potted zinnia, catapulting the commercial cultivation of this culture in the country.
