SUMMARY:

Nitrous oxide (N2O) has approximately 300 times the heating power of CO2, and
agricultural activity is responsible for a large part of the emissions of this gas. Several
agricultural practices are being studied to mitigate N2O emissions in the agriculture sector, such as the use of plant species that are capable of producing compounds that inhibit microorganisms that act in the nitrification process in the soil, such compounds are known as a biological inhibitor of nitrification (IBN) as well as the use of growth-promoting microorganisms, which can act directly or indirectly in reducing N2O emissions through biochemical processes. Based on this information and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and especially N2O from agriculture. This study aimed to: (i) evaluate the potential of Brachiaria humidicola compared to Brachiaria brizantha (cv. Marandu) in reducing N2O emissions in tropical conditions; (ii) evaluate the effect of inoculation with plant growth promoting bacteria (BPCV) on the production of biomass and N accumulation in 2 cultivars of brachiaria; and (iii) Assess the effect of the application of BPCV on N2O emissions from the soil planted with 2 cultivars of brachiaria. An experiment in a greenhouse was carried out with an Argisol, where the inoculated and uninoculated brachiaria seeds were sown, where they received a dose of 40 kg N ha-1. N2O emissions were measured using static chambers. Yield and N accumulation in plants were evaluated. It was not possible to see an effect of the use of Brachiaria humidicola on the accumulated emission of N2O. The use of BPCV reduced N2O emissions in Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, showing a 61.56% reduction in accumulated emissions. The use of inoculation increased the plant mass by 33.69% in cv.  Marandu inoculated and in 20.16% in the inoculated humidicola about the respective uninoculated brachiaria. In relation to total N, inoculation increased the N content in the plant by 58.28% and 8.34% in cv. Marandu and humidicola respectively. In general, the results demonstrated that the use of growth promoters can be a strategy to be used to reduce N2O emissions from the soil while promoting a better use of fertilizer in brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu.
