LAND GRABBING AND THE FINANCIALIZATION OF THE BRAZILIAN FORESTRY SECTOR
Agribusiness, Brazilian forestry sector, Financialization of the countryside, Productive restructuring, Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMO)
Inserted in the context of the expansion of Brazilian agribusiness and agroindustry, the present work seeks to investigate the possibilities of dialogue between the increased interest of investment funds in land and in the production of commodities and the productive restructuring of the Brazilian forestry sector. To do so, we observe the merger, which took place in 2019, between the company Suzano Papel e Celulose and Fibria, originating Suzano S/A, which has consolidated itself as one of the largest cellulose producers in the world. In addition, we discussed the participation of companies known as Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMO), whose function is to find, analyze, acquire and manage forestry assets that best serve their clients, namely, pension funds, endowment funds, public pension system and individuals with high purchasing power. In this sense, the importance of this research is given by bringing the debate on the appropriation of the nature by financial capital and by large companies for the timber monoculture production sector. Here we emphasize the fact that it is a production of flex crops, which gives mobility to the capital invested in the land, given that the production of goods from this type of culture is capable of reaching alternative markets, in contrast to the low liquidity of investments in lands. In this way, we seek to understand the new dynamics of capitalism in the rural sector, in the face of an increasingly financialized economy. For this, we mobilized the theoretical framework on the land appropriation process, the financialization of the countryside and on the formation of the Brazilian forestry sector, as well as the collection of secondary statistical data.
