The trajectory of women agroecological family farmers of the Zona da Mata region: Identity, Conflicts and Agencies
Agroecology, feminisms, gender coloniality, female leadership, social actors
The aim is to analyze the trajectory of women leaders involved in the agroecological movement in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais. The focus will be on women who work in social and political organizations related to family farming, linked to projects carried out by the Centro de Tecnologia Alternativa da Zona da Mata – CTA - ZM. The CTA was chosen due to its importance in promoting agroecology and its contribution to the empowerment of rural women in the region where the research will be developed. Among the possible approaches, I wonder if the lens of the debate on feminist agroecology and gender coloniality can contribute to the construction of women as political subjects and how these women were and are important for the construction of agroecology within the political, social and economic contexts. In addition, how does female leadership reflect and resonate, for themselves and for other women? Would feminist agroecology be capable of breaking with gender coloniality? What would this rupture look like? The suggested methodologies are: semi-structured interviews with women in leadership roles; transversal walk; and application of the Timeline methodology to identify the life trajectories of 13 leaders identified and chosen as references. In addition, a documentary analysis of field trip reports from the “Women and Agroecology” program carried out by CTA – ZM; and the construction of a report of the participant observation of the II Cultural and Agrogeological Caravan of Zona da Mata, where women in leadership positions were identified. Theoretical discussions between agroecology, feminist movements and gender approaches will be brought to this work with the intention of identifying the implications, conflicts and agency of these women in agroecological construction.
