RESUMO:

Pharmaceutical excipients, cyclodextrins (CDs) quickly demonstrated high potential for evolution, being used in more promising research areas where the need for innovative techniques is urgently needed. Several evidences show the CDs are not only excipients, having applications in the most varied areas, demonstrating advantages in its use. Their very particular structure and properties allow them to have unique applications that can revolutionize different and varied therapies.
CDs have a central hydrophobic cavity that has the ability to hold a molecule while maintaining an external hydrophilic surface, making them capable of serving as a microcapsule shell. CD encapsulation can improve aqueous solubility and stability against changing heat, light and oxidation conditions and reduce volatility. Microencapsulation of essential oils with cyclodextrins has been widely explored by researchers in order to expand their applications.
Essential oils and their active components have low physicochemical stability and low aqueous solubility that limit their applications in the pharmaceutical industry. The essential oil from leaves of Schinus molle L. have been report the use as antimicrobials, insecticides, antifungals and antioxidants. To reduce its volatility and hydrophobicity, we will use the inclusion method in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and its hydroxyalkylated derivative (HPβCD) by various methods, already described in the literature, in order to compare and choose the best methodology. The physicochemical properties of these inclusion complexes were characterized and the antimicrobial activity of the best performing inclusion complex will be tested against two microorganisms: S. aureus and E. coli by microdilution assay. The main purpose of this project is to provide greater stability, reducing their volatility and preserving the biological properties of Schinus molle L essential oil molecules, for their best application in the pharmaceutical industry, creating a stable controlled release system.
