SUMMARY:

Agroecological systems of plant production are premised on the diversity of plant species in the production area and its surroundings in the search for agricultural sustainability. In these systems, in addition to generating income, certain plants must perform functions that optimize biological processes (e.g., biological nitrogen fixation and biological control), thus contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and minimizing the use of inputs external to the property, with consequent cost reduction. Green manures, for example, are important for improving soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and soil and water conservation. Among the components of biodiversity associated with crops, there are predatory ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), which are important biological control agents of vegetable pests, but their food can be supplemented with pollen and nectar. Therefore, plants that provide these floral resources composing the vegetation of agroecological systems should help in the conservation of these beneficial insects. The present study was conducted in the Intensive Organic Cultivation of Vegetables Module (MCOIH), implemented in 2010 at Fazendinha Agroecológica Km 47 (Seropédica, RJ). Since its inception, MCOIH has aimed to develop technologies for organic production of vegetables, valuing the minimum dependence on external inputs, and generating work and income for a family of four. To this end, the MCOIH is composed of six different subsystems of crops that include vegetable crops in consortium and/or rotation, with the use of green manure, and systems for the production of plant biomass. Research on biomass management, green manure, composting, soil biota and geostatistical analysis of chemical and physical soil qualities have already been conducted at MCOIH, however, studies on its entomofauna are lacking. In this context, the present work was divided into four chapters with specific objectives. Chapter I had the following objectives: (i) to evaluate the economic viability of an organic system for the production of different vegetables, using only fertilizer of strictly plant origin produced in the area itself, with its profitability estimated by commercialization in the organic, conventional and site in Baixada Fluminense, (ii) as well as determine the nutrient balance from inputs (fertilization sources) and nutrient outputs (harvest) and (iii) characterize the beneficial entomofauna present in this area. In chapter II, the faunal analysis of ladybirds captured in the MCOIH was carried out during two consecutive years, in addition to determining the population fluctuation of ladybirds during that time. In chapter III, the spatial and temporal distribution of these insects within the MCOIH was characterized, during these two years, using geostatistics. In chapter IV we sought to diagnose possible sources of pollen for these predatory insects in the MCOIH, identifying the pollen grains ingested by the adults of these insects using palynology. However, in this work it was observed that the commercialization of vegetables produced in MCOIH in the conventional market is not recommended, since it generates negative net income/loss. In addition to observing that the diversity of plant species cultivated in the area is capable of maintaining a diversified entomofauna, but with a predominance of two families of entomophagous insects (Dolichopodidae and Coccinellidae) and two of decomposing insects (Micropezidae and Stratiomyidae). Within the MCOIH, areas with vegetable monocultures do not favor the diversity of ladybirds, the opposite occurring with polycultures, both of which harbor the same species of ladybird predators of aphids that infest vegetables. A complex of predatory ladybug species is present in the MCOIH, but C. sanguinea is more frequent and occurs throughout the year. However, the increase in the capture of individuals is not always linked to the spatiality of the data. The ladybird Cycloneda sanguinea was the species in which the largest number of pollen grains were recovered.
