SUMMARY:

Greenponics is a cultivation technique based on the use of non-composted plant biomass as both substrate and gradual nutrient source, with potential to reduce dependence on external inputs and support more sustainable production systems. This study aimed to evaluate the viability of Greenponics using gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) and Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum) for lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) seedling production and for arugula cultivation in a tile-based system. The dissertation was organized into two chapters. The first chapter evaluated seedling production in trays using treatments with gliricidia combined with soil, Bahia grass combined with soil, a mixture of both biomasses, and soil alone. The second chapter evaluated arugula cultivation in tiles using six proportions between gliricidia and Bahia grass, ranging from 100% gliricidia to 100% Bahia grass, with automated irrigation management and assessment of substrate water retention. In seedling production, there was a significant interaction between biomass source and biomass-to-soil proportion. Among the proportions effectively tested, the composition containing 80% gliricidia and 20% soil showed the highest observed means for several variables. However, the regressions estimated different maximum responses among biomass sources and crops: approximately 66–67% gliricidia and 62–65% Bahia grass for lettuce, and 56–59% gliricidia and 41–46% Bahia grass for arugula, Greenponics proved to be viable for seedling production and arugula cultivation in tiles, provided that biomass proportions, substrate physical structure, and water management are properly adjusted to the cultivation system.
