RESUMO:

Instigated by the growing presence of large corporations in the dynamics of food production, processing, distribution and consumption I present as the objective of this work entitled “Food, Corporations and Territories: Supermarket Networks and Food Trade in the state of Rio de Janeiro” to analyze how the food regime is organized in the state of Rio de Janeiro and what is the role being played by the Supermarket Networks in the commerce of food produced in the state. Rio de Janeiro has the highest rate of urbanization of all among other of the Brazilian states, combined with an intense process of decreasing of rural areas and agricultural production at least since the 1990s, when processes of concentration, merger and internationalization of food retail players took placeGiven the history of fragile public institutionality with regard to public policies for agriculture and supply, I postulate that the state of Rio de Janeiro is a paradigmatic case of private food regulation in which the supermarket networks, in particular Corporate ones, play a key role in shaping the flow of food produced in the state and in organizing the productive activity.

The knowledge produced and systematized here is a particular case of a broader theoretical panorama that discusses and analyses the food politics, the hegemonic movement of food corporations, private food regulation and strategies to construct food sovereignty. In this sense, to the extent that this literature points out the agrarian question as a crucial point in the maintenance of the Corporate Food Regime and the strengthening of food regime as a counterpoint to the current model, I’ve also defined as an objective of this thesis to understand the action of these corporate agents, from a territorial and material points of view manner, and their relationship with state level agricultural producers, notably in the segment of fresh fruits and vegetables. We chose as the starting point for this research three different typologies of supermarket companies: Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição, Carrefour Group and the state level networks MultiMarket, SuperMarket and Unno.
