SUMMARY:

Studies on cultivation techniques are important to increase the level of knowledge about the species and increase the chances of producing high quality flowers. Despite the potential for use, the cultivation and post-harvest management of Zinnia elegans flowers is not yet well established. In this context, the main objectives of the present work are: i) to verify the influence of planting density on the quality of floral stems of Zinnia elegans cultivars Gigante da California Vermelha and Luz da Lua; and ii) define the harvest point based on the floral opening stage. Two experiments were carried out in the Horticulture Sector, in the Department of Crop Science at the Agronomy Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (Seropédica – RJ). He first, conducted in an experimental field, the two zinnia cultivars were cultivated in spacings of 30x30 cm, 30x20 cm and 20x20 cm, which allowed the cultivation of 12, 16 and 24 plants per square meter, respectively. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 2 (zinnia cultivars) x 3 (spacing) factorial scheme, with five replications, with 6 useful plants being analyzed per plot. Upon reaching the harvest point, the floral stems were harvested and taken to the laboratory to evaluate stem length (cm), stem diameter (cm), flower diameter (cm) and fresh weight (g), as proposed by Martins (2020). At the end of the experiment, plant productivity was evaluated and productivity per square meter was estimated. The second was carried out with floral stems of zinnia 'Red California Giant' produced in a greenhouse at opening points F, G and H/I (determined through a zinnia flower development scale) for post-harvest analysis. The experiment followed a completely randomized experimental design composed of a 1 (cultivar) x 3 (opening points) factorial scheme with 8 replications and 2 floral stems per plot. The stems were standardized at 30 cm, weighed individually to obtain the fresh weight and the diameter of the flowers was measured. After standardization, the rods were placed in containers containing 200 mL of water under a laboratory bench at room temperature. The weight of the floral stem and the weight of water absorbed by the plant were recorded daily. The diameter of the flower was evaluated daily only at the opening points F and G. The evaluation of the visual quality of the floral stems was carried out according to the senescence scale proposed by Martins (2020) and the total and commercial longevity of the floral stems were determined. of zinnia. According to the results obtained in the present study, there was an increase in productivity per area at 30x20 cm spacing, enabling the commercial cultivation of the two zinnia cultivars without compromising their quality. And harvesting zinnia flowers with closed buds (Stages F and G) is not recommended, as there is no opening during post-harvest of the flowers.
