SUMMARY:

This thesis brings possible identitary correlations between the gorotuba bean and the gorutuba quilombola group from Bem Viver de Vila Nova dos Poções located in Janaúba north of Minas Gerais state. The comprehension of ethinic identity as a category under continuous construction, as an outcome of estabilished relations among social groups (Barth, Poutignat e Streiff-Fenard, 1998), contributes with the thesis that identitary recognition of the gorotubanos goes futher than their localization on the Gorutuba river, considering the establishment of settlement in Minas Gerais and Bahia and the contribution of the group for a long time. The non-isolation, the circulation of people and food, the conflicts, the social relationships, among others aspects from the gorutubanos quilombolas on the region were decisive for the recognition of the ethinic identity, and therefore, bond between the identity with the gorotuba bean by others groups. Otherwise, as endogenous category, the ethinic identity is not that direct related as the exogenous one.  Allthough the gorutuba bean is understood as a fundamental food it had not been listed as an identity element of the quilombolas by the people of Bem Viver. Despite of that, the centrality of feeding in the social organization of the quilombolas gorotubanos, experienced on the historical context and revealed as livelihood (Candido, 1979), suggest possible identity relations between the bean and the people, mainly by the analytical process presented on this thesis.
