SUMMARY:

Studies on cultivation techniques are important to raise the level of knowledge about the species and increase the chances of producing high quality flowers, and consequently, increase marketing values and consumer acceptance. One of the ornamental species recently introduced in Brazilian commercial floriculture is Zinnia elegans, which has multiple uses as a cut flower, potted flowers, use in gardens and even as an attractive plant in productive systems. Despite the potential use, the management of the culture and the post-harvest of flowers is still not well established. In this context, the main objectives of this work are: i) to verify the influence of planting density on the quality of flowers of Zinnia elegans varieties 'Gigante da California Vermelha' and 'Luz da Lua'; and ii) define the harvesting point based on the flower opening stage. Two experiments will be carried out separately. The first, with the objective of evaluating the influence of planting density, will be carried out in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme 2 (Zinnia varieties) x 3 (spacing: 30x30; 30x20; 20x20 cm), with five replications, 10 useful plants per portion. The experiment will be conducted in the Horticulture Sector, will consist of five beds with dimensions of 1.2 m x 16 m, in all there will be 30 experimental plots, each spacing with 36 plants/plot (30 x 30 cm), 44 plants/plot ( 30 x 20 cm) and 55 plants/plot (20 x 20 cm). When the floral stems reach the harvest point, the maximum height of the plants, the chlorophyll contents (a, b and total), the maximum number of leaves, the number of commercial and non-commercial flowers, the diameter of commercial flowers, and the length, diameter and fresh weight of commercial flower stems. Then, the classification of zinnia floral stems will be carried out according to the methodology adapted by Martins (2020). The second experiment that will determine the harvest point in two varieties of Z. elegans will be in a factorial scheme 2 (varieties) x 3 (opening points: fully closed bud (T1), bud with beginning of ligules opening (T2) and flowers fully open (T3)) with 10 replicates and 2 flower stems per plot. The floral stems will be harvested in the morning and standardized with 30 cm. The weight of the floral stem and the weight of water absorbed by the flower will be recorded daily. The evaluation of the visual quality of the floral stems will be carried out according to the senescence scale proposed by Martins (2020). The data from the respective experiments will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA), when significant differences between treatments are identified, the quantitative parameters will be submitted to the Tukey test at 5% probability, and the descriptive parameters to regression analysis. It is expected to know the influence of planting density on the quality of cut flowers of Zinnia elegans Jacq. (cv. Gigante da California and Luz da Lua) through the evaluation of production attributes, and the commercialization pattern for the species, as well as determining the ideal harvesting point that promotes greater longevity of the floral stem.
