Morphoagronomic characterization of accessions and genetic divergence among pepper accessions (Capsicum spp.). 2021.
production; protected cultivation; pepper plants; fresh fruits.
Peppers of the Capsicum genus, despite being explored by indigenous peoples of America for over 7000 years, still have enormous potential to be explored, whether for culinary, medicinal, ornamental and industrial use. Capsicum accessions kept in Germoplasma Bank need to be characterized aiming their possible use in genetic improvement programs or cultivation recommendation. The morphoagronomic characterization makes it possible to identify the potential and suggest new varieties seeking expanding markets and taking advantage of the diversity of the genus. Given the above, this work aimed to preserve, characterize and estimate the genetic divergence between accessions of part of the Capsicum germplasm collection of the Department of Plant Science of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), in addition to evaluating the most promising agronomically. for fresh consumption, under greenhouse conditions. Initially, 29 accessions were characterized regarding morphoagronomic characteristics and species identification. Then, 10 accessions with the most desirable characteristics for fresh consumption were taken and evaluated in terms of productivity and morphoagronomic aspects. With the data from the first study, the Cole-Rodgers dissimilarity index, the Nearest Neighbor hierarchical cluster (VMP) and the Tocher optimization cluster were determined. Data from the second experiment were subjected to analysis of variance, Scott-Knott mean test (p<0.05), phenotypic and genotypic correlation analysis, path analysis and genotype-ideotype distance. Tocher's method was the most suitable for grouping the accessions of the collection, forming 5 groups. Access ENAS 5043 was the most productive in the collection and environmental factors had little influence on the results. The variable with the greatest influence on the basic variable (total fresh mass of fruits) was the fresh mass of fruits with seeds. The accessions ENAS 5043 and ENAS 5017 were the ones that showed the greatest selection gains in all evaluated parameters. It was verified the presence of accessions with wide genetic variability and agronomic potential of production for different market niches. Accessions ENAS 5043 and 5017 can be selected for improvement programs, aiming at the consumption of fresh fruits
