SUMMARY:

In this dissertation, I analyze the Zapatista contributions on "knowledge," "identity," and "reality" and I establish a dialogue between their understanding and that of modern critical scientists, in order to focus on the shared viewpoint between these two knowledge-producing groups: the urgency of capitalist refutation and the radical re-foundation of the paradigms of society. The overall aim of the investigation is to unveil the incidence of multiplicity in the Zapatista relational mode at various levels of life: in the individual scope, with the environment, with each other, with external agents, and with knowledge. To this end, the first chapter historically contextualizes the Zapatista struggle and its organizational configuration. In the second chapter, I elaborate on the relationship of Zapatism with modern science and its science in order to achieve the ideal functioning of knowledge production according to the group. The third chapter analyzes the incidence of multiplicity in Zapatista life through elements of the movement's ontology and epistemology. In this vein, I understand the cohesion between the "myth" founded in the Zapatista epistemological scope and the group's concrete actions toward world transformation. Thereby, the fourth chapter focuses on the explanatory power of the Relatos do Velho Antonio and the extrapolative power of the contos do gato-perro, as they illustrate and substantiate the discussion unveiled throughout chapters 1, 2, and 3. As research sources, I analyzed Zapatista books and documents of the Enlace Zapatista, which are official and public publications written by some subcommanders of the movement, books by scholars who have studied the Zapatista movement, and theories by modern authors that are contiguous to the Zapatista ideas studied here. For this analysis, I adopted three research techniques: documentary analysis of Zapatista sources, literature review of scholars who have studied the movement, and analysis of Zapatista knowledge in light of modern science concepts.
