SUMMARY:

Food issues have been consolidated and recognized as a source of tensions, contestations and debates between individuals, families, groups, social movements, industrial states, corporate conglomerates, technology companies and also between researchers and academics, to name just a few of the social actors involved in these disputes. Under the notion of food activism, this research project discusses what has been called a new arena of contemporary contestation, which brings together, with different formats and intensity, the production, distribution and consumption of food. The objective of the research proposed here is to identify, analyze and compare the processes by which food, food and eating have been consolidated as a political and contestation arena, constituting different expressions of food activism according to different justifications. In order to do so, the ways, potentials and limits with which the MST and Slow Food have understood and politically activated the issue of food in their countries and regions of origin are taken as case studies. The central question that guides this research project is: What are and how are the trajectories of the main contestations around food issues in Brazil and Italy? Thinking about the representativeness of these cases in the dynamics expressed as Global South and North, we ask: What are the ways, potentialities and limits with which these movements have understood and politically activated the theme of food? What brings them together and particularizes them? How do they express and reflect their national, regional, historical and geopolitical marks? Through the lens of the Theory of Justification, proposed by Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot in the early 1990s, we adopted the questions and criticisms around food mobilized by the MST and Slow Food as a gateway to sociological analysis. In the light of this theoretical-methodological framework, such contestations will be interpreted as the moments in which these collectives seek to situate themselves, bring arguments and evidence to justify their position and expose positions that would not always be explicit in stabilized or pacified situations. In this way, we present here some preliminary reflections on the operations of generalization carried out by these groups, seeking to explain the justifications emerging in dispute situations, according to the cités described by the Theory of Justification, namely inspired, industrial, mercantile, opinion , civic and domestic.
