SUMMARY:

The change in land use caused by the replacement of extensive areas of original coverage of the Cerrado in agricultural areas, involving deforestation and fires, has occurred at an accelerated pace in recent years, contributing to the increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. In this sense, the present work aims to evaluate the stock of organic carbon and the fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) under different management systems in the Brazilian Cerrado in a long-term experiment, in order to determine the effect of different soil management practices. management under soil organic carbon in this biome. The study will be carried out in a long-term experiment conducted at the Embrapa beef cattle experimental station in the Cerrado region of Mato Grosso do Sul, with the following treatments: pasture established in 1993, fertilized every 2 years; degraded pasture established in 1978; area of continuous cultivation under no-tillage, area of continuous cultivation managed in a conventional system and an area of native Cerrado vegetation. The development of the study is being done as follows: Stage 1- Carrying out a meta-analysis on the C/N ratio of the Cerrado soil; Step 2 - Test methodologies for the quantification of charcoal in Cerrado soils, in order to neutralize the influence of charcoal on the physical fractions of the SOM. Step 3 - Determine the rate of accumulation of OM fractions in contrasting soil management treatments in long-term experiments in the Cerrado, in order to understand the behavior of SOM in this region.
