SUMMARY:

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is one of the main vegetables produced in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro and one of the most sought after by the market. Its cultivation and production is limited by the crop's climatic restrictions, circumvented by using cultivars that are more tolerant to heat; nutritional requirements, controlled with a large supply of fertilizers and; occurrence of diseases, especially club rot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae. Poultry litter is the most used fertilizer, but with potential adverse effects due to the contribution of potentially toxic and toxic metals. One of the proposed strategies aimed at safe use is its composting with the addition of biochar. As little is known about the effects of adding biochar on the quality of organic compounds, the present work was developed with the objective of: a) evaluating the addition of different doses of biochar in the production of litter-based compounds and their effects on development of broccoli plants, cruciferous clubroot and quality of inflorescences including toxic metal content; b) evaluate the effect of fertilization with poultry litter composted with different doses of biochar on the development and production of two broccoli cultivars. To this end, three tests were carried out in a greenhouse and pots fertilized with organic compost obtained by composting poultry litter (CA) plus different proportions of biochar (BC), 0, 5, 10 and 15%: CA+BC0 %, CA+BC5%, CA+BC10% and CA+BC15%. In the first, the Coliseu® cultivar was used, fertilization with the four compounds (175 g per pot) and inoculation or not with P. brassicae spores (5x103 spores g-1 of soil). In the second and third, the Coliseu® and Legacy® cultivars were used, respectively, and fertilization with 300 g per pot of the compounds CA+BC0%, CA+BC5%, CA+BC10% and CA+BC15% plus control without litter of aviary. In the first trial, there was a high severity of the disease and no effect of the compounds or the inoculation x compound interaction on the development and production of broccoli, but with a positive effect of the addition of biochar in reducing the bioavailability of  Pb in inflorescences.. In the second trial with the Coliseu cultivar and in the third with Legacy, a positive effect of the compounds on the development and accumulation of biomass was recorded, observing an optimal dose between 7.7 and 12.7% of biochar, producing inflorescences of quality and suited to market demands.
