SUMMARY:

With an increasingly intense increase in the world population, there is a growing demand for food, intensifying agricultural practices aimed at greater productivity, which, however, are environmentally unsustainable, contributing to soil degradation, deforestation and higher emissions of greenhouse gases (Li et al., 2020; FAO, 2019). In this sense, to ensure sustainable agriculture and increase the efficiency of application and use of fertilizers, many producers have resorted to a fertilization based on organic materials (Espie & Ridgway, 2020; Crusciol et al., 2020), among which are find humic substances (HS), which are the most stable components of soil organic matter, arising from the degradation of plant and animal residues and microbial biomass (Hayes & Swift, 2020). A better understanding of the chemical and structural characteristics of SH allows a deeper understanding of their influence on plant development. Several studies have focused on the relationship between the structure, property and functions performed by SH (García et al., 2019; Pinos et al., 2019; Canellas et al.; 2010), in addition to highlighting the morphophysiological effects of these substances when applied as natural fertilizers, emphasizing their hormonal-like activity, capable of triggering responses in roots and aerial parts (Nardi et al., 2018; Olaetxea et al., 2015; Pizzeghello et al., 2013; Muscolo et al., 2007a; Nardi et al., 2002). A relatively little explored application modality is SH foliar spraying (De Hita et al., 2020). However, most published papers on foliar application of these substances concern their effects on only one crop, for example: corn (Çelik et al., 2010), cucumber (De Hita et al., 2020; Unlu et al. , 2011), tomato (Yldirim, 2007) and lettuce (Wang et al., 2019), leaving many doubts about the mechanisms of growth responses triggered by the application of the same source of SH in different species and at different times. As a result, for this project the following hypotheses were formulated: H0: The HS from the same source and applied via the leaves trigger similar growth response mechanisms in plants of different species. H1: Growth response mechanisms are triggered by different pathways from the foliar application of SH extracted from the same source in different plant species. The general objective of this work is to identify which groups of plants of commercial interest, the same source of HS acts more efficiently, in order to be able to recommend organic fertilizers that are advantageous to the rural producer from the point of view of cost-benefit relation . The specific objectives are: a) Isolate, purify and spectroscopically characterize HS extracted from vermicompost; b) Apply foliar solutions with different doses of SH at different stages of development in the following crops: lettuce, tomato, corn and pigeon pea, in order to obtain the concentration that provides the best growth responses (dry and fresh mass of the aerial part and roots; length of taproot and shoot) for each species (best dose-response); c) From the application of the dose-response, evaluate morphophysiological parameters such as: levels of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids; soluble solids contents; reducing and total sugars; total yield of each crop.
