Alternative management of white rust (Puccinia horiana), production and postharvest
of cut chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora tzvelev) Puccinia horiana, natural products, disease control
Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) is a product with wide commercialization throughout Brazil and the diversity of types and colors, resistance to transport and its easy adaptation to different regions makes it one of the main products sold in different markets. However, white rust (Puccinia horiana), one of the most important leaf diseases in the crop, has brought great economic damage to producers. The increase in the levels of pesticides, the high cost of chemical control, the emergence of populations of resistant phytopathogens and the risks of contamination have led man to the need to obtain alternative products for the control of diseases. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate, under greenhouse conditions, the effect of vegetable oils and propolis extract on the control of white chrysanthemum rust, as well as their production and post-harvest quality. The disease incidence over time and severity at the end of the culture cycle were evaluated. Essential oils of lemongrass, citronella, propolis extract and a fungicide were tested. The experiments were carried out at Sítio do Sossego, located in Nova Friburgo - RJ, and in the experimental field of Phytotechnics at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, in Seropédica - RJ. The evaluations of the plant material were made at the FITOLAB laboratory, located at the Agronomy Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica - RJ. The following were evaluated: plant height, number of nodes, number of diseased plants per plot, number of diseased leaves / plant, number of pustules per leaf in the middle third, from the appearance of the first pustule until the end of the cycle every 10 days; stem diameter, stem weight, number of inflorescences, number of buds and diameter of the largest flower at the end of the cycle. For the post-harvest test, the flower stems of chrysanthemums of the Zembla and Sheena varieties grown in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro were subjected to the following treatments: the commercial product Flower®, indicated as a preservative of cut flowers, grass essential oil lemon, citronella essential oil, propolis extract, 10% sucrose, pulsing solution (10% sucrose) and distilled water (control). The following evaluations were performed on alternate days: fresh pasta, weight of solutions, pH. For the evaluation, a scale of scores attributed throughout the experiment was adapted for the parameters turgor of leaves and inflorescences and color of inflorescences. All alternative treatments had the potential to control the incidence of diseased leaves, the number of pustules and the severity of white rust, in addition to influencing the production of flower stems. The production of the cut chrysanthemum of the variety White Reagan presents a standard of commercial quality for the conditions of the municipality of Seropédica - RJ in the autumn / winter period. The longevity of inflorescences was positively influenced by essential oils, sucrose and Flower® for both varieties of chrysanthemums, with the latter showing better performance.
