SUMMARY:

Doctoral student Hugo Machado Rodrigues develops doctoral dissertation with PPGA-CS in the area of Digital Soil Mapping and develops the study entitled “Author-An Automatic Delinery of Reference Areas for Efficient Soil Sampling: Case Studies with Mapping of classes and attributes of the soil ”. The doctoral student received from the members of the Qualification Board the following questions: 1- The air-based approach defines window sizes at a limit of up to 30% of the evaluated area. What criteria are used to define such values? Why such a choice? 2- Why would air be more interesting than a sampling approach? What are the computational costs of the approach based on random sampling and air? If the random approach could be based on some criterion that would help improve choices, would it be no more interesting than air? 3- The gower index is based on variables of different types, for example, numerical variables, ordinal nominal categorical, etc. This feature at the same time important and interesting, as it allows such an index to be applied to different types of problems, can also suffer from biases, especially in the issue of data imputation. How does this impact your analyzes? Would it be possible to use an approach using a modification in this index to mitigate such a feature? 4- What criteria, factors, variables, and values should be taken into consideration for choosing the best place to establish a reference area for subsequent soil survey? 5- What is the dual paradigm of the soil-landscape and soil formation factors? 6- What is a soil survey? 7- How is the knowledge of an expert about the solo-groory relationship translated and passed on to others? 8- Why use reference area as a method for sampling new soil samples in the field? 9- What criteria, factors, variables, and values should be taken into consideration to define the size and shape (design) of a reference area for subsequent soil survey? How would it be possible, automatically, to choose the best place and define the best design of a reference area? Describe in detail a single algorithm, or separate algorithms, to perform these two tasks. Propose a detailed methodological approach to develop, verify and validate the algorithm (s). 11- What hypotheses does the thesis intend to answer? 12- What is organic matter, carbon and the importance of measuring them? 13- How to collect samples to measure carbon? 14- What are the problems associated with the carbon stock calculation? The doctoral student handed over the answers and was considered fit for the oral exam. At this stage, the doctoral student presents the results orally and will be available to the members of the bank for arguments that are necessary.
