SUMMARY:

In the face of increasing global energy demand and environmental impacts generated by the burning of fossil fuels, the search for renewable energy sources to meet global energy demand has become fundamental. The Elephant grass and Sugarcane are two grasses of C4 metabolism that have high photosynthetic efficiency and great ability to accumulate dry matter, characteristics that make the two crops excellent plant species options for biomass production for energy purposes. The burning of plant biomass to obtain energy can represent in the medium to long term a change in the national energy scenario and be responsible for reducing the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. In view of this, the objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the biomass production potential of 10 genotypes of Elephant grass and 3 varieties of sugarcane, and (2) to quantify the contribution of BNF to the nitrogenated nutrition of these crops. For this two different experiments were performed in two concrete tanks, of 120m2 by 0.6m depth, filled with Argisol marked with 15N. The two experiments were conducted without the use of nitrogenated fertilizer to favor the BNF process and received fertilizers with macro and micronutrient sources according to the need observed from periodic soil analyses. In the two studies, the 15N natural abundance technique was used to calculate the N derived from BNF. The genotypes of P13G13, P21G15 and BRS CAPIAÇU were prominent in the annual production of biomass, reaching values of approximately 24 Mg.ha-¹, already the variety of sugarcane RB867515 stood out in the production of biomass, reaching the value of approximately 200 Mg.ha-¹. The average N derived from BNF for the genotypes of Elephant grass was around 35% and for the varieties of sugarcane the average was 30%. It is possible to conclude at the end of these two studies that the elephant grass and sugarcane are two plant species with great potential for biomass accumulation for energy purposes, when considering the conditions applied to the experiments in question. Other studies considering new scenarios and genotypes of elephant grass and new varieties of sugarcane may be interesting to complement the results obtained.
