RESUMO:

Pepper (Capsicum spp.), is among the most consumed and valued spices in world cuisine as seasonings. In addition to being of great importance in cooking, some types of pepper trees of the genus Capsicum for having characteristics that confer aesthetic value, have also been used as ornamental plants. In the production of peppers both for use in cooking or as an ornamental plant, the formation of seedlings is one of the most important stages for the crop cycle, as it directly influences the final performance of the plant. A technology used to quickly and efficiently obtain plants adapted for pot cultivation has been the use of growth retardants. In this sense, two experiments using pepper (Capsicum spp.), Were conducted with the objective of evaluating the production and quality of pepper seedlings produced in different organic substrates (Chapter I) and to evaluate the effects of paclobutrazol on the production and quality of pepper trees pot with ornamental potential (Chapter II). In chapter I, was studied the quality of three pepper genotypes G1 - (ENAS-5007), G2 - (ENAS-5031) and G3 - (ENAS-5032) grown on alternative substrates composed of millipede compost (S1), mixture of millipede compost and coconut fiber, in the proportion of 1:1, base volume (S2) and commercial organic substrates. In Chapter II, the ornamental potential of the ENAS-5007 and ENAS-5032 genotypes for the flower market was evaluated. For this, as plants treated with growth retardant Paclobutrazol, in drench, at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1, grown in a 1 L pot. It was possible to conclude that, no experiment included tested substrates (Chapter I), the substrate S1 - 100% millipede compost promoted the best development to the pepper seedlings in the three different genotypes for all parameters evaluated. However, the combination of the S2 substrate (50% millipede compost + 50% coconut fiber) has the potential to be used in the production of pepper seedlings with seedlings of superior quality to the commercial substrate, enabling the maximization of the use of the millipede compost as a substrate for production of organic pepper seedlings. In chapter II, the use of paclobutrazol in doses of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1, in the ENAS-5007 and ENAS-5032 accessions provided the plants with a height within the standard required for use in ornamentation, however, it did not improve the ornamental characteristics of the genotypes.
