SUMMARY:

Cowpea is a legume grown in different regions of the world. In Brazil, the crop is of socio-economic importance to low-income families, being an essential part of the diet of the poorest populations, as it is a low-cost food alternative, often referred to as "poor people's meat" due to the high protein content of the beans. It is a drought-tolerant legume that adapts well to semi-arid conditions. However, when cultivated plants are subjected to water stress during the growing cycle, they change their physiological, morphological, and biochemical functions, affecting their productivity. Therefore, this work aims to characterize the physiological responses and grain protein content of four cowpea genotypes: EPACE 10, BRS Sempre Verde, BRS Pingo de ouro 1-2, and Paulistinha, in response to water deficit, in a greenhouse of the Crop Science Department of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). Cowpea is a legume grown in different regions of the world. In Brazil, the crop is of socio-economic importance for low-income families, being an essential part of the diet of the poorest population, as it is a low-cost nutritional alternative, often referred to as "poor people's meat" due to the high protein content of the beans. It is a drought-tolerant legume that adapts well to semi-arid conditions. However, when cultivated plants are exposed to water stress during the growing cycle, they change their physiological, morphological, and biochemical functions, affecting their productivity. In this context, and intending to select genotypes more adapted to drought and with a better protein profile, this work aims to characterize the physiological responses and grain protein content of four cowpea genotypes: EPACE 10, BRS Sempre Verde, BRS Pingo de ouro 1-2 and Paulistinha, in response to water deficit, in a greenhouse at The experiment will be conducted in a completely randomized design (DIC) with two plants per pot: 4 genotypes x 9 collections x 3 replicates, for 108 experimental units. Water deficit will be imposed on the plants when at least 50% show the first flower bud. To characterize drought tolerance in cowpea, the following physiological measures will be evaluated: leaf water potential, relative leaf water content, leaf area, aerial part dry mass, protoplasm tolerance, leaf soluble protein content, before stress, during stress, and after rehydration. At physiological maturity, the cowpea genotypes will be collected to evaluate the production components and protein content of the grain, in plants exposed to drought or not. The data will be subjected to analysis of variance and the results will be compared and separated using the Student-Newman-Keus test (p < 0.05) when a significant difference is detected. It is hoped that the genotypes will show desirable characteristics for drought tolerance and that the hypothesis that different cowpea genotypes may show different adaptive responses when subjected to water deficit, with varying grain protein content, will be confirmed.
