SUMMARY:

This project aims to evaluate the effects of fertigation with cattle wastewater (CWW) and different irrigation depths on the growth and ornamental quality of Impatiens walleriana Hook. F. (Turkish Kiss). Floriculture, a dynamic and expanding sector in Brazil, requires sustainable alternatives that combine productivity, aesthetic quality, and environmental preservation. In this context, the use of CWW emerges as a promising strategy because it provides nutrients, reduces mineral fertilizer costs, and enables the reuse of agricultural waste. I. walleriana is a prominent species in the ornamental market, valued for its diversity of colors, adaptability, and versatile uses. However, it has high water requirements and is sensitive to water deficit stress, which can compromise flower development and quality. Therefore, efficient irrigation management is crucial to maintaining its commercial quality, especially in a scenario of increasing pressure on water resources. The project will be developed in two experiments at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica campus. Experiment 1 will evaluate the production of potted plants under fertigation with increasing doses of ARB (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) combined with different drip irrigation flow rates (2.5 to 4.0 L h⁻¹), in a greenhouse. The design will be randomized blocks, in a 4x4 factorial arrangement, with five replicates. Growth parameters (height, number of leaves, biomass), physiological characteristics (chlorophyll), and ornamental attributes (number and diameter of flowers) will be analyzed, in addition to the water deficit sensitivity index (Ky). The irrigation system will be automated by an Automatic Irrigation Actuator (AAI), which adjusts the water supply according to crop demand. Experiment 2 will focus on the initial growth of seedlings in different substrates (vermiculite and MacPlant®) and fertilizers, also evaluating seasonality (winter and summer). The design will be completely randomized in a 2x7x2 factorial arrangement, with ten replicates. Leaf number, height, root length, total dry mass, seedling vigor, and root ball stability will be measured. The research seeks to prove the hypothesis that the combination of ARB and rational irrigation management can improve the performance and ornamental quality of I. walleriana. The aim is to demonstrate the viability of ARB as an alternative fertilizer, establish recommendations for water and nutritional management of the crop, and demonstrate the potential of affordable irrigation automation technologies. Thus, the research will contribute to sustainability in the national floriculture sector, reconciling efficient use of water and inputs with reduced environmental impacts of livestock farming, in addition to strengthening the adoption of practices aligned with the circular economy in agriculture.
