Exhausted mushroom substrate: characterization and evaluation of its potential in the circular economy.

The expansion of edible mushroom production in Brazil has resulted in the significant generation of organic waste, particularly spent mushroom substrate (SMS), mainly from the cultivation of species of the genus Pleurotus. This material has a high content of organic matter and partially degraded lignocellulosic compounds, making it a waste product with potential for reuse in sustainable agricultural systems. In this context, the present work aimed to characterize spent mushroom substrate and evaluate its potential use as an agricultural input within the framework of the circular economy, with emphasis on its application as organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. The study was developed in the Soil Biological Chemistry Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, using SMS from a production unit located in the municipality of Itaguaí – RJ.
