SUMMARY:

The growing demand for food, together with population growth and the need to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture, has driven the search for more sustainable production systems and the use of renewable resources. In organic agriculture, the production of ecological vegetables plays an important role in the sustainable production of organic food and in environmental conservation. In this context, the Greenponics cultivation system stands out, using non-composted plant biomass, mainly bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) and gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium), either alone or combined with mineral substrates, as the main source of nutrients for cultivated plants, especially vegetables. The present study will evaluate the efficiency of different combinations of dry, non-composted plant biomass of bahiagrass (P. notatum) and gliricidia (G. sepium), combined with commercial sand, vermiculite, and agricultural gypsum, in seedling production and in the production of new and residual biomass during lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivation in tiles under a Verdeponia system. The research is structured into two complementary chapters. In the first chapter, two cultivation cycles will be evaluated, comprising six experiments to assess combinations of P. notatum and G. sepium with commercial sand, vermiculite, and agricultural gypsum based on germination characteristics, growth, biomass production, chlorophyll a fluorescence, Falker chlorophyll index, seedling quality, macro- and micronutrient contents, mineral forms of nitrogen (N), especially nitrate (NO₃⁻) and ammonium (NH₄⁺), and nitrate reductase activity. In the second chapter, the performance of lettuce grown in ecological fiber-based tiles will be evaluated using combinations of dry, non-composted plant biomass of P. notatum and G. sepium, with white dolomite stones to promote biomass compaction. Two cultivation cycles will be evaluated, including, in the second cycle, a comparison between new biomass and the reuse of the residue from the first cycle with the addition of new biomass to the treatments. Morphological growth characteristics, fresh and dry biomass production, chlorophyll a fluorescence, Falker chlorophyll index, chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll contents, as well as macro- and micronutrient concentrations, will be evaluated. It is expected that combinations of substrates capable of providing suitable conditions for plant development will be identified, contributing to vegetable production strategies with reduced dependence on external inputs.
