SUMMARY:

Although studies have grown considerably in the last decade, there are still few in-depth discussions about the profile of people who practice urban agriculture. Motivated by this concern, this research aims to build an intersectional theoretical-methodological approach, focusing on black women urban farmers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR). To this end, oral history interviews, questionnaires and the production of a Sociobiodiversity Map were carried out, in addition to visits to female productive spaces (collective/community gardens and productive backyards), with the aim of understanding the profile of urban women farmers, bringing them actively into the construction of knowledge about their practices and territories.This journey allowed us to unravel a web of relationships, actions and protagonisms promoted by black women, with the potential to face the inequalities of race, gender and class that historically deny them the right to land, the city, healthy food and to be subjects. On the other hand, the practices carried out in productive spaces proved to be part of a system of transmission of knowledge that belongs to women and that are at the basis of the reproduction of urban agriculture in the territory of the RMR, as well as comprising, to a certain extent, the continuity of ways of life linked to African and Afro-Brazilian principles In this sense, as the field of studies on urban agriculture is still recent and in dispute, the repositioning of black women at the center of this debate provoked new reflections and opened up other fields of interest, such as the category of urban farmer, which presented itself as a necessary tool to deal with this subject (especially collective and political) who has been responsible for giving new meaning to urban spaces, but has remained invisible in literature and in discussions that go beyond the borders of territories.
